Ever feel like you just can’t get to all the subjects you want or need to teach? I have good news for you. You don’t have to teach all the subjects everyday! This tip from Annie @sweetannie is a strategic way to immerse in certain subjects that just feel like they require more time, while not neglecting other subjects.

⠀⠀ The llama photo-bombed my kid’s silly selfie. Look at that llama! He is sporting his good side and flashing all of his pearly whites! This picture just about sums up our homeschooling adventure and the many, many fieldtrips we have taken over the years. Sometimes things didn’t go quite as planned but the little surprises God gave us along the way made the journey quite an adventure! This picture also sums up one of the most important mom lessons I have learned over the years: I need to stop pushing myself, my husband, my kids, and our homeschooling to be perfect but instead, stop and appreciate the all of imperfections. While trying to take the perfect picture or teach a perfect lesson or keep the house in perfect order, I might have missed some of the most precious, valuable, or hilarious homeschooling, traveling, or mothering moments Embrace the imperfections. Embrace the silly moments. When someone asks you about homeschooling (as we know they inevitably will - and you know I often grow weary of people telling me why they could NEVER homeschool their own children), are you prepared to offer an articulate answer as to why you homeschool? Are you prepared to talk about the pros and cons of homeschooling? It is so important that we, as homeschooling parents, can articulate our viewpoints and the importance of what we do! We want more families to homeschool… are we prepared to be homeschool ambassadors? Such a good reminder from Leah @lovingleadinglittles! It’s so much easier to present the things that interest us, but our kids are different people than we are! It’s important to present things that might not be our preference, just in case it becomes theirs. One of the many beautiful aspects of homeschooling is learning right alongside them! 🤍

still on our bug unit, and having the best time in #theschoolinghaus. my guys have been really interested in mosquitoes lately. We’ve learned that only females bite and the reason they do this is because they need a protein from our blood to help with laying eggs. we’ve also learned that basil and lavender are natural mosquito deterrents, so this mama ordered a bunch of seeds to plant around the yard next month 😅 next up, is butterflies and lady bugs. 🐞🦋

So, it’s been a minute (or 4 years😂). I’ve decided to pick my personal account back up and look forward to interacting with you beautiful people. Cakes have been my life for the last while and while still a huge part of my life, there’s a good bit more to me now! A little bit about what I’ve been up to: Homeschooling consumes my days. Phoebe is almost 10 and is wrapping up 4th grade. Graham just turned 8 and is finishing up 2nd grade, and Hazel is about to turn 6 and is almost done with Kindergarten! Time is ridiculous! To be honest I don’t love homeschool, but it’s where I am at right now. 😂 My business turned 5 back in February and that also blows my mind! I’ve been in the gym for years but have recently (as in like two days ago) taken up running. It sucks so bad, but I’m trying to push myself. Life is busy but life is good. Say Hi if we haven’t talked in a minute! 😘

Truer #homeschool words were never spoken. I was helping this lovely lady with putting together a music co op class for homeschoolers. We worked together to narrow down the VAST amount of choices at @squiltmusic to put together a simple plan. Her final email to me just hit me between the eyes. 👀 I am a firm believer that less is more. A few things learned well may spark a later interest and stick with our children - rather than throwing all the things at them and seeing what sticks. 😂 I know the temptation, though… so many beautiful resources to try, right? #homeschool #homeschoolers #lifeofahomeschooler #homeschoollife #homeschooling #homeschoolperks #homeschoolmom #lifeofahomeschoolmom #homeeducate #homeeducation #homeeducated #homeschoolersofinstagram

A Loop Schedule saved my sanity! Do you have a “When we have time, we will get to that” pile?  Yeah, I think we all do!  I hardly ever got to that pile.  I’m guessing this might be true for you too! Instead of doing specific subjects on specific days or all subjects every day, try using a loop schedule. This will help you get to all of the things you want to cover.   Make a list of what you want to include in your loop.  I simplified it even more by having a “Loop” (or Rotating) basket.  I put the items in the basket I wanted to do and in the order I wanted to do them.   Each morning, I pulled out the first 2-3 items in my loop basket and did them during our morning time after our core activities.  At the end of our day, I placed those 2-3 items back into my loop basket but behind all of the other items.  Now in the front of my loop basket we’re 2-3 new items to cover the next day. You can put whatever you want into your Loop Basket.  I put the items from my “ When we have time” pile into my loop basket. Here is what we put in our Loop Basket: *map work *patriotic studies * memory work *poetry *Shakespeare *nature journal *science experiment book *Mad Libs *art study *composer study *hymn study *latin *history game Do you use a Loop Basket (or rotating schedule)?  If not, let’s get loopy together! Hello, homeschooling mom 💖 I see the incredible role you play. You are the heartbeat of your home, lovingly nurturing your family, dedicating yourself to the education of your little ones, and keeping a bustling household in harmony. You envision days filled with endless play with your children, having the strength to easily push the stroller, carry the shopping, and even lift those big bags of feed, all effortlessly. For you, it’s not about the scale; it’s about embracing each moment with energy, being able to sit and cuddle your baby without feeling worn out. I understand, amidst the lessons, prayers, and never-ending tasks, putting yourself first often falls to the wayside. “Tomorrow,” you tell yourself, hoping for a perfect moment to focus on your health in the future. Yet, you recognize that waiting for the perfect time is an illusion, and those tomorrows often fade away. Let me share a loving reminder: The happiness of your family is built on the foundation of your well-being. Prioritizing your health isn’t selfish; it’s vital. And you’re not meant to navigate this path alone. This March, I warmly invite you to join a community crafted just for you: *Pray, Move, and March into Wellness*. A virtual health and fitness space where faith intertwines with fitness, where we commit to health as a lifestyle. Offering workouts designed for your busy life, tasty yet healthy recipes, daily scripture and prayer challenges to feed your soul, and a supportive group of women who truly get it - we’ll journey together. Now is the time to step into health, strengthened by faith and nourished by grace. Let’s embrace the vigor, strength, and vitality required to fulfill our divine roles, for ourselves and our loved ones. Send me a message with “March” for more information. Your moment is here. Let’s embark on this together. 🌸🙏💪

Ever since graduating my oldest last year, and my second is now in 11th grade, I get asked a lot of highschool questions. One tip I've learned is to use the same style of learning that worked in the younger years as they enter highschool. Just because they are older doesn't mean they learn differently 😉 Another piece of advice is to include more skills in your teens' learning. My boys have especially loved learning and working on car maintenance or dirt bikes/atvs. My teen daughter has enjoyed learning all about baking and cooking. Also, don't put all your focus during these years into college prep or early college enrollment. Yes, some teens are on that path, and it will serve them well. But for many teens, that is not going to be enjoyable or be a good fit. Finally, use the younger years to build good habits! Having a teen responsible to choose what they enjoy and actually work it is not something that happens overnight. It takes years of practice working on good habits and work ethic to get there. If you're not there yet, keep being consistent, and you will be. I can't give you a run down of exactly what you should do for transcripts or classes in highschool for various reasons. However, these tips have helped me with two going on four teens, and I'm confident they can help you no matter what path your teens follow.

What’s Needed to homeschool high school? First, you need God! Make sure this is God’s plan for your teen. Then stay connected to God’s plan for your teen through His word and through prayer. Now what? 1. Find out your state’s requirements for graduation. Go to HSLDA to find your state. @hslda 2. Based on your state’s requirements and your teen’s aspirations and God-given gifts, make a flexible 4 year plan. 3. Find resources, curriculum, classes, activities, work opportunities, and internships to help your teen meet his goals and fulfill his 4- year plan. 4. Invite godly mentors to come alongside your teen. Include grandparents, coaches, youth pastors, etc to speak truth and wisdom into your teen. 5. Find a community to join and to celebrate the milestones and achievements with. 6. Get connected with other moms. Go to them for prayer and encouragement. Lean on the Lord and experienced homeschooling moms. 7). And of course, you will need lots and lots of coffee for those late-night talks, daily car rides, ( and chemistry 😂)! 8). Finally, you need my book, Homeschool High School : A Handbook for Christian Education. Order it on @amazon March 1st! LINK IN BIO Dare I say, the teenage years are the best! Don’t let the world tell you anything different. If you have a child who is a reluctant writer, this book is a great way to introduce how fun it can be! Gooney Bird Greene has a way of telling "absolutely true" stories that turn everyday happenings into something enchanting. Her class and teacher are always looking forward to what story she tells next. I was pleasantly surprised that this has so many writing tips and was not schoolely at all, I enjoyed it as much as my kids! This would be such a fun book for a creative writer to help see how words and circumstances can make an impact on an enjoyable story. @sonlightcurriculum guide while reading the book added another layer of discussion while we've been reading it! Ps. I wouldn't have known the official terms that Gooney Bird Greene used without it 🙈🙊😉 I highly recommend this for kids 6+. All mine are loving it, and even the teens would stop to listen when they were home.

Today did we…. Keep your days simple and your expectations realistic! At the end of each day, ask yourself these simple questions: Today, Did We.... Read something Write something Create something Solve something Explore nature Move Rest Worship & Care for our home and each other? If your day is full of opportunities like these and your home environment encourages these kinds of things, then your kids have all they need. Simplify your days by resting in the Lord, focusing on what’s really important, inspiring your kids to be creative, including beauty in their days, and engaging in thoughtful conversations.   **Coffee House Members- This printable graphic will be one of your March Monthly resources. ** #simplehomeschooling #simplehomeschool #homeschoolwithcarrie #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #christianhomeschooling #homeschoolencouragement #justbreathesipcoffee #homeisthenewschool #homeschoollife #homeeducation #lifeofahomeschoolmom

There were several times I just KNEW it would be easier to put the kids in school. I would be happier. They would be happier. They would LISTEN to someone else better. I am glad I didn't act on those feelings. I am thankful I had people speak into my life who assured me these struggles were temporary - and that they might be indicative of heart issues we needed to address. As with most things, the struggles fade with time. I love my "big kids" - they follow their passions, continue to learn independently, and have a sense of responsibility (and lack of entitlement!) that I attribute to lessons they learned at HOME. All will be well. I know it's hard to believe that when you're in the thick of it. But I do believe that if you are faithful, loving, diligent, and take your job as a homeschool parent very seriously - all WILL be well. What’s a GOOD Homeschool Day? When new homeschooling moms come to me frustrated or seasoned moms come to me weary, I encourage them with... “Honey, If all you did today was read together THE GOOD book and you read from A good book, then it was a good day.  And if you were able to pray together and play together, than it was an even better day!” Trust me, if you are having one of those days and you have to skip math, you will be able to catch up tomorrow or next week. God’s Word never comes back void, and the fervent prayer of a righteous (wo)man avails much.  Reading aloud from any good book can teach almost any or all of the academic subjects (and the snuggles go a long way too). Learning through play and games produces new synapses in the brain with only 10-20 repetitions!  Normally, it takes up to 400 repetitions to create those synapses.  Playing is the work of childhood.   So you see, any homeschool day with God’s Word and a good book can be a GOOD homeschool day. Praying and playing together make it an even better day! #itsagooddaytohaveagoodday #familyreadaloud #gameschooling #homeschoolwithcarrie #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #christianhomeschooling #homeschoolencouragement #simplehomeschooling #justbreathesipcoffee #homeisthenewschool #homeschoollife #homeeducation #lifeofahomeschoolmom #homegrownmatters

The February Wall is upon us!   Every year for almost twenty years of homeschooling, I hit what I called the “February Wall.” If you have been homeschooling for at least a year, you know what I’m talking about.  You may call it something else or maybe you haven’t labeled it yet, but you know that WALL. ⠀⠀ Around February, we are still struggling to get back into the swing of things after the holidays, and the dreary rainy weather in January doesn’t help our motivation either.  I panic as I look at our calendar and wonder how in the world are we going to get everything done by summer vacation. ⠀⠀ Every February, I hit a wall.   No matter what I try, some math concept eludes a child.  No matter what I do, negative attitudes preside in every area of our home.  The kids are whinny.  I’m crying.  People are sick.  Work isn’t getting down.  The laundry and dishes are piling up.  It is this wall I can’t seem to scale or break through.  I usually end up lying in a fetal position in a puddle of tears telling my husband I am ruining the kids and that come Monday, I’m putting them in school.  Then after we pray, he calms me down and reminds me it is February. Have hope! Remember, God doesn’t want perfection, He wants progress.   He doesn’t want a perfect teacher, He wants a faithful servant. ⠀⠀ For more encouragement, listen to tomorrow’s Coffee With Carrie Homeschool Podcast, “The MidYear Slump: How to Find the Door in the February Wall.” #februarywall #homeschoolwithcarrie #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #christianhomeschooling #homeschoolencouragement #simplehomeschooling #justbreathesipcoffee #homeisthenewschool #homeschoollife #homeeducation #lifeofahomeschoolmom

grazing boards are a literal win when it comes to lunchtime! 🙌🏻 the kids enjoy helping choose what goes on it and then proceed to graze on it all afternoon which means that I don’t have a lot dishes to wash before dinner — that’s a personal win for me 😅🤣 my boys love snacks in general so grazing board gives me an opportunity to offer a lot of healthy options — fruits, veggies, cheese and yogurt dips are on heavy rotation around here. I’ve also noticed that they don’t ask for snacks when there is a lunch board sitting on the table. and with three boys, some days I feel like all I’m doing is trying to deal out snacks 😅 anyway, if you’re crunched for time and need to feed a house full of kids, this is the way. 🤪 swipe to see a close up what’s on this cutie kid friendly grazing board.

Homeschooling Triage: What is it? It is the act of reassessing what’s really important after a bad day, bad week, or even a bad season. When I assessed our ABC’s of Homeschooling Triage, I reminded myself of what was really important to our family. On those hard days, I tried to salvage our time by reading God’s Word, getting out in nature, listening to a good book, playing a few games, and immersing ourselves in good music and beautiful things. These are the things that were important to us in our homeschooling so these were the things we went to on really bad days. When you have to get back to the basics in order to heal a bad day, what are your family’s “basics”? TEACHING HISTORY: No Stress, No textbook, No problem! ⠀⠀ You don’t need dry, boring textbooks to teach or learn about history. There are 4 easy ( and almost FREE) alternatives our family has used over the years. ⠀⠀ 1️⃣ Replace those textbooks with living books & a library card. We literally read our way through history almost every year. Pick chapter books & pictures books to read aloud to the family and then assign an additional reading list to your older readers. Include biographies, historical fictions, primary documents, poetry, non fiction books, & even some fun time travel books. It’s super easy and totally free! ⠀⠀ 2️⃣ Watch your way through history! When the kids were older, I selected movies, documentaries, mini-series, & even plays to watch during school time and as a family. Depending on the time period you are studying and the maturity level of your kids, you can literally watch a movie every day and still not see them all. There are so many good ones to use. Now with streaming services, this method can be very inexpensive too. ⠀⠀ 3️⃣ Act and sing your way through History! If your kids like to ham it up, put on your own plays. Join local musical theatre groups & learn about historical events and people through song and dance. Listen to songs and jingles on YouTube about different time periods. Get your family, friends, and co-op involved. ⠀⠀ 4️⃣ Experience history! Plan your family vacations around what you are learning each year. We made field trips a priority in our schedule.  ⠀⠀ No matter what you do, make sure your kiddos understand HIStory is God’s Story. God has a master plan and your kids are a very important part of it! What is your favorite way to teach history?   For more ideas, listen to Coffee With Carrie Homeschool Podcast Episodes # 185 “Read Your Way Through History: No Textbook Approach,” # 155 “Field Trips: The Secret Sauce to Homeschooling,” and #169 “Passport to Learning: Multi-subject Approach to Geography” #homeschoolhistory #homeschoolwithcarrie #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #christianhomeschooling #homeschoolencouragement #simplehomeschooling #homeschoollife #homeeducation #lifeofahomeschoolmom

“Education must not simply teach work - it must teach Life.” W. E. B. DuBois You’re doing it, mom! You’re teaching them to clean and organize, to read, to be kind and patient, to divide, to love nature, to work and cooperate with others, to express themselves in a godly way, to love and appreciate our nation, and most importantly, to know and love God. In these crazy times, you are teaching them to look up instead to look within. You are teaching them to rely on Jesus, King and Creator, not to rely on rulers and leaders of this world. “Words are life.” ~ The Book Thief When your homeschooling days get a bit crazy, do you find your sanctuary within the pages of a book? Reading is the best way to remove the chaos. There is peace inside the pages of a book. Books inspire. Books entertain. Books can be as soothing as a hot cup of coffee and a warm fuzzy blanket. Take some time today to read aloud as a family. Use your audible credits and listen to the wild adventures of Mole, Rat, and Mr. Toad, or the merry adventures of Robin Hood. When’s the last time you shared Mary’s secret garden with your family or Long John Silver’s treasure island with your kids? Have you met the Penderwick family yet or the false prince? Girl, there are so many places to go and so many people to introduce to your kids. The best part of homeschooling is the extra time available to read aloud as a family. Words are life and reading aloud is essential! ☕️ For more ideas on Family Read Aloud Time, listen to Coffee With Carrie Homeschool Podcast Season One, Episode # 4 “The 10 Essentials of Homeschooling: #4 Read Aloud time” and episodes on reading and writing for younger kiddos and English for high schoolers. I have seen way too many young moms thinking they need to be "teaching" their preschoolers. Things like sight words, math, reading. It makes my heart so sad, because those are the years we are to just ENJOY our children. I had a wise mentor mom tell me to just read books. Take field trips. Play. Bake. Let them play outside until they can't hold their eyes open. There is only one time in our lives when we develop this sense of wonder and awe - and relationship - It's in the preschool years! Please please trust me when I tell you there will be AMPLE time for formal learning, and your child will be more excited about formal learning if you let them develop their sense of wonder and inquiry in the preschool years. (Ask me how I know.) #homeschool #homeschooling #homeschoolpreschool #preschoolhomeschool #homeschooled #lifeofahomeschooler #lifeofahomeschoolmom #homeschoolersofinstagram #homeeducation #homeeducated #homeeducator #homeeducate

A MUST READ! What do you see? Do you see a pitiful, barren little rose bush?  It certainly looks like this rose bush has seen better days! It’s that time of the year when my husband prunes back all of our rose bushes.  While I know our garden looks bare, my husband insists pruning down to their bare branches is best for the roses.  By pruning them back in the winter, it allows them to grow back stronger in the spring, thus giving me an abundance of fragrant and beautiful roses in summertime. Over the years, I have come to view the January and February months as my “pruning” season in homeschooling too.  If I don’t take the time to prune away the things that aren’t working or to prune away the activities that are choking out the healthy branches, then we don’t have a plentiful harvest at the end of the school year.  During the  winter months, my kids (and I) tend to shrivel up from lack of “nourishment,” so I carefully, meticulously (and sometime begrudgingly), cut away until our “branches” can easily access the light.   In the past, the pruning process was always ugly and it left some pretty bare bushes behind, but in the long run, the kids had more time and energy to really focus on what was important.  I couldn’t see any blossoms during that time, but in hindsight I realize that those winter pruning months were usually the time of the year my kids grew the most! Some years, I have had to prune back to the bare basics!  I cut and cut until the chaos was gone.  If only focusing on 2-3 areas this winter is what you and your family needs to do to make sure your roots are going deep and your branches are growing strong, then do it!   You may not see it now, but come spring, you will notice some sweet little breakthroughs.  And by May and June, your home just might be overflowing with an array beautiful blossoms. Join us in The Coffee House this month. We are pruning, readjusting, and changing our mindsets. #pruningseason #homeschoolwithcarrie #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #christianhomeschooling #homeschoolencouragement #simplehomeschooling #justbreathesipcoffee #homeisthenewschool #homeschoollife #homeeducation #lifeofahomeschoolmom

Soul Food- Family Devotions My youngest was a squirrelly kid.  I could not get him to sit still for even a short little family devotional time.  Then one morning when he was busy munching on his breakfast, I realized I had his undivided attention!  That is when our breakfast time became our “Soul Food” time.  I figured while I was feeding their tummies, I would feed their hearts and minds too! Our family devotion time isn’t long and we usually didn’t use a fancy “Family Devotion Curriculum” either.  Some of our most meaningful and favorite family devotions happened when we simply read a Bible story from our Children’s Bible and discussed it. Some years, we did use a children’s devotion. Some of our favorites were: *God’s Amazing Creatures and Me by Haidle, *The Big Book of Animal Devotions by Coleman, *The One Year Sports Devotional Book, *A Year with Aslan:  Narnia Devotional by Roller, And *Window on the World by Spraggett. *Hero Tales by Jackson What do you do for family devotion time?   Do you have any favorite resources? Oh how I did NOT miss the waiting and wondering if the school system was going to cancel classes or not… homeschooling gave me the peace and freedom of knowing what our days held. It’s one of the biggest things I loved about homeschool - FREEDOM to conduct our days the way I saw fit. I know we learned and lived a lot more because of it. #homeschool #homeschoolers #lifeofahomeschooler #homeschoollife #homeschooling #homeschoolperks #homeschoolmom #lifeofahomeschoolmom #homeeducate #homeeducation #homeeducated #homeschoolersofinstagram

This was meant to be my birthday post yesterday. Turned 35. I don't know why but 35 just seems like it'll be a good number. . Turning 35 meant time to renew my driver's license. Since I had renewed online last time I had to go in. Does anyone else dread going to their dmv? . I still had our physical from before we moved here 8 years ago, so I had to make changes. That's normally when the issues start. Praise God for none! I believe it was a little gift because he knew how much I dreaded going. . Here's to 35. What I hope will be my best year yet! . . . . . . . . . . . .. #homesteadmama #mountainmama #megamotherhood #farmer #coalminerswife #electricianswife #homestead #homesteading #lifeofafarmer #lifeofahomeschoolmom #lifeofahomemaker #homeschoolmom #homemaker #proverbs31woman #blessedmamahen #rockhillfarmstead
