Having just obtained two bottles for my cellar, I was delighted to taste this wine a few weeks ago at the @woodlandswines cellar door. After almost 9 years in the bottle this wine is drinking superbly, with the oak beginning to shine through and the tannins integrating nicely. Drought, flood, hail and frost: one season can see it all but a single event can be enough to ruin the prospects of a successful vintage. In the face of climate change and uncertainty, many growers have decided to pursue sustainability efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and environmental impact. 🌱 @TractorlessVineyard, @vinteloper and @IslanderEstate have invested heavily to regenerate native bushland and wildlife corridors in and around their vineyards. 🐝 With thousands of new plants in the ground, these areas promise to thrive, encouraging native wildlife, insects and reptiles to new habitats. 🦎 The journey to decarbonise by wineries is another step taken to own their part in producing a sustainable product. Taylors Wines and Tahbilk, with their extensive efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, can’t go unmentioned. And manufacturers like DIAM are also actively taking steps to reduce energy consumption through the production process, while leaning heavily into renewable and natural resources to produce bottle closures.🍾 Constellation Brands say that “48 percent of consumers will deliberately switch to a brand that is more sustainable” and their Round Theory Wines are a solid case study of efforts to make and sell a more environmentally sound product. They come in distinct bottles that are 30% lighter, 35% shorter and made from clear glass to be more readily recyclable. ♻️ The packaging is made from recyclable aluminium and plastics and the label from recycled paper. The wine is made using sustainably farmed grapes from accredited vineyards, and Round Theory (via a partnership) offsets double its carbon emissions produced in carbon credits.🍷 Climate change is impacting and shaping today’s wine industry. The efforts of players from vineyard to table will be pivotal to bring sustainability to the industry, while reducing the environmental toll of farming, production and supply chain management. From growers embracing organic farming, cover crops and compost to winemakers and manufacturers using renewable energy, sustainable products and leaner processes, it’s encouraging to read what big and small players are doing to thrive in the years ahead.👏🏻
That’s a wrap! This year's harvest has officially come to a close with the pressing of our later ripening shiraz and dolcetto ferments. The wine is now being put into barrel where it will be tucked away for the winter months. Over this time, it will continue to develop and soften in readiness for bottling during the summer months. Our winemakers, Rollo and Matt, are thrilled with the exceptional quality this year, courtesy of the beautifully mild and dry summer we enjoyed. Frost is threatening the Wachau region and the heaters are one of the solutions we see happening to del with this hazard. The pictures are from the Gritsch winery, protecting their Riesling and Grüner Veltliner buds from the freezing cold. In In this case, they used straw, a material that burns very slowly and avoid big flames. This time, we’re talking all things OAK... 💬 After seeing a recent 5 star rating for our gorgeous te Pā Sauvignon Blanc Oke on @vivino, we wanted to share some inside info on why we ferment & age this special Sauv in French oak barrels, and explain the impact on the wine 🥂 Aging white wine in oak barrels can have several impacts on its flavour, aroma, and texture. We actually use a unique style of barrel for our Oke aging, which is a 320 litre ‘Cigar barrel’ which is longer and narrower than the typical 225 litre barrel most often used when aging white (and red) wines. Here are some of the key effects: ⭐️ Aroma: Oak aging can contribute to the wine’s aroma, adding notes of oak, spice, and sometimes a hint of coconut or dill, depending on the type of oak used. ⭐️ Flavour: Oak barrels can impart flavours such as vanilla, baking spices, caramel, and sometimes a subtle smokiness to the wine. These flavours add complexity and depth to the wine, which we absolutely love. ⭐️ Texture: This is a big one! Oak aging can also affect the texture of the wine, making it feel smoother & rounder on the palate. This is due to the interaction between the wine, the oak, and the lees (which are the expired yeast cells - more on that another time!) which soften the wine’s acidity & tannins. Overall, oak aging really enhances the complexity & character of white wine, adding delicious layers of flavour & aroma that can make the wine more interesting & enjoyable.
