We walked to check on the tadpoles but sadly they were all gone ๐ช It's been so warm and dry that the big puddle they were in had all dried up. We all felt bad, as if we should have some how saved them. Something I think a lot about in terms of unschooling is flow. I love that when we get into a project we have the time and space to keep working at it. Flow is a state of mind in which a person becomes fully immersed in an activity (VeryWellMind, 2021). One of my frustrations with the school system is the stop/ start nature of lessons. From home educating I observed that my kids naturally learning in big surges dedicated to one subject at a time. They become totally absorbed, almost addicted to the subject area and then suddenly leave it. These waves of natural learning follow my own states as an adult. I have areas of obsessions for short periods then suddenly not interested at all. Allowing this state of natural flow encourages a deep love of learning. What was your last obsession? Have you ever bought a new controller for an Xbox (or any other game console) and found it doesnโt work? Cause thatโs what Fred and Ellie thought theyโd done โ until they learned that itโs not a games controller at all. Do you like to read outside? ๐ฒ I like to read in the garden, especially at night when the sunโs going down. ๐ฒ We went on a nature walk yesterday and I couldnโt resist taking a book with me. ๐ฒ This is one Iโm reading for my home education at the moment. My mum sets me a book every time I finish my last home education book (though usually around one a month. I can a quick reader though.) The last one was Charlotteโs Web (which I still need to get round to reviewing. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are books that youโve probably heard of before, but for those who havenโt, hereโs a quick run down of what they are like. ๐ง Written by Jeff Kinney, they are a series of books written like the diary of Greg Heffley. Greg is a young boy who is always getting into trouble and causing mischief. Heโs actually an antihero because heโs not very heroic or particularly good, but heโs not wholly bad either. You root for him and want him to do better, but he always seems to fall short. This means that the stories are always a lot more funny than a lot of other books. ๐ง Whenever I attended Cubs (Beavers before that), when we went shopping or just out for the day, if we would pass a store I would get another (or two) of these books & within just a few weeks Iโd read the first ten! As the others were released, I always tried to get them on release day. ๐ง I give them ๐๐๐๐๐ & I would recommend them to any kids aged 7 and up who are looking for a really really funny series. Theyโre not difficult to read and have cartoon-type picture throughout that are hilarious! ๐ง For my one of my next reviews, Iโll either be doing Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard (the sequel to Peter Nimble) by Jonathan Auxier or A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (the prequel to The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins โ well, once Iโve read them! How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers โญ๏ธ I used to fall asleep with this book when I was little and now look whoโs just done the same ๐ โญ๏ธ Even though it may seem like it, How to Catch a Star is not the worldโs worst rocket manual โ in fact, it doesnโt teach you how to fly a rocket at all haha! Though apparently the little boy in the story managed to fly his to the moon but he ran out of fuel ๐๐ โญ๏ธ This is a great childrenโs book for toddlers and I loved it when I was little. My whole family did. Itโs one of my parentโs favourite books they remember reading to me. โThe Land of Roarโ by Jenny McLachlan ๐ When Rose & Arthur were little, they loved to visit their imaginary world โ a world called โRoarโ. Little did they know that this world was real. Now older, itโs time for them to take a trip โ a real one โ into the world they created. The world of โRoarโ. ๐ This is a great book! The pictures throughout (by Ben Mantle) are a real treat, except for the ones with the villain in (he genuinely terrifies me!) The story is sweet, funny, exciting (and a little bit scary ๐) and Iโd recommend to anyone who loved the Nevermoor books. I was going to write all these books names down, but itโs super late and there are twelve of them and my mum and dad are making me go to bed ๐คช ๐ฉฒ When mum got them for me, we intended to read them straightaway but I didnโt really like the look of them, so I read something else instead. A couple years later I had run out books to read and went to reread some Roald Dahl, but I remembered these and decided to give them a go. They kept me entertained for a month or two until I got the final two books for one of the birthdays. ๐ฉฒ The captain underpants series is great for ages 6 or 7 +. Number 9 is my favourite. Itโs really funny. In fight they all are. I think I read the first 2 in a single night. ๐ฉฒ ๐๐๐๐ 4 stars today because I didnโt think 1, 6 and 7 were that great and bring the series down a peg (or star), but I know the writer was trying their best and you should definitely check these out. The rest are hysterical. Word of warning, one character uses the same type of language as Ron from Harry Potter. Nothing awful though. & not everyone makes it. (I will get around to Harry Potter one of these days, but there are just so many amazing books out there! Their family is cursed and when they leave home they only have a day to return home with the help of 3 magical items. They have to break the curse, or die... โฑ A Pinch of Magic is a fantastic novel and is quite literally spellbinding. A little dark in places but still great. Not everyone makes it, so keep that in mind if youโre thinking of letting younger kids read it. Today we got to have some family over for the first time in 4 months โ my auntie and uncle and cousin. It was so great seeing them in person. Theyโre the first real life people Iโve seen in a while (minus my actually family who I live with haha). These books are the Nevermoor Series! โ The third is being released in October, but letโs talk about the ones that are already out! โ Before you ask, no, Lego does not have anything to do with these books. I just figured Iโd try to make the main character, Morrigan Crow. I stole Hagridโs umbrella from my Hogwarts Great Hall set, so I need to give it back (do Lego umbrellas exist?) โ Morrigan Crow is cursed to die on her eleventh birthday. But, at the stroke of midnight, before the darkness can catch her, Morrigan is rescued by a man called Jupiter North & taken to the secret city of Nevermoor. She is invited to join the Wundrous Society, but only if she can pass four tricky trials using magic...which she doesnโt have. โ๏ธ These books are perfect for Harry Potter fans and for those who love high adventure & magical stories. I got this book yesterday. I finished it today. ๐ The Boy at the Back of the Class. Itโs amazing. ๐ It is about a refugee boy who is sent to live in the UK. You see things unfolding from the perspective of a 9yo kid. You never learn who they are or their name until the very end, but up until then I felt like it was a boy. Maybe thatโs because Iโm a boy? Maybe the author wanted the person reading the book to feel more connected to the story so doesnโt tell you on purpose? I wonโt spoil who the narrator is for you... ๐ You learn that the boy at the back of the class is called Ahmet and heโs from Syria and that he ran away from a war. The kid and his/her friends (Josie, Michael and Tom) come up with a plan to help him find his family. ๐ This book is really funny, is about friendship and being kind and teaches you how to treat other people. It helped me to learn about Syria a little and the war happening which I didnโt know much about before but I think itโs really important that we know about it. ๐ I absolutely loved it and I am going to ask my parents if they could get me The Star Outside My Window next (which is by the same author). ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ (I know I know, but itโs amazing and I canโt help it that all the books Iโve been reading are amazing.
