Starting From Scratch In Rural, Jamaica | Our Journey As A Homeschooling Family & Remote Entrepreneurs I am Makeda, a wife and mother of two living in rural Jamaica and embracing a path of remote business building. I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother who is also committed to tending to daily home chores to do my part in upkeeping my family. My husband is a self-initiated subsistence farmer, originating from St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. We moved to Jamaica, my home country, from America in 2020 with the intention of co-creating a more sustainable lifestyle. Specifically, due to us being remote entrepreneurs and digital nomads, having no consistent contracted stream of income and in the process of building our businesses from the ground up, we face many financial restrictions. Our Bodies Change I've struggled for years with self-doubt, self sabotage, insecurities, and more. As I'm getting older, I am becoming more comfortable in my own skin. My husband has helped me tremendously with this. He told me when I was 18 to look in the mirror and tell myself that I'm beautiful every single day until I believed it. He even added a beautiful Chinese sticker on my mirror in my truck that symbolizes beauty so I wouldn't forget. When I became a mom, everything shifted in my mind. I no longer worried about my body shape, if I looked as cute as someone else, if I was a certain weight, etc. I was living because I was and am happy. I have moments of weakness and still judge my skin. I see a woman who has extra skin in areas and cellulite. I see other women with more fit bodies and think, what the hell, why am I not fit anymore. But I am. You are, too. If you are exercising regularly, eating healthy for the most part, loving life, you're where your body should be. Now, if you're eating unhealthy foods and partaking in unhealthy habits, then you may not be that healthy. Our bodies change due to the season we're in. I was so insecure about my arms. I have larger arms. I always have. Since I don't lift weights daily, they become flabby. It's how my body has always been. I'll lift again once I'm feeling better. The point I'm trying to make (I know, get to it already, right?), is that the part I was most insecure about has been the area that has lifted my babies up. It's the body part that lifts up when praising Jesus. It is the area that helps me complete tasks. So, instead of shaming any part of our body, let's give thanks to it. I don't look the same as I did when I was 20. Nor should I. I don't look the same as I did yesterday. Nor will I. No botox. No filler. I've lived. I've loved deeply, and God made me. Puerto Rico was good for me. I saw women of all shapes and sizes celebrating their bodies. It was empowering. I encourage you to love yourself exactly where you're at. Rock it, Mama! A huge thanks to my husband for loving all of me. Every version of me for the past 22 years we've been together.

I feel like my brain can slow down just a little bit from the funky two step of the week. I’m still quite busy on the weekend, especially since the work week of a realtor really starts on Friday, HOWEVER I’m becoming more intentional about enjoying the weekend. 👉 Parenting is hard in the BEST of circumstances. Add in some of the things in this graphic and it gets even harder. When we scroll parenting content, we might think being this calm and zen parent is as easy as taking a course or joining a membership. But that's just not the case. When we look at everything we might have on our plates, our struggle to meet these perpetually calm parenting expectations makes sense. Anyone relate?
⭐While I know there is a ton of talk about kids and screens, I personally try focus more on my own screen use and what I'm modeling for them. Which isn't always great to be honest! I've been transparent with my older kids about my journey to be more mindful with my phone, even giving them permission to call me out if they catch me slipping into old habits—like peeking at my phone at a stoplight 🚦😬 or looking at my phone when someone in real life is talking to me. 😅They definitely don't hesitate to keep me in check, and I'm grateful for it! 🚨What's one phone habit you'd like to break and/or model differently for your kids? 👉For me? I focus the most on having my phone out of sight and away in the glovebox while I'm in the car, because that is something I DEFINITELY don't want them doing once they drive.
