Today is the 50/50 good/sad anniversary date. Good part: four years ago, October 1, 2019, three @inkmaster winners @ryanashleymalarkey @djtambe and @cleenrockoneinsta joined forces to become judges and host a spin-off Ink Master: Grudge Match. A pair of artists from 12 seasons had a score to settle and squash beef that occurred when they competed in their respected season. So the three levelled the playing field with a 90-minute tattoo where they determine what they’ll design and whoever wins would call the style or subject for six-hour grudge match and whoever won grudge match ends the grudge. As tense and dramatic as their grudges were, it allowed the artists a chance to show what they can do when they didn’t have that opportunity in their respected season. Some grudges ended while some kinda went on but awesome tattoos were done, and be ready to see Ryan and DJ return as judges in November. The sad part: six years ago, October 1st, 2017 on a warm fall evening on the Las Vegas strip, things took a horrifying turn as a gunman opened fire from a hotel room at the mandalay bay and killed 58 innocent people and wounding many others before police gunned down the suspect. This horrifying event left 58 friends and families traumatized with sadness but the city and everybody around the world came together for the people of Las Vegas for healing and support knowing that we were and always will be with them. Take a moment of silence today to remember the lives lost and forever changed on that tragic night. 5 years ago today. On October 1, 2017, a 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada, opened fire on the crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. From his 32nd-floor suites in the Mandalay Bay hotel, he fired more than 1,000 bullets, killing 60 people[a] and wounding at least 413. The ensuing panic brought the total number of injured to approximately 867. About an hour later, he was found dead in his room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Celebrating the life and legacy of Jennifer Irvine today: Five years ago this weekend Jennifer lost her life in the Las Vegas mass shooting. One of over 50 victims, at the time she was dancing amongst friends when she was struck down by a hail of bullets. Many people may know her for this tragedy, but I knew her as my advocate and close friend that stood by me unabated when I was fighting terminal cancer. She was such a genuine soul and a wonderful friend. She taught me first hand how to care for the sick and dying. She would come to the hospital almost every day to keep me company and was a critical member of the team of people that helped me beat my disease and go on to become an Hawaii Ironman triathlete that same year. Her legacy lives on in my advocacy work and my dogged determination to make an impact in the world. I can only hope that I make a fraction the impact in peoples lives that she made in mine. Heaven gained an Angel that day, and I’d like to think that I gained a guardian Angel in mine. You cannot put a price on loyalty. And she was one of the most loyal people I’ve ever known. Highland Park, Illinois--- Police confirm that six people were killed during a #massshooting at a 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois. Highland Park is a Chicago suburb about 60 miles south of Milwaukee. Approximately 2 dozen people were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. #HighlandPark Police are still calling this an "active incident" as law enforcement agencies are searching for the suspect. The suspect is described as a white male, between 18-20 years old with long dark hair. A rifle was recovered from the scene. There is currently a shelter in place order for Highland Park as a perimeter has been secured around downtown. Police are asking anyone with cell phone or surveillance video to contact them. The parade was stopped around 10:14 a.m. when shots were fired, striking an unknown number of people and sending hundreds running for safety. Law enforcement has confirmed the shooter was firing from on top of a high building, while attempting to conceal himself. My #flashbackfriday is the 50/50 good day/bad day anniversary post. The good day is two years ago, the third @inkmaster spin-off, Ink Master: Grudge Match, premiered where three Ink Master champions, @ryanashleymalarkey @djtambe and @cleenrockoneinsta, came together to judge as artists from 12 seasons came back to settle a score in a feud from their respected season. They even the playing field with a 90-minute face-off where they choose what they’ll do, and the winner chooses style or subject for six-hour tattoo, and the winner of six-hour Grudge Match ends the grudge and this was the artists’ chance to show what they could do when they might not have done so when they competed. I hope that @paramountplus will allow them to continue this series once filming starts again bcuz I’m pretty sure there are other artists who wanna settle the score. The bad day part: four years ago, 10/01/17, on a clear evening in Las Vegas, a gunman opened fire from the Mandalay Bay windows and killed 58 innocent bystanders before police gunned down the suspect. It was a horrible night and the city came together united as one and stood together in healing and worldwide as well. Nearly four years ago I witnessed a massacre from the roof of Mandalay Bay. In the moment, when it was happening I had no idea the shooter was directly below me. I still remember that surreal feeling afterwards. I especially remember the moments of sudden PTSD when tears would flow without warning. Four days after that tragic shooting my stomach started turning and I had a difficult time breathing. I knew I needed a ceremony to help me process what I was experiencing. I conducted a ceremony on #blackmountain facing the strip from the East to West. It was an amazing experience that enabled me to push out tears I didn’t know I had. I could feel the sorrow of all those families and I could not stop weeping. I cried and prayed aloud for nearly two hours straight and when it was over I sat down and silent tears followed. I felt like I was being nurtured and held by the earth and the spirits around me. It was truly beautiful. Like my past ceremonies, profound moments of clarity followed. When I arrived at the Luxor last night I had no idea that I would be directly across the street from where all those people died. I held onto some tobacco (indigenous spirit medicine) and took a walk to the site where I stood and remembered. For me it’s important to remember my traumas- to process them and turn my pain into understanding. I had a moment about a profound memory and now that moment is with the tobacco I placed at the site. Life will continue forward regardless of my beliefs and memories. Meet Lacey Newman! We are so proud to have Lacey as one of our Stop The Bleed Ambassadors. Lacey is a survivor of the Las Vegas Massacre in 2017. When she was shot in both of her legs, her friend’s quick thinking and knowledge to apply pressure to her wounds in order to stop the bleeding saved Lacey’s life. Douglas Haig was sentenced Tuesday in Las Vegas to 13 months in prison for selling illegally manufactured ammunition to the Route 91 Harvest festival gunman. Haig pleaded guilty in November to a federal charge of manufacturing ammunition without a license in what was the only criminal case to stem from the Las Vegas massacre. Repost from @haki_kweli_shakur Domestic Terrorism Wilmington Massacre A politically motivated attack by whites against the city’s leading African American citizens, the Wilmington Race Riot of 1898 On November 10th, Alfred Moore Waddell, a former Confederate officer and a white supremacist, led a group of 500-1,500 White townsmen to force the ouster of Wilmington’s city officials. By this time, the crowd had swelled to nearly 2,000 men. Whites rioted and shot guns, attacking blacks throughout Wilmington but especially in Brooklyn, the majority-black neighborhood. The small patrols were spread out over the city and continued until nightfall. Walker Taylor, of the Secret Nine, was authorized by Governor Russell to command the Wilmington Light Infantry (WLI) troops, newly returned from the Spanish-American War, and the federal Naval Reserves, taking them into Brooklyn to quell the "riot". They intimidated both black and white crowds with rapid-fire weapons, but the WLI killed several black men. Whites drove the opposing political and business leaders from the town. 2,100 blacks left Wilmington permanently abandoning their businesses and properties, the town became white majority. An eyewitness later wrote that African Americans fled to the swamps, or hid in the African American cemetery at the edge of town. When their criminal behavior resulted in neither Federal sanctions nor condemnation from the state, Waddell and his men formalized their control of Wilmington. The posse forced the Republican members of the city council and the mayor to resign and Waddell assumed the mayoral seat. Effective midnight tonight, my city is shutting down. 😢 Some casino chains were doing it voluntarily but some were taking a stand. Now the governor has mandated that they shut down all non-essential businesses which includes all hotels, casinos, restaurants, etc. ALL CASINOS WILL CLOSE TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT FOR NO LESS THAN 30 DAYS! Only hospitals, pharmacies, banks, grocery stores and gas stations are to remain open. It’s the right decision. You can’t control a city like this without a sweeping order like this making everything unavailable to tourists and locals. We’re not really known for our discipline or control. I’m not sure how they’re sending guests home if their flights aren’t until later. Not sure what they plan to do with flights already en route to #Vegas! What a shocker those passengers are in for.
