Truly - as believers we have a sacred duty to train our children up in the way they should go. Why in the world would we send them to be educated by a system that actively works to EXCLUDE the word and name of God? Believe me - I wrestled with this personally when we sent our oldest to public school. I thought she could be a light to others - that the public school needed families like ours. Those assumption were false. Our children are young for a short time. They are not called to be “missionaries” in elementary school. We are not called to martyr our children’s hearts for the sake of a flawed ideal. I also told myself “Well, OUR public school isn’t like that. We know many Christian teachers in our local schools.”. That may be true, but they are also serving a system that (whether blatantly or covertly)has removed God from the equation. I know I have probably ruffled a few feathers - but sometimes we need to know the cold, hard truth. Folks. This is really it. I am nearly finished homeschooling. My husband and I had a morning to ourselves after dropping Grant off at his college shadow day. We had a lot of time to talk about the past 14 years of homeschooling. I think - because of how close we have been to our children - that homeschool moms have a harder time letting go at this point. That’s ok - it is a sacrifice that is fine with me. I think he’s found his destination for the next chapter in his life and I couldn’t be more excited! In the end, here is what I think really mattered: ⭐️Reading Aloud ⭐️English Grammar ⭐️A solid math foundation ⭐️Public speaking & debate ⭐️Service and cultivating empathy ⭐️Time for beauty ⭐️Physical development ⭐️Developing interests This life of homeschooling our children is all consuming and all encompassing. We pour our hearts and souls into these precious people and pray for God’s will to be done. How fortunate was I to have the opportunity, the resources, and the students that I did? It’s been an amazing ride and if I say so, I think I have some amazing kids. 😉 💸💸 And for those of you wondering about the @youneedabudget sweatshirt my hubs is wearing - he is in the process of becoming a YNAB certified budget coach. Hindsight provides perspective.    My children, both now young adults, grew up WAY too fast for my liking. 😉 I am so thankful, however, that we had the opportunity to homeschool, which allowed us to savor so many days.     I got my first iPhone when my children were 5 and 9. I keep thinking how difficult it is for parents now to keep the pace of life SLOW - with all of the demands technology puts on families. The pressure to keep up with others, the text notifications, the instant communication.     𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐋𝐎𝐖 𝐃𝐎𝐖𝐍 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 "𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝".    Living books, handicrafts, beautiful music, going stretches of time without technology - these are just a few ways to give our children (and ourselves!) the gift of slowing down. More than a week ago I stepped away from Instagram. I needed to focus my heart on truth, beauty, and goodness. I needed to leave the “noise” of the online world so I could gain some peace for myself. I love this space and the friends I have here… and I have prayed about ways to spend my time here more wisely. I am called to encourage families and I am also called to boldly live my beliefs. I think this post may be a week late! 😉 So often the #homeschool dads go unnoticed, yet they are the ones who keep the train 🚂 on the tracks. In the early days my husband worked and traveled a lot, making possible our lifestyle of home education. He was my number one supporter, a listening ear, and dependable head of our home. As the kids got older his job brought him home - and then two years ago he left corporate America to invest fully in our homeschool curriculum business. His role has been INVALUABLE. He is chief financial instructor and teaches budgeting and investing to our kids. He has taught personal finance to homeschool kids in our area. He comes alongside our son in all areas, and supports my daughter while away at college. Fathers matter. A Godly father is the greatest treasure. Our boys need these fathers. Our girls need dads like this so they know what type of man to marry ♥️. We’ve discovered that family is the number one priority (behind our faith) - and that the things of this world (career, success…) are fleeting and inconsequential. Homeschooling changed so much about our lives, but I think it transformed my husband the most. As our world seems upside down right now, he is the stalwart man standing up straight, and for that I am thankful. Today I just wanted to scream 😱 as I was watching the news - angry parents yelling at school board members - objecting to their children being taught about gender identity. Stop blaming “the system”. Yes, I understand the need for change. I understand the need to make a system that you pay taxes for work better for you. I WAS that parent - I wasted a couple of years trying to bring about change. All it accomplished was a more angry mom and time gone by with my child still in the same school situation. I learned this: do not sacrifice your child’s education and your sanity for an IDEAL. Pull your child out of school and do the work you signed up for when you became a parent! Give them an education that you have control over and where you know the state will not fill their heads with nonsense. Really. It is that simple. Any other worries you have will work themselves out. I promise. We were never promised easy, and these crazy times call for responsible parents who are willing to do the hard work of training responsible, compassionate, informed young people. If you have any horse lovers, my daughter loves these books by Susan Count! She is about finished with the last book in the series. She said that when she reads these books, she feels like she is watching a movie. My daughter also mentioned that she loves how the characters mention God in the stories.

The Mary of 10 years ago NEVER would have said this: “If my kids don’t go to college I am ok with that.” 🤨 Honestly, a statement like that would have been considered blasphemy in my family. I have two degrees. All of my siblings have degrees. Most of my nieces and nephews have degrees. College is just the next step after high school, right? Wrong. Not for everyone - and I think not for a majority of 18 year olds. Higher prices and lower standards are just two of the reasons that stand out - another is that I really am not interested in encouraging my kids to spend time and money on something just to say they did it… or to satisfy some parental need I have to impress other people. Parties, football games, status - it’s a high price to pay just to have the “college experience”. Now, if there is a goal and a purpose, and it can be paid for at a quality institution, I am all for it. My daughter is in college. She will graduate next year with no debt and hopefully a career plan. But as we look at what comes next for my son, I’m not so sure. This book just arrived yesterday and I am anxious to begin reading it. Our minds are wide open (especially since the pandemic has changed the face of “work” and how we learn, too). If you can learn new skills, hustle, work hard, and be a risk taker I think you can write your own ticket. And, I would like to think that we are in the perfect position to teach our homeschoolers how to do this. Just like with K-12 education, maybe it’s going to take a mass exodus out of the system for people to discover the system is broken! Thoughts? This is a @timehop memory that popped up today - and to be very honest, it hit me hard. I vividly remember reading this sweet little book with Grant. We had a special reading time while dad took Anna to choir rehearsals on Monday nights. We curled up on mom and dad’s big bed and snuggled up to read and drink hot chocolate. 😊 This was such a sweet time ♥️. As my 6’5” boy threw himself down on my bed this morning I had a flashback to these Monday evenings 10 years ago. And, as I look back I clearly see how intentional choices of time (and reading material) MATTER. It may not seem like something so small will make a difference, but with faithfulness and diligence they help produce young people of character and kindness. This story, about a little boy who procures a special treat dishonestly (and then cannot enjoy it because his conscience gnaws at him), is part of a series of books I highly recommend. Keep training up your young people, mamas. Show up each day and faithfully impart your values. Pray for your children and their precious hearts. ♥️ YOU are doing a most important work in a world that needs honest, compassionate young people. YOU are training the leaders of tomorrow. 𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐔𝐄 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐬? ⁣ ⁣ Things have been busy for our 11th grader, so last night we suggested we go out to a local sports bar and get burgers and wings and just have fun before the week began.⁣ ⁣ Grant said he was tired and just wanted to stay home, but we persisted and got him to join us (𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺, 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 "𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨.") - I'm a firm believer in love languages, and I know watching sports (especially when results involve your fantasy football team) and eating food are a couple of ways to my son's heart. 😜⁣ ⁣ He was watching 4 different football 🏈 games and keeping up with his fantasy team at the same time. We had a great time eating, talking, laughing… just enjoying our son.⁣ ⁣ A big piece of cheesecake for dessert really "sweetened" the evening for him, too. 😂⁣ ⁣ We snuck in conversation about college, goals for the future, and how everything is going so far this year. I know mom and dad's hearts were full. As the kids get older I am painfully aware of these moments and how we need to seize them when we can! ⁣ ⁣ We even managed to include our 20-year-old college student - because we texted her to say her homemade Key Lime pie is much better than what we had at the restaurant!  😉⁣ ⁣ 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 - on the way home Grant thanked us for “making him go”. ♥️ ⁣ ⁣ God wove our night together in a beautiful way, and I do believe the Holy Spirit pushed us to "force" Grant to go with us. Civil War Drummer Boy, John Lincoln Clem, comes to life in a LEGO creation. ⠀ This creativity spun off of our #squiltlive “Spirit of America” 🇺🇸 theme - where we learned about the folk song 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏𝒏𝒚 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒎𝒆 and read the wonderful book 𝑪𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒍 𝑾𝒂𝒓 𝑫𝒓𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓 𝑩𝒐𝒚. ⠀ We heard a snare drum 🥁 play an ostinato in a Morton Gould piece based on the folk song. This ostinato represented Morse Code, which was popular during WWII (when Gould composed the piece). One of the biggest benefits of homeschooling has been the sibling relationship. ⠀ Oh - they have their moments - but for the most part they are close to each other because they have so many shared experiences. They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses - they have supported each other through a lot. ⠀ I am not sure this would be the case if they had been away from each other all day. ⠀ As my husband and I have lost all of our parents (except 1), we know the deep importance of and blessing a sibling can be. { DIY Crayon Holder }⁣ ⁣ If you missed it, last year I dressed up some fruit/veggie cans and made some cute crayon cups for the kiddos. I wondered to myself how they would do and if the kids would actually keep the coordinating colors with the colors of the cans (ages at the time was 7,5,2).⁣ ⁣ To my surprise, they all 3 loved it!! It made searching for colors easier on them and it completely took the frustrations of finding colors out. They were even coloring more. Yay! Oh AND they actually did keep the colors in the same cans. Whaaaat?!?! ⁣ ⁣ I’ve been searching for the perfect container to hold them and all the ones I saw just wasn’t what I wanted. So....I made my own! ⁣ ⁣ The best part, it was all FREE. I had all the items on hand already. 🥰 I told my husband what pieces I needed to be cut out of an old wooden pallet and he got to work. I sanded it down, drilled, and put it together. Had wire already and made a handle. Used my leftover paint from my oil rack and...Ta Da! I am pretty proud of myself.⁣😆 ⁣ Now this container is perfect because it shows off the colors of the cans which all the others I saw covered it. Science Units⁣ ⠀⠀⁣ We just purchased these from The Good and The Beautiful and I’m loving what I see so far and can’t wait to start! ⁣(We’ve been doing ELA, Handwriting and Math but hadn’t done their science yet!) ⠀⠀⁣ My favorite part is that it’s pretty much open and go, it incorporates our Creator, it’s made for ALL ages (they have worksheets for different grades), and it has beautiful illustrations. ⁣ ⠀⠀⁣ We are actually going to go through the Safety Unit first. Last night our church youth decorated the tree. ⁣ ⁣ I grew up in a liturgical church ⛪️ and have memories of decorating the tree on the first Sunday of Advent. ⁣ ⁣ We aren’t in “Christmas” mode yet, because we are quietly awaiting the birth of Jesus. Walking through Advent gives our hearts and minds the gift of slowing down, not getting caught up in the “Christmas” you see in the stores, and time to truly anticipate that miraculous baby.⁣ ⁣ As we sang “Light One Candle 🕯 to Watch for Messiah” I was overcome by the enormity of that gift we are anticipating on Christmas Day. 🎄. This is my super amazing friend, Owen. We go to church together. This morning was a big day in the life of our church and we had to take a picture together to commemorate the day... A big part of our #homeschool life has been involvement in our church. ⛪️ 9 years ago (the same time we started #homeschooling) we embarked on a journey to leave a church and help start a new one. It has been an exercise in faith, trust, perseverance, - and so many other things. It has been one of the biggest blessings in our lives. ❤️ This church is our family. My daughter is tremendously attached to the special needs adult ministry. My son has learned to forge and weld with the men of the church and their cross ministry.The adults in our congregation have built into my children into countless ways. This morning was our first Sunday in our 𝐍𝐄𝗪 church building. 🎉It was a joyous service that we've all been looking forward to for a LONG time. Although we are the ONLY homeschoolers in the church, everyone is extremely supportive of what we do. (Our pastor homeschooled his own children all the way through high school, though!) Last week Grant assisted in installing the speakers and part of the sound system. We got a call asking if he wanted to help and learn. Ummmm. Yes! Once people know you want mentors to build into your children they are generally excited to help - people want to share what they know with young people! I have been searching for the perfect container/caddy/storage for our crayons. We have been using a small plastic tub, which has been working great! But I was noticing that it just took so long for them to find a color because they are all piled on top of each other AND they were getting frustrated. So I wanted to try and make it easier. ⁣ ⁣ This is basically a test and we shall see how they like it! I definitely wanted to share this with all of you. ⁣ ⁣ { DIY Crayon Holders }⁣ ⁣ What you’ll need:⁣ Mini veggie cans⁣ Card Stock or Washi Tapes⁣ Scissors ⁣ Lemon EO⁣ ⁣ If you are like me and don’t want to wait around for empty cans, just dump the veggies into a container to eat for the week. Then wash the cans! Tip: Soak the cans into water and the labels will come right off. ⁣ ⁣ Use Lemon Oil for any leftover sticky residue (yes it works so well!) ⁣ ⁣ I personally used Washi Tape and wrapped the cans with the colors I wanted. As parents, we are always concern if our children are learning enough. It’s a perfect way to teach your little ones the alphabet! Make it fun, make it colorful, make it 𝐒𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐋𝐄. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If they like being outside, get a stick and have them practice writing their ABCs or name in the dirt/sand. (𝐄𝐋𝐀)⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Grab buttons, rocks, flowers, legos and count or separate them in different shapes and sizes. (𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐇)⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Look for bugs and gaze at the blue sky. Create a nature scavenger hunt and then talk about what you’ve found. I knew I needed something fun and educational that will keep my son interested in reading and spelling. He seemed excited to meet the 1000mins end goal. 💪😍 . Nine years ago our lives were full of change. We had started #homeschooling, and shortly after that our church split in two. It was painful and hard for us to leave, but - standing on principle - I knew we couldn’t stay. We were “homeless” for a time, visiting many churches, but nothing being quite the right fit for us. Finally, we decided to attend a new little church that had been started by former church members where we had left. We walked in the door and immediately knew we were HOME. ❤️ We signed the church charter that day - and the rest is history. Fast forward to today. We blessed a new church ⛪ building for our precious church family - Word of God Lutheran. In many ways our homeschool journey and the growth of this church have paralelled each other. I’ve watched my #children and this church grow together. We have had SO MANY blessings, a couple years of hardship, all of them experiences that have grown my faith in amazing ways, and an abundance of friends that have become like family. As we gathered today and wrote verses and wishes on the steel beams, I was filled with hope and joy. Nothing is perfect, but by God’s grace we are growing and building into each other to the best of our abilities. This church has been 100% supportive of our family’s homeschool efforts, and for that I am thankful. My children have adults that love and care for them, and ample opportunities to serve  others. It’s fun now to watch my own children building into the younger kids’ lives, too. Today Noah wrapped up four years of volunteering at the San Diego Zoo. What a blessing it's been to watch him grow in his public speaking skills and leadership skills while enjoying up close encounters with the animals. I had just finished a chapter from our Read Aloud book, “Out of Darkness”. (For those who didn’t see my previous post, it’s about a boy, Louis Braille, who invented Braille!) A moment later, an Amazon package arrived at the door. I thought to myself....”Gosh, I must be out of it because I don’t remember ordering anything!” I opened it and it’s a counting book in Braille! Oh. My. Gosh. Tears sprung to my eyes! Whoever you are, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your thoughtful and beautiful gift. The kids are absolutely loving it and so am I!! This counting book in Braille is so much fun because even the pictures inside are all raised up and have textures. Out of Darkness . This is a story that makes us relive the life of Louis Braille. A young man who lost his eye sight due to an accident which turned into an infection and needing antibiotics which at that time there was none. 😳 He was just 4 years old when he became completely blind. . We are half way through the book but it’s been interesting how much I can relate (not letting my limitations stop me). I have my central vision but when it’s dark outside, I might as well close my eyes because it’s hard to see anything and I have zero peripheral vision. (Imagine lookin into a TP ROLL) . If you haven’t guessed already, Louis Braille invented Braille! ❤️ . One thing I love about homeschooling is that I can make a book/story come to life. I let the kids use my white cane so that they could step into the shoes of Louis Braille as a child navigating around. They had many questions and it was neat to help answer them as I could. Now if I could just get a ride to the library, I can have the kids touch some Braille books.....😊 . Louis knew there had to be a better way for blind people to be able to read and write and communicate. I love that his determination allowed him to discover Braille and now we use it years later. The downside of being apart of a charter homeschool is that you have to return the non consumables when you leave it (we are switching to a different charter school so that we can support our family/friend!) . Last week I posted this in my InstaStories that we had been learning about Johnny Appleseed. . I loved learning about this man growing up but reading this book with all the stories just makes him come more alive! . So many people and stories talked about a strange odd man. But he was loved and he loved animals, plants, and all people. He took care of those in need with what he had...apples! . We don’t need a fancy big car or money to help one another. Use what you’ve got NOW. ❤️ I hope I can leave this Earth with a good testimony such as he. . I’m only in my 2nd year of homeschooling and I feel like this year I have learned SO MUCH!!! I am learning how my children work and learn together. I am learning (slowly) to teach from rest and not panic when I change things up and it isn’t exactly following the curriculum. Are they learning? YES. Are they able to apply what they’ve learn? YES. Are they enjoying it? YES! Then that’s what matters. . TIP: During Read-Aloud-Time, have your children draw what you’re reading about. I feel like it helps the brain connect and I see how they are able to obtain the information being read more. I know I’ve read the benefits of this before but can’t remember where but it’s sooo cool!
