A sleepy, minty blob of a frog! ⠀ It's been chaotic here but we've since welcomed a leachie, Mourning geckos and a red eyed tree frog to the reptile room. Who would have thought that going to the Doncaster show would have resulted in such a thing? 😂😅 ⠀ I've also found a bunch more eggs in a hunt around the Madagascar Giant Day Gecko tank. I've popped them into the incubator, so hopefully we'll have even more babies on the way! Hopefully the Koch's Giant Day Gecko babies will be ready soon too. 😊

I'm not in my office. I write, sitting in a field surrounded by the most gorgeous clovers you'll ever see. The whippets are running circles around me, stretching their whole bodies out as they gallop. There's something so beautiful about watching a sighthound run. So quickly they grow from leggy balls of discoordination to this fluidity of beauty. ⠀ This was going to be a post about my office but today my office is outside. To be fair, my office is my little haven of animals and plants so it's not too far away from today! 😂 ⠀ I've been working hard on a few custom pieces that I can't show you as they're to be gifted. As well as that, I've been sketching away at the animals for the t-shirts and colouring book! Researching each animal to make sure I get the proportions right is taking most of my time up but my goodness- isn't mother nature amazing! ⠀ I'm thinking of introducing some of the cool animals here with a bit about them. All whippet puppies are taught one big thing. The first law of physics states that a whippet can take up any amount of space it desires. ⠀ For example, Ziggy can easily curl up on your lap. Equally, he can also take up the whole king-sized bed. ⠀ Now, Penny is a much smaller dog. She's a tiny wee thing. Yet, her Mum was Australian and I reckon Australian whippets are taught a different first rule. No matter how small you are, you MUST take up ALL the room. Or they'll send you to England where it rains a lot. ⠀ This means that little Penny easily takes up more room than good boy Ziggy. Be it full speed zoomies around the living room or taking your seat when you move, it ESPECIALLY means taking up all the room in the bed. How? I don't know. It's just science. ⠀ I drew this print when Ziggy was our only bed hogger. If I were to draw it again now, there wouldn't be much room for you and me! I'm not going to talk about my work today. It doesn't feel right. ⠀ There's a fine line between staying away from the news to protect your mental health as I try to do and being ignorant when fellow humans need help. ⠀ The situation in Afganistan is shocking. People fleeing for their lives under gunfire. The bravery of those staying behind. Strong women on hit lists, simply for being women. Girls as young as 12 are being told they'll be forced into marriage with Taliban fighters. ⠀ If you don't know what's happening, I implore you to find out and to be aware of what you can do to help. There are several wonderful accounts sharing information online, @simplepolitics being my go-to for unsensationalised, factual information. ⠀ I'm shocked and appalled that the UK is acting upon this crisis sooner, allowing refugees access to our shores. It often feels like we can't do much in the face of such big world issues but each of us has a voice and that voice is power. So many of us are privaliged. I am a white woman in the UK. This isn't a space to preach the problems that come with being a woman, disabled or LGBTQ+. Things are looking up! 🌞 ⠀ I'm finally feeling a bit better after being ill AND I've got two extra cuddly whippets after their walk on the beach yesterday. It couldn't get better than that unless it was #WonderfulWednesday! It is? Well in THAT case, here's five of the things that have made me happy in the last week! ⠀ 🐡 I had my second COVID-19 vaccination! After it getting delayed so long I'm really thankful to finally have it sorted. A country dropping restrictions is a scary place to be when you're chronically ill. ⠀ 🐡 I've been feeling better after last weeks sickness. Thank goodness! I spent the week curled up and have been hankering to get back to drawing my new project. 😍 ⠀ 🐡 PUFFERFISH! They've moved in to the tank on my desk and are pretty darn cool! They're pea pufferfish, a tiny species of freshwater puffer. I've had so many messages about them and am always happy to chat. They're getting to be a specialist subject for me! 😂 ⠀ 🐡 A windy trip for a walk on an empty beach. The dogs LOVED it and it was really good to be out by the sea. ⠀ 🐡 Cuddles with the whippets, eating asparagus and pink peppercorn ravioli. Working from home means I get to eat my lunch with Ziggy and Penny in the garden. it's one of my favourite times of day. I found the pasta in the veggie/gluten free bit of Tesco and goodness it's yummy! ⠀ What about you? Is there something that's made you happy this last week? I literally do a visual once over of all my plants every morning before work. Well on this day I just noticed that Flash wasn’t looking his best. Since I’d seen spider mites on other plants I have, I decided to check just in case. At first I was like “no way it can be pests” because I’ve used a systemic pesticide on most of my indoor plants. What I learned is that these bastards grow immunity and mutate so the pesticides became useless. • • I had to give Flash a power shower and wipe him down with my neem oil concoction. He’s now in isolation recovering from these dusty pieces of shit. I hate these GD spidermites... that’s why I’m cussing so much🤣🤣🤣 • • Apparently they can also go dormant over winter and pop back up when it warms up. They like warm, dry environments and they like to assemble on the undersides of leaves & in the crevices between the stems and petioles. That’s extremely petty of them, but guess who got the last laugh 😈😂. • • Do spider mites give you anxiety too? Some of you are real pilea masters, but I have never been one😅. In the beginning I really struggled with these ones. After I put them in a terracotta pot, she was much happier 😊 Then I gave them more light to recover, but the new leaves were a bit small. So now they are in a spot with less direct sunlight and the leaves are getting bigger again. Now I'm going to water them more thoroughly. Hoping for small ones this year! I made a mistake. ⠀ As today is #NationalHonestyDay, I thought I'd share this with you all. ⠀ Starting a new business requires people to know about you, Strong branding. Putting yourself out there. When I started, it took me far too long to design myself some business cards. Sounds daft but being an artist, my business is very visual and I didn't even settle on a proper colour scheme for far too long! ⠀ Do you know when you have something important on your to-do list but you just keep putting it off? That was me! 😂 It may not seem like a big mistake but it sure felt like one at the time. ⠀ To be fair, I absolutely love the business cards I have now. If I'd made and ordered some earlier, they wouldn't have been anything like this! It wasn't until my friend Lucy @leaflanestudio lent me her branding book by @thebrandstylist that I finally formalised what I wanted to create. ⠀ This was the result. Whippets, plants and OH SO GREEN! 😍 They're all printed on premium recycled paper materials and I love them. The paper's uncoated making them perfect for recycling into new things, but the ink used still gives them a gorgeous shine as if they were. Meet the new squad! I love seeing more expensive plants, but I tend to go for the "basic" ones, I think they are pretty and they are more budget friendly for me. Just out of couriousity, are you more of a "rare" or "basic" plant lover? . These lovely babies get a group photo before going into quarantine. 🌿🌧 Rainwater 🌧🌿 It’s been pouring all week here in Sydney so I’m reusing an old photo from my previous apartment today. But back to the topic of rain. While you want to wish it away, did you know how much your houseplants luuuurve a delicious drink of rainwater? Rainwater is free from the elements commonly found in the tap variety. While any water is 100% better than no water, tap water can lead to sediment build up. It’s rich in nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen, the big three that promote glossier leaves; not only will your plants look better, they’ll feel better too, as a good drenching decreases your soil’s PH and unlocks vital nutrients. It’s also fab for washing dust and pests that may be hiding amongst the leaves! My top tips on making the best use of rainwater: 🌧 If you are putting your indoor plants outside to catch some rain, keep ‘em in the shade. Rainy weather often brings wind; as most indoor plants are used to shaded spots, they’re not strong enough to stand up to big gusts of wind 🌧 Let them get a good soak, the whole way through the soil and all over their leaves 🌧 Keep an eye on your green babies while they’re outside. Watch out for patches of sunshine and keep them out of direct sunlight. Plants can burn in minutes! I’ve chatted to many of you who have put plants out in the rain and forgotten them/gone out/left them in someone else’s care, and then later found their plants burned black from the sun. So put a reminder on your phone to check them regularly as the rain may stop and the skies can clear very quickly 🌧 If you can’t put your plants outside, grab some buckets or any container really to collect rainwater to use later, and use that to water your plants instead of tap water 🌧 After a big drenching, ensure each pot is adequately drained afterwards. Tip the pot to the side; this will release more water from the soil.
