Was Abraham Lincoln's renomination by the Republican Party in 1864, in the midst of the Civil War, inevitable? Not exactly. The party's 1864 convention was held in Baltimore in June as the "National Union Convention," the name an attempt to attract non-Republicans in the North who supported the war effort. It came during months of lack of progress by the Union army on the battlefields. A faction in the party, known as the Radicals, wanted to replace Lincoln and have a new nominee, perhaps General Ulysses Grant. A Lincoln cabinet member arrived in Baltimore for the convention and wrote that "the radicals are here in great force." Another commentator observed, "there was a radical grumpiness, an anti-Lincoln, anti-Blair, anti-Seward, anti-Cabinet bias, a feeling that all things they detested about his administration were being crammed down their throats." One of Lincoln's aides attended a meeting on the eve of the convention, at which the Lincoln Administration was denounced as full "of malfeasance, of tyranny, of corruption, of illegal acts, of abused power . . . and repression." One of the president's aides at the meeting was appalled at the criticism and wrote, "Has Lincoln no friends left?" Despite the undercurrent of discontent, Lincoln went on to be renominated with little formal opposition. In an era of one-term presidents, he was the first president in twenty-four years win his party's approval for a second term. He went on to beat the Democratic nominee, General George McClellan, in the 1864 election. In an effort to broaden the party's appeal, it was also decided at the Baltimore convention to put a Democrat who supported the war on the ticket with Lincoln. Vice President Hannibal Hamlin of Maine was dumped and was replaced by Andrew Johnson of Tennessee. It was a decision that would have fateful consequences for the nation, when Lincoln was assassinated only a few weeks into his second term and Johnson became president. Lincoln Museum, a simple mosaic of red and white squares (it's under thick glass hence the blurry photo). I was there for a 3 day demonstration so I went and had a look and spotted the internal borderlines of the squares so I could direct visitors to have a look. It was only on the last morning that I took the time to have a really CLOSE look and what I saw made me kick myself for nearly missing it! The Lincoln Museum one was of the best museums I have ever visited. It brings you through Lincoln’s childhood starting with a cabin you can enter, to his early years as a lawyer, to his family, to his time as president, to his assassination. I really enjoyed the shows about his life and the civil war. An exhibition by Jason Wilsher-Mills called Jason and His Argonauts Tour is currently on at the Lincoln Museum Gallery, which started this weekend. Great fun as well as informative and recommend for children. It is about the hardships of disabilities ( evident in text) but more so that the disabled are not redundant and he has picked out the fun characteristics of individuals. There are 2 interactives there for the child in us all, which were such great fun. There is the magnetic board with 3 of the characters with seperate body parts so you can create your own versions of the people. Then there is the digital. First you can play with the digital man on the screen, and at some point I had him spinning around, don’t ask me how. Then you can scan code and then you can move him around the room next to people while he is moving legs and arms up and down like he is dancing. And I saved that link in my Notes on phone, so now I can go to link and have him appear wherever I want. Recently i had the pleasure of running a workshop with @i.jo.tolley, in collaboration with two wonderful @lincsmuseumusher staff members, Jenny G and Rachel O. We called the event #ArtAndAccessibility. It was a full day of art making with a series of questions written by #JoTolley and I, to help dig deeper into what accessability in the arts and art/museum spaces could look like in the future. In the event we had a #HealthandSocialcare trained #SupportWorker, (thank you @kerry.langsdale) to help the group tackle our questions and get the most out of the day. The workshop was greatly inspired by the @cvaneastmidlands funded, accessibility tool kit (See the #CVANEastmidlands website to read) that Jo and I wrote a couple of uears ago now, with the support of the ever understanding and supportive @coletteg13. Jo and i look forward to working closly with more spaces and with the amazing staff at the @lincsmuseumusher in the future. I love a good book and I love history! 📚 Tonight I attended the talk, ‘The History of England’s Cathedrals’ by Nicholas Orme @lincsmuseumusher. Nicholas gave an insightful talk about how cathedrals have faced challenges through the ages but how, ultimately, they are robust and adaptable organisations that have stood the test of time. ⛪️ As someone who has previously worked at a cathedral for several years, I will always find them fascinating and awe-inspiring places. Celebrating Presidents' Day by reminiscing a 2019 visit made to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum (and book/gift shop) on the Lincoln Memorial University campus in Harrogate, TN. There have been some major renovations and additions since my visit so I hope to return soon. In honor of Presidents' Day today, we wanted to share some photos and tidbits we learned from recent visits to a few Abraham Lincoln sites nearby. One of DSC's Community First groups, Central Illinois Tourism, visited the @lincolnhomenps in Springfield and saw the first and only home Abraham Lincoln owned and lived in for the 17 years leading up to his presidency. Lincoln purchased this home for $1,500 in 1844 and much of the original foundation, structure, and walls remain!! They also visited the @museumofthegrandprairie and learned about Lincoln's time as a lawyer in Illinois. The group has become very interested in the history of our central Illinois area, and their curiousity has grown as they've inquired about history outside of the group. The stunning #DuncanGrant #murals in the Russell Chantey, painted1956-58. Unfortunately I was only able to peak through the bars as access is still quite restricted to the chapel. - “In 1953 Duncan Grant was commissioned to decorate Lincoln Cathedral’s Russell Chantry with a set of murals depicting St Blaise, the patron saint of wool workers. The mural unveiled in 1959 remained private for a number of years, possibly because Duncan Grant chose to put a little too much of his own life onto the walls, being reopened for public view after restoration in 1990. The murals were painted at a time in British art history when mural painting was far more likely to occur on secular or municipal buildings and it is partly this that makes Grant’s chapel murals a rarity.” Information provided by #LincolnMuseum / #UsherGallery

Had a lovely time catching up with my friend Rocky and having lunch at Toby Carvery celebrating a new year. We went to the Grayson Perry exhibition (2nd time for me). Over the decades I have seen some artwork more than once and it is just great how you see things you may of not noticed before or you see it in a different light. Grayson Perry Tapestries because of the amount of details within each one you can’t help but see things you didn’t notice before. The highlight of our visit to Springfield was definitely the @lincolnmuseum. I am not being hyperbolic when I say that this was the best history museum experience I’ve ever seen. Period. This museum is truly an experience and puts the audience into the story (and many times into Lincoln’s own head) with brilliant stagecraft, lighting, design, layout, themed elements, interactivity, imaginative shows, and larger-than-life set pieces. Around every corner is a superbly crafted scene that the audience is invited to step into—from young Lincoln’s log cabin to the White House. And the journey is punctuated with tentpole scenes that are just breathtaking. My favorite was the Lincoln funeral scene. While it definitely wasn’t a one-for-one replica of the capitol rotunda, it might as well have been. The room was cavernous and had a sense of epic scale. All the details were there—the coffin, the black banners. And the emotion was there. It felt like we literally stepped into that moment in time. My four-year-old, who I didn’t expect to be into the museum, was moved to tears—mourning someone that had been dead for more than 150 years! This is the way that history should be presented—with all the emotion and care that brings the humanity out, making the audience understand the past in a more personal way. This museum gives us a better understanding of both Lincoln the man and the time in which he lived. I’ll be gushing periodically about this place as the days go on, but you simply must go if you love history and themed or museum design.
