Ludki / Dhabdi Vintage Embroidered Veil / shawl. This is a traditional wedding veil /shawl by the Machhukantha Rabari community of Morbi, Saurashtra region of Gujarat. This veil is regarded as auspicious attire during the marriages as in the making of such beautiful veils 3 different communities were involved. The wool comes from Rabari itself as they are shepherds. They sheer the wool and then it is given to Vankars (weavers ) to weave who belong to another community and then it is given to Khatri muslim community for tie and dye and then it gets back to Rabari ladies who do elaborate embroidery on it. This tradition is extinct now. No more such shawls are worn unfortunately and not available any more. Embroidered with wool and cotton threads with mirrors on tie dyed local sheep wool. Square chain, herringbone, interlaced, running, couched stitches etc. Brighter colours in embroidery is part of the cultural identity of Rabari communities. The wool is sourced from sheep and spun by the women. Dyed a dark colour, the wool is then woven on a narrow-width loom. Here two long pieces are joined vertically, and the joint is covered with beautiful, colourful embroidery. Mandala, trees of life, Swastika, peacocks, stylised flowers embroidered in bright colours celebrate through motifs fertility, celebration, and fecundity, intrinsic to the nomadic community of Rabaris. The name “Suzani” originates from the Persian word for needle, “suzan”. It is a type of embroidered and decorative textile traditionally handwoven in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan by the women in a bride’s family as part of her wedding dowry. Each unique design tells a story using traditional symbols and motifs such as the sun and the moon, flowers, leaves and vines, fruits (especially pomegranates - whose seeds symbolise fertility) and sometimes fish and birds. These motifs were believed to imbue the Suzanis with spiritual powers, offering protection or strength to their owners. #throwbackthursday to when I visited Salisbury Museum and saw their exhibition about Thomas Hardy. I was particularly intereated in how the exhibition highlighted women in his life. This dress was worn by Hardy's sister Kate Hardy. She studied as a teacher in the building the Salisbury Museum is now in, but found the training oppressive and demeaning to women and quit. The exhibition said she had a career, remained unmarried and financially independent, but didn't say what her career was in. A really fascinating day at @tanpoponoye in Nara today, particularly spending time in their textiles studio, of course! The weaver in the first photo is currently exhibiting her amazing woven work in Perth, Australia ✨ Again, really interesting to see people's unique styles of weaving, many have been working in this medium for 20-30 years. Sachiko creates designs in a sketchbook to set the mood and colourscape for her pieces, and that way, when different people are supporting her, she can stay true to her original concept. She weaves completely independently using one hand. It was also a highlight to be invited to stitch alongside two other women on a cloth that they had drawn designs onto, up cycling it into a new curtain panel. Was fortunate enough to visit the textile conservation studio to check on the progress of some 19th century curtains. The one on the left has been cleaned while the one on the right is yet to be done. Light damage was casuing the background fabric to decay which was releasing acids which in turn caused more rapid decay. Washing has helped remove some of these acids. The team will then stabilise the fabric and add a new lining to minimise future light damage. Super excited to be visiting Ban Thung Hong, a tranquil village on the outskirts of Phrae in North Thailand. In the heart of the Golden Triangle almost equidistant between Chiang Mai and the Laos border, Ban Thung Hong has become renowned for producing exquisite traditional indigo textiles. A sizeable Phuan community, originally from Laos, settled in Phrae bringing their indigo craftsmanship with them, after being displaced from their homeland when the borders of Siam were expanded in the late 19th century. In this region where the green rolling hills are irrigated by the Yom River and its tributaries, the acanthus and indigofera tinctoria plants central to indigo production flourish. The province and village is home to many weavers. Their specialty is cotton. They use "mo hom" indigo to dye their yarns a range of blues and produce handwoven organic indigo fabrics The village artisans make use of tie-dyeing and batik to create intricate patterns on the textiles. The word “indigo” comes from the Greek word “indikon” which means from India. Indigo is a chemical compound found in roughly 50 different plants around the world. India domesticated indigo around 2,000 B.C. and has always been the largest producer and exporter. Ludki - Vintage Wedding Shawls. These are traditional wedding veils/shawls by the Rabari community of North east of Kutch, Gujarat. These veils are regarded as auspicious attire during the marriages as in the making of such beautiful veils 3 different communities were involved. The wool comes from Rabari itself as they are shepherds. They sheer the wool and then it is given to Vankars (weavers ) to weave who belong to another community then it is given to Khatri muslim community for tie and dye and then it gets back to Rabari ladies who do elaborate embroidery on it. This tradition is gone extinct now. No more such shawls are worn unfortunately and not available any more. Embroidered with cotton and silk threads Square chain, herringbone and couched stitches. 40/45 years of age approximately and in very good condition. (It has minor repair) Size - 100 cm X 262 cm.
