Earlier this week I had the exciting chance to present my undergraduate research project at uni to a group of bioscience peers and mentors! It was great to share my little pitch about what I've been working on over the last semester, and tell others what we can learn about plant development and genetics from little unassuming green blobs called Marchantia. At the moment I'm working on my final report for this project, and once that's done, I will have completed my BSc! After 4.5 years It doesn't quite feel real yet, but I'll be travelling interstate for a conference and launching into an honours project just a few weeks later. I thought to start posting some cool pics from my work with the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. More on the microscopic scale, but therefore not accessible to most people. These are from a mutant I made, showing the sporophyte and close up of the capsule wall, showing spiral secondary wall thickenings. The inside is filled with thousands of spores for dispersal. These are counter-stained with Ruthenium Red and Toluidine Blue. No filter nor photoshop! Dies sind mikroskopische Bilder einer meiner Marchantia polymorpha Mutanten. Es handelt sich um Längschnitte des Sporophyten des Brunnenlebermosses (das gelbe Gewebe im letzten Bild). In der Nahaufnahme kann man in der zweiten Schicht spiralformige Zellwandverdickungen erkennen und die Abertausenden Sporen die der Verbreitung dienen. Oxychilus navarricus [Bourguignat] La primera entrega de esta saga iba sobre una hepática con celdas y poros, y dije algo así como que había otras hepáticas más MTV (musgo de toda la vida). Lo que está babeando este grisáceo caracol es un tapiz de briófitos, entre los que se aprecian algunas hojitas de una hepática de las del otro grupo, de las que no tienen hexágonos y poros; en este caso Plagiochila asplenioides. Menudo tostón de cuenta, me voy. Esta segunda entrega de la trilogía superhúmeda va de un caracol de los conocidos vulgarmente como “Caracoles de cristal”; los Oxychílidos. Estos bichos de cuerpos grisáceos o azulados cuentan con una concha brillante, algo aplanada y translúcida, por lo que podemos ver en acción a las distintas vísceras del animal. Pero si eres un pequeño invertebrado de unos pocos milímetros no te empanes mirándole al bicho sus vergüenzas, ya que es carnívoro y no dudará en engullirte al ritmo que le permita su rádula (lengua rasposa de los caracoles). Lo de “navarricus” ni lo cuento, que incluso un colémbolo paucineuronado podría deducir de donde le viene. Pero para diferenciarlo de otras especies de Oxychilus es necesario ver la forma y altura de su concha y comprobar que tiene las suturas ligeramente marginadas en blanco. La trilogía acabará con el terror de esta especie; un ser marciano que si fuese de talla humana muchos no saldríamos de casa, aunque viviese en otro continente... Empezamos mal. Voy a intentar arreglar esta carencia aprovechando este otoño pasado por agua, momento en el que estos seres se empapan abundantemente para conseguir cerrar sus ciclos vitales como llevan haciendo desde hace más de 500 millones de años. La protagonista de hoy va a ser una hepática común en la húmeda Europa, que crece siempre en las más oscuras sombras del bosque... Suele vivir tapizando la tierra, rocas e incluso las partes bajas de algunos árboles. Siempre en sitios de muchísima humedad. En nuestras latitudes, las hepáticas se dividen principalmente en dos grandes grupos: Marchantiopsida y Jungermanniopsida. Las primeras son más escasas y tienen los talos divididos en celdas hexagonales culminadas en un poro central, mientras que las segundas son más parecidas a los “musgos de toda la vida”, estando casi de manera ubicua en multitud de ecosistemas. Si seguís por aquí, es probable que empiece a subir alguna próximamente... Esta publicación es la primera de una trilogía de seres que coexisten en ecosistemas muy húmedos... ¿Quién será el siguiente? Huge tropical plants with big leaves and gorgeous flowers @bhambotanicalgardens. Meanwhile I got a bit obsessed with the beauty of these magical mini worlds of liverwort. The little umbrellas are reproductive structures, which was news to me. Liverwort is an ancient plant that was there long before flowers. It's also the kind of stuff that makes stone pavers slippery and that we wash off planters after a wet winter. You definitely don't need to go to a tropical glasshouse to see it. Минуле літо було дуже посушливе, а цьогоріч дощі не вщухають. В мене таке враження, що літо тривало лише 2 тижні. Я звикла, що літо, це багато сонця і жара. Проте, в дощах теж є свій +. Рослини витинаються з кожної щілини, а ще має бути багато грибів. Здається, що Вольфсбург - це один великий заповідник: дикі кролики бігають прямо в центрі міста по газонах, хижі птахи вирують в кожному районі, цікаві комахи, дикі орхідеї прямо на стежках у парку...Минулого тижня мій погляд зачепила Маршанція поліморфна, раніше її небуло, а тепер - дуже багато.
