❝Your last stop on this walk is something of an enigma, and hard to spot unless you know what you are looking for. Cross over towards the black-tiled building at no. 4 #GreatNewportStreet. Look closely at the facade, and you will see a hook labelled ‘ #MetropolitanPolice’. As so often with London stories, it is very hard to wheedle out the truth of oddities such as this, but you may read that this was a hook used by policemen in the early 20th century for hanging up their coats in hot weather while directing traffic. Whatever the reason, this is a delightful curiosity to admire as you walk by. LEICESTER SQUARE 🔵⚫️ Leicester Square Station was opened on 15TH Of December 1906 and is located in the West End of London in Theatre land and Chinatown. The Station is served by the Piccadilly and Northern Lines. On the Piccadilly Line Leicester Square is located between Covent Garden and Piccadilly Circus and on the Northern the station is on the Charing Cross Branch and is located between Charing Cross and Tottenham Court Road. The original Railway Companies to open the station was The Great Northern, Piccadilly And Brompton Railway (Now the Piccadilly Line) on 15th of December 1906 and Charing Cross, Euston And Hampstead Railway (Now the Northern Line) on 22nd of June 1907. The original plans for the Station was to be called Cranbourn Street but the Great Northern, Piccadilly And Brompton Railway used its current name when they opened the Station in 1906. Leicester Square had lifts that led to the platforms when it was first constructed. When the Northern Line got extended to Edgware in the North and Morden in the South in the 1920’s and the extension of the Piccadilly Line to South Harrow and Hounslow West in the 1930’s the below ground part of Leicester Square was reconstructed in the 1930’s in which there was new Station entrances, a new sub surface ticket hall and escalators down to the platforms. This then made the lifts redundant in which they were taken out and the lift shafts are now ventilation shafts. The station then opened in 1935. The escalators that led down to the Piccadilly Line were the Longest in the world and on the network at the time Leicester Square opened in 1935 being 54m (177ft) long. This however lasted 57 years until the reopening of Angel Station in 1992 which had 60m (197ft) long escalators. Architecture On Leicester Square’s 4 platforms you can see down the entire length of each platform film Sprockets which are black on the Northern Line and Blue on the Piccadilly Line as shown in the pictures. Ideally located for people who wish to explore central London and the surrounding area, Leicester Square is the main tube station to exit if you wish to visit attractions such as Chinatown, Theatreland and Trafalgar Square amongst many others.
