Have you got your hands on a copy of the gripping and propulsive debut by award-winning investigative journalist Louise Milligan yet? The Pheasants Nest follows main character Kate Delaney, who has made the biggest mistake of her life. She picked the wrong guy to humiliate on a girls' night out and now she is living every woman's worst nightmare. Kate finds herself bound and gagged in the back of a car being driven god knows where by a man whose name she doesn't know, and she is petrified about what's in store for her. As a journalist who is haunted by the crimes she's had to report over her career, Kate is terrifyingly familiar with the statistics about women who go missing—and the fear and trauma behind the headlines. She knows only too well how those stories usually end. As the suspense escalates, Kate's boyfriend Liam is left behind, struggling with his shock, fear and desperation as the police establish a major investigation. The detectives face their own feelings of anguish and futility as they reflect on the cases they didn't solve in time and the victims they couldn't save. They know Kate's chances of survival diminish with every passing hour ⏳ Copies available in your local BOOK FACE 📙 #crimefiction #bookrecommendations #shoplocal #localbookshop

La famosa frase “Say hello to my little friend!”

What did you read for #readchristie2024 ? I didn't read the official pick because I've already read it this year :) I went for a different 1930s book. LORD EDGWARE DIES is excellent. I loved the writing, the plotting, the characters, the misdirection - all of it. It's set up from the absolute beginning that Lady Edgware wants her husband dead. She even says she'll do it if she can't get Poirot to convince her husband to divorce her. So when he does die, and she has an alibi, Poirot must investigate and find out the truth. Perfect as an example of Christie brilliance, this one is a great start to the world of Monsieur Poirot if you're reading out of order. I'm going to pick my May read today. Any suggestions? I need a Christie book published in the 1930s. #agathachristie #lordedgwaredies #classiccrime #crimefiction #queenofcrime #paperbackcollector #bookcollection #ukbookstagrammer #bookstagram #mysterybook #cosycrime #Poirot

. . . . . . #crimefiction #crimeliterature #bookaddict #booksatgram #bookishlove #bookstagrammer #booksaremagic #азчета #обичамдачета

Murder in The Mews - Agatha Christie Rating: ⭐⭐⭐/5 For the #readchristie2024 challenge in April, I picked Murder in The Mews, a collection of four short stories featuring the famous detective Hercule Poirot. Published in 1937, each mysterious case is a mini version of crime, suspense, and characterization that makes for an enjoyable quick read. Although the stories don't go into excessive detail about alibis, characters, and evidence like a long-form book, Murder in the Mews does stand out for portraying Poirot's intelligence. The four stories in the book are: - Murder in the Mews ( murder or suicide? The best out of all the four stories) - The Incredible Theft (a spy-based story in which significant military papers disappear, the plot may not be so incredible! ) - Dead Man's Mirror (a classic locked-room mystery) - Triangle at Rhodes (a dangerous love triangle story that ultimately leads to murder, somewhat similar to the plot of "Evil Under The Sun") Overall, this is an interesting short read of four novellas for all Poirot fans! #readchristie2024 #murderinthemews #agathachristie #herculepoirot #crimefiction #mystery #bookstagram #bookphotography #bookreview #books #bookstagrammer #bookworm #reading

My Yellowknife Library bookclub pick for April was Bright Young Women and I finished it off last night (just in time for bookclub today). I found this book to be a page turner and really liked the story from the point of view of two characters - Pamela and Ruth. Pamela spans through the 2 timelines where Ruth is in the 1970’s timeline. The novel is about the women whose lives have been affected by a serial killer and the journey they go through. There is much more to it but I don’t want to give any spoilers. I did like this book and it was a page turner. I did find there were a lot of (what I deemed) unnecessary storyline or filler. But I did find it an interesting read and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. #books #bookstagram #bookclub #brightyoungwomen #readwomen #crimefiction #mysterythriller #historicalfiction #aprilreads #springreading #paperback #librarybooks

“The only thing he regretted was that he had not seen all the world yet.” Felt compelled to reread “The Talented Mr Ripley” by Patricia Highsmith after watching the excellent TV series adaptation by Netflix. Have you read any of the other Ripley books? I’m keen to track them down. Also, according to the introduction in my edition, Highsmith had “an unutterably sad life”. I know next to nothing about her, what about you? Apparently, “The Talented Miss Highsmith” is worth a read. Fun fact: Highsmith’s favourite book was Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment- it sits unread in my shelves.

🌟🌟🌟💫 This was my first time reading a story within a story so I will say I enjoyed this twist on my normal reading experience. I was fully ready to fall completely in love with this book and though I enjoyed it I felt unsatisfied by the end. The story feels incomplete to me and I am left wondering if all the author's energy had been put into one story instead of two it might have left me with less questions. Over all I'm glad I read it but this one will be another trophy wall book and not a re-reader for me. Favorite quotes - "I’ve been starving for at least three hours, afraid to ask the muse for time off to buy food. She’s fickle and easily offended, likely to sulk if I don’t give her my complete attention when she’s gracing me with her presence. Perhaps that’s why writers starve in garrets—because the literary muse is a sadistic fascist." "The story of her life etched on her skin… She’s like a walking book. Patterns and portraits and words. Mantras of love and power. I wonder how much of it is fiction. What story would I tell if I had to wear it on my body?" #thewomaninthelibrary #thewomaninthelibrarysularigentill #sularigentill #mystery #thriller #suspense #crimefiction #epistolarynovel #bookreview #review #book #threeandahalfstars #3.5stars

Overall Book Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ————————— I was recommended to read this book last year, and for this being my first Stephen King book, I loved it! I really enjoyed getting to read the different point of views from Holly, the victims, and the perpetrators themselves. This wasn’t a classic “whodunit” type of crime story but more of a “whydunit.” We read how the victims are taken and tortured, but some of the murders are done off page. I felt this added to the eeriness of the book, making the reader imply how the victims were “taken care of.” All along, the reader slowly starts understanding why the killers are doing what they’re doing, while simultaneously rooting for Holly as she gets closer to solving the missing person case. The book also takes place at the height of the Covid pandemic, which is highlighted throughout the book. I think the author used this more as a way for the reader to relate to the story, instead of highlighting his own personal beliefs. Overall, I recommend this to those who love reading crime, thrillers, and horrors! This book was a page turner and will definitely keep you reading till the very end! Can’t wait to read more Stephen King books! 📚 • • • #bookreview #bookstagram #bookstagramcommunity #bookrecommendations #bookrecommendation #holly #stephenking #stephenkingbooks #thriller #horror #bookworm #booksbooksbooks #crimefiction #thrillerbooks #horrorbooks

Onto book 8, Victim 2117 in the Department Q series by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Another chilling Nordic noir crime thriller. The newspaper refers to her only as Victim 2117--the two thousand one hundred and seventeenth refugee to die in the Mediterranean Sea. But to three people, the unnamed victim is so much more, and her death sets off a chain of events that throws Department Q, Copenhagen's cold cases division led by Detective Carl Mrck, into a deeply dangerous--and deeply personal--case: a case that not only reveals dark secrets about the past, but has deadly implications for the future. With the help of the Department Q squad--Carl, Rose, and Gordon--Assad must finally confront painful memories from his years in Syria and Afghanistan in order to hunt down Ghallib. #amreading #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookhoarder #bookhunter #bookhunting #booklover #booknerd #bookseries #bookworm #crazybooklady #crimefiction #nordicnoir #seriesread #seriesreader #seriesreading # #suspense #thriller #jussiadlerolsen #Department #carlmørck #victim2117

Some great books this month, also managed to finish a few hanging over from March. Highlights were definitely "Dark Road Home" by Sheila Bugler & "A Bitter Remedy" by Alis Hawkins. "Dark Road Home" was a great Irish-set mystery thriller, with lots of secrets to uncover. Bonus points to Sheila for joining us on Pigeonhole for a read-a-long and putting up with gremlins on day 2. "A Bitter Remedy" was a very interesting read, it had the whodunit set in Victorian Oxford with the added intrigue of the "quack remedies". The two protagonists were great characters; Basil (Oxford Professor dealing with a life in the closet) and the fiesty student Non (trying not to upset the patriarchy [too much]). Can see why it has been double nominated at the CWA Daggers. I am looking forward to reading the follow up soon. Other books to note were "The Potting Shed Murder", which was a lovely cozy crime read, and "The Shadow Key" which was another historical whodunit, this time with a dark, gothic atmosphere and shrouded in mysticism from Wales and elsewhere in the world. Non-Crime highlight was "The Scandalous Life of Ruby Devereaux", this faux memoir was so well written it felt real, I was totally absorbed in Ruby's life as it played out on the pages. If you need a (sometimes emotional) break from crime, I can definitely recommend it. We have a truly great penultimate entry in the Shetland series from Ann Cleeves, who manages to recall the series' beginning whilst also looking firmly forward to its end. The penultimate entry in Shetland sees some of the best character writing and plotting of the series, with the book's major weakness being in biting off more plot than it can chew, for the ending is a little contrived. The premise recalls Raven Black, the series' first entry. We have returned to Ravenswick in midwinter, and red clothing is seen against the grey and black to indicate a body. But instead of a girl dead in the snow, we have a mysterious woman dead in an empty croft, the body revealed by a landslide ... You can read the rest of the review on my blog. Our new release! Just #99p/ #99cents for launch. DEADLY MOVE by Robert McCracken. An arrogant business tycoon who is flashing his cash around #liverpool becomes a suspect in DI Tara Grogan’s investigation into a man killed in his home. Gripping mystery fiction. Link in bio. Seeking justice for murder, a tough female detective locks horns with a powerful man… When an anti-social man is murdered in his home near the dreary Treadwater Estate, the police initially suspect someone within the community has taken matters into their own hands. But DI Tara Grogan is alerted to the victim’s connection to self-made business tycoon Sebastian Logan-Sharp, who has recently returned to the city of Liverpool, and is causing a ruckus. He is flashing cash for big development projects and investment schemes. But no one seems to like Sebastian. Not even his wife. And, from local protestors and women’s rights activists to his child’s nanny, everyone wants a piece of him. By making him a murder suspect, DI Grogan adds herself to that list. But once the tenacious detective goes on the warpath and enters the world of the billionaire, a fair few surprises will put her abilities truly to the test. DEADLY MOVE is the eighth standalone mystery in Robert McCracken’s bestselling series featuring headstrong Detective Inspector Tara Grogan. . . . . . #femaleprotagonist #crimefiction #crime #mysterybooks #detectivefiction #murdermystery #murdermysterybooks #policeprocedural #liverpoollife #liverpoolartist #strongwomen #bookstagram #instabookstagram #instabooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramfeature #bookstagramer #bookstan #bookstagramcommunity #bookstagrammersunite #crimeseries #crimefictionseries #organisedcrime #businessman

Deadly Animals - Marie Tierney ☆☆☆☆ “She wasn’t going anywhere except into her own future - miseries, battles and all.” 13 year old Ava Bonney has unusual interests and a fascination with anthropology and osteology (yes, I did have to Google that word). One night while out visiting her bone farm, she stumbles upon the body of her classmate Mickey Grant. Unable to just sit and wait for the killer to be caught Ava conducts her own investigation alongside Detective Delahaye, helping him in more ways that he realises, but there is a lot more bite left in the killer. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The storyline was intricate and very well thought out and the characters were extremely likeable. As a debut novel for Marie Tierney it is very good and so beautifully written. I very rarely read thrillers anymore because my CSI-Law and Order-Silent Witness addled brain has figured out “who it is” about two thirds of the way through and that is what happened here, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it any less, especially the end. I would say the only thing I struggled with was how intensely the settings and locations were described. Being set in Birmingham a lot of specific places were described and I just had trouble envisioned it. Some of the highest praise I can give though, is that I can imagine this as a Silent Witness episode and think it would have made a great one. Hopefully I’ll be reading more of Marie Tierney in the future. __________________________________ #books #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookcommunity #bookstafriends #deadlyanimals #marietierney #thrillerbooks #crimefiction #crimenovel #tacklingmytbr #tbr

Book no.2 of the adventures of AIDE Lock & police detective Kat Frank. 🚨 It's great to be back with the characters, and getting to know them all a bit more. Shy, quiet DS Debbie Brown is well underway with her pregnancy with a nice little interlude where she daydreams about a plate of hash browns and two fried eggs - cue my photo 🍳 The recent release of the Humane AI Pin (and subsequent panning in reviews) makes me LOL about the realism of the tech involved with AIDE Lock, but sometimes you have to suspend that disbelief. A live murder investigation that turns into a hunt for a serial killer, the threat of being taken off the case, and a race against time to save a colleague... All adds up to a great read which has heavy hints that book no. 3 is in the pipeline. #leaveNoTrace #joCallaghan #sequel #aideLock #crimefiction

☔️ APRIL WRAP UP ☔️   Did you read any books by new-to-you authors last month? 🙋🏼‍♀️   I tend to read many of the same authors, often because I’m a completist and trying to finish a mystery series or the entire bibliography of a favorite. But I did try a few new-to-me authors in April and found a couple of new favorites among them. Of the 11 books I read last month, five were by authors I have not read before.   📸 See any here you would like to read or already have? ⬇️⬇️⬇️   🕵🏻‍♂️ Silverview by John le Carre, his last book. Not as grim as some of his earlier books (I’m still traumatized by The Spy Who Came in from the Cold).   🐴 Dead Lions by Mick Herron, the second in the Slow Horses series. I can’t wait to read more and watch the show.   🎿 The King of the Rainy Country by Nicolas Freeling, which won the 1967 Edgar Award for best mystery. He is one of my new favorites.   🏇 The Reivers by William Faulkner, his last novel, winner of the 1963 Pulitzer Prize, and way more accessible that other Faulkner books.   ⛵️ Julius by Daphne du Maurier, the April pick for our Du Maurier Deep Dive readalong organized by @hazevictor. A well told story about an unlikeable protagonist.   👑 Ivanhoe by Walter Scott, a highlight of my month. Loved it!   🛩️ Pocketful of Posies by Thomas Reed, a somewhat complicated but charming family story.   🎧 NOT PICTURED 🎧   🪄 Death and the Conjurer by Tom Mead, a thoroughly entertaining start to his mystery series featuring magician turned sleuth Joseph Spector.   ❄️ Snow in April by Rosamund Pilcher. I’ve only read The Shell Seekers so am happy to come back to read more by her.   🦬 Winter Count by Barry Lopez. Brian Doyle named this one of the 20 Greatest Oregon Books Ever, so I was surprised that none of the essays in this classic book of nature writing have a connection to Oregon other than Lopez himself.   🔍 The Mitford Murders by Jessica Fellowes. I enjoyed everything about this creative historical mystery and Fellowes is definitely a new favorite.   I hit the road early this morning for my road trip to Omaha so tried the scheduling feature. I hope it worked! 🤞🏻   #monthlywrapup #aprilreads
