Flowers 🌹 Everyone likes them to be beautiful. Yeah, so do we! But do you know what's behind the beauty of a flower? What it has been suffering from besides looking beautiful? They grow up enduring the weather, the rain, the storm, and so many things. They seek the sun and water their entire lives for sustenance. Sometimes, someone comes and plucks them up even when they haven't grown properly. They smell their beautiful scent and then sit in a chair, slowly grabbing tiny petals from the flower, pulling them off, saying "it will be done," and then grabbing another petal and pulling it again, saying "it will not be done." Little do they know that they are making life choices by destroying something's entire life. The struggle behind its entire life ends up on the ground in pieces of petals, turning brown. Did these flowers deserve that? Did they ever do wrong to you? What if they look beautiful and smell heavenly? Will you destroy them for being beautiful and charming to you? How cruel is the world, being rude to nature by plucking it and cutting it off just for the sake of their own desires? And their fault is just being beautiful and charming to human senses of eyes and nose. How dumb am I here, talking about destroying the life of a flower, when even these humans are not leaving other humans in peace and are destroying their lives for their own desires? Someone using someone for the sake of themselves and leaving them out like trash when they're tired. Someone killing someone for money and property. Some land bombing others for the sake of acquisition. Then what about the life of a tiny piece of nature? No one even cares. Not even for humans or animals. Please do not pluck the flowers or harm nature, and please don't kill tiny insects, as they deserve to live their lives just like you do! My first year of growing tulips is has been…a learning curve. I mean, have you ever seen such pathetically short stems? LOL I’ve done the homework and know I can use shade cloth and water more. But before I go and do all that I wanted to document my failure, because I believe failure is one of life’s greatest teachers. So often I think we approach things thinking they will go a certain way. “Dig hole, insert bulb, water, cover with dirt.” And bada bing, bada boom - award winning tulips will shoot up in the spring making your yard look like the Netherlands. The truth is: growth is rarely that easy. Maybe it’s because in order for something to grow it has to be alive, and the very essence of life requires adaptation and attention. I have a dozen light pink tulips that are thriving, but they had basically been mowed down by rabbits once they shot out of the ground. Another set has been beat up by the cold. This set is short and stumpy. They all need different levels of care. And next spring might require a whole other list of needs. Growth is complicated, but usually possible if you pay attention to what is needed and respond accordingly. Miniature Dawn Creek Zinnias. Brought to you by… my lack of time. These little ladies have been cooped up in their seed trays since March. But bless them, they bloomed despite my neglect. They needed room to grow and I simply did not have the time to give them that room. I’m sure there is a life lesson here somewhere… perhaps concerning my own daughters. My daughters and time are the very reason though I have not posted in this little space in awhile, trying to give them a bit of the time I do have. I guess I am not so sad about these mini zinnias if that means I have neglected them to be with my girls. Today is the first day in more than a week that I’ve managed to get into the garden… or even pick up my camera. I’ve made many promises to myself over the years to allow myself 10-15 minutes in my garden or with my flowers each day. Somehow “life” still gets in the way. I was watching @gardeningaustralia last night and got the gentle reminder that gardening is good for #mentalhealth so I made sure that I had my time there today. It’s much harder to do on weekdays, so I need find ways to stick to my 10-15 mins every day. It makes a difference to my mood, my feelings, and my day… I just have to prioritise myself, something I really struggle with. Like the old @lorealparis ad says “you’re worth it” - time to drum that into my head! Time to let my garden nurture me. 🪴

These flowers really are the gift that keeps on giving. Rob Williams gave me these at the start of our lockdown - nearly 5 weeks ago. This is - if you've been following for a while - our 'love your curves' King Protea! This bunch of flowers have graced our dinner table since then, and outlasted many other flowers. Yet now, even though they are not really 'thriving' any more, they are still showing their beauty in a whole new way. As dried flowers go, these are doing pretty well - and they definitely still bring a smile and give me great enjoyment. In Bloom. I’ve been waiting in anticipation for days to see my Amaryllis in full bloom and it never disappoints! The flowers are so beautiful. This plant has taught me so much about patience. It only blooms once every other year or so. When I first got it, I thought it had died because it showed no sign of life for over a year. Then one day, it grew a leaf and eventually a stem and then it bloomed. This year, I have three flowers...the third is taking a bit longer to open than the other two. Today has been a tough day for me, but when I look at my Amaryllis, I see how beautiful it is and it makes me happy. Sometimes it can take a while for life to come into full bloom and to show off it’s beauty. We have had an insurmountable amount of rain the last few weeks in NC. The flowers are loving it and all of my lilies are starting to bloom. I don’t know about you but watching flowers bloom brings so much joy to my soul. Gardening is a big part of my #selfcare routine and cultivating and appreciating the beauty of nature always brings me closer to my faith. In one of the deepest and darkest times of my life, after #miscarriage being outdoors and working in our memorial flower and herb garden was one place where I didn’t feel pain or feel sad. It’s where I felt God’s presence the most and that gave me the strength to go on most days when the grief was too heavy a burden to bear. Now that this garden is in its 4th season, I walk out through it at least twice a day and admire all of the beautiful flowers. I’m reminded of God’s goodness. It’s a visual reminder that he will not let you suffer in tragedy without bringing you through it and bringing you to something beautiful. Every blooming flower is a joyful gift from above and a symbol of strength, perseverance, and hope. . . . ➡️ What does self-care look like for you? I only ended up with about a dozen zinnias (thanks to some rabbits who now have full bellies 🐰) , but the ones that made it are really spectacular. I tried a tip from the ol’ interweb ( @floretflower )where you pinch them back after the first buds form. They will supposedly have more blooms with longer, straighter stems for cutting. It seems to be working...we shall see... I think there is something to getting rid of the good to make room for the great. #doupgardens #zinnias #lifelessonsfromflowers
Honestly? Of all the flowers we bought that May weekend, these marigolds were my least favorite. They were a bit beat up. They were kinda just hanging on. They weren't that pretty. I was okay with getting them because they seemed like a neutral flower that would compliment the rest of the prettier flowers. • • Now? They are vibrant, healthy, and many! They are slowly spilling out of the flower pot. And I love these marigolds. I love how hard they fought to live. And I love that they burst with life over and over again! My opinion of them didn't alter the outcome of their beauty. • • You and me? We are marigolds too. Our opinion of this season doesn't change the outcome of God's beautiful purpose and plan. Our wilted hearts become vibrant beneath the shadow of His wings. Our soul can spill out in celebration, and our life is rich in His love and promise now. • • God does wonderful things with marigolds. I've had weeks to see it. 🌿🌼🌿
