On the morning of 11th March 1864, at the foot of the current Dam Flask reservoir their was a hamlet called Dam Flask. 24 hrs later it had effectively been swept away in what became known as the Great Sheffield Flood, which despite being acknowledged as the greatest civilian disaster of Victorian Britain, is rarely known outside of the Steel City. Sheffield was a booming city at the turn of the 1800's and needed to water it's citizens - as the 1832 cholera outbreak had proved. In 1801 the population was 31k. By 1851 there were already 135,000 people. So dams were planned and constructed. But on this fateful night when the banks of Dale Dyke Dam broke, 700 million gallons of water spilled down the Loxley River valley taking everything in its path. It accounted for over 100 deaths at Malin Bridge and was starting to wane, before it 1st met the Rivelin & then crashed into the Don. Neepsend was next with near another 100 dead. Houses and the people in them never stood a chance & bodies were found as far away as Rotherham & Doncaster. Sheffield's 7 & 150 miles of rivers, on a stormy malevolent night had wreaked havoc and by the next morning 250 people had died with an estimated 30 more dying due to the after effects. Last weekend to mark the 160th anniversary we did a guided walk @sheffieldgeneralcemeterytrust where we were introduced to a number of the heartbreaking stories & some of the 27 unidentified graves - as well as the whole Gannon & Peters families. If there was a light at the end of the tunnel, engineering standards improved but it was a case of too little too late for the people of the great Steel City 😞 If you're ever at The Fat Cat pub check out the water level markers!! A steep and leg-burning loop to Loxley Valley and back with Tabby this afternoon. Definitely an area to explore again. Continuing with the theme of #MalinBridge, this is the fabulous water wheel that can be found there. It was attached to the old Corn Mill that was built at the start of the last century, harnessing the powers of the two rivers, and operated until the mid 1950's. My Mum and Dad tell me that teenagers in the 1940s and 50s used to often hang out there and that's where they first met! The mill building and wheel have been restored and the building intself converted into flats. They're both listed however and so there are strict rules to ensure #history is preserved. #cornmill #waterwheel #sheffieldhistory #photosofsheffield #loxleyriver #rivelin
