#FunExperimentsandDIYScience with DIY #PlantTerrarium Follow these steps! 1. Start by adding a layer of gravel or small pebbles to the bottom of your glass container. This will help with drainage. 2. Next, add a thin layer of activated charcoal on top of the gravel. The charcoal helps filter water and prevent odor. 3. Add a layer of potting soil on top of the charcoal, making sure it's deep enough for your plants' roots to grow. 4. Place your small plants carefully in the soil, arranging them as desired. 5. Add any decorative elements, such as small figurines or decorative stones, to enhance the terrarium's aesthetic. 6. Water your plants lightly, and place the terrarium in a location with indirect sunlight. 7. Monitor the moisture levels and water levels as needed to maintain a humid but not soggy environment. 8. Enjoy your DIY plant terrarium and watch your miniature garden thrive! #glasscontainer #pottingsoil #pebbles #activatedcharcoal #succulents #smallplants #plantcare #plantgoals #selfsustaining #ecosystems #greenery #diy #doityourself #creativity #plantstrong #innovation #plantbiology #nature #Experiment #experiments #sciencelovers #sciencefun #scienceexperiments #sciencenerd #sciencelab #Scienceisfun

💙Ipheion uniflorum💙 Today’s #sciart post is about #Ipheionuniflorum commonly known as #starflower The Spring Starflower is a flowering plant native to Argentina and Uruguay. Starflower is currently grown as an ornamental plant in many regions of Europe, Australia, and the United States 🌎 Ipheion uniflorum flowers each Spring for at least six weeks. Each flowering stem bears a single 6-pointed star-shaped flower. Its colors can range from white, blue, and violet ⭐️ 🧄 A fun fact about the Spring Starflower is that if the leaves are crushed, they emit a garlic-like odor! 🧄 Last but not least, I’d like to acknowledge that this post is very dear to me because it is heavily inspired by one of my current favorite romance fantasy series, The Lost God by @sheilareadsandwrites . Thank you so much Sheila for letting me be part of your ARC team, freeing me from a multi-year reading slump with your wonderful storytelling, and for helping me grow alongside the characters of your books. Hacks for Germinating Greenhouse Plant Seeds Part 2: How do seeds know it is the right time and place to germinate after spending a long time, perhaps years, in a state of suspended animation? Seeds remain dormant until they encounter the right conditions for the embryonic plant to grow into an adult plant. Most seeds break dormancy when water penetrates the seed coat and rehydrates the embryonic plant’s tissues. Depending on the species, seeds may need exposure to light, chemicals resembling an animal’s digestive system, tropical heat, or winter cold followed by warmth to germinate. In the case of tomatoes, squash, eggplant, and pepper seeds, contact with heat and moisture is essential to germination. I recommend placing these seeds in small containers lined with wet paper towel. The container should not be airtight, but it should be clean to prevent microbial contamination. Remember to label the containers since most tomato seeds look alike! The containers can be placed in a warm area, such as a hot water heater or airing cupboard. The lining needs to be kept moist with added water so the seeds do not dry out again. The containers should be checked daily for the emerging radicles, which look like white tails poking out of the seeds. At this stage, the seeds can be transferred to individual soil pots using tweezers. In my experience, 90% of seeds germinated with this technique develop into healthy plants. Happy planting! Vähän on kylmää luvattu. Esikasvatettavaakin on vielä lisää. Pitkä aika on tänä vuonna kasveilla odotella että pääsevät ulos 🌱🍃🤗 Me tästä lähdetään kirjastoon ja kaupungille hoitamaan asioita . Toivottavasti teillä on kivempaa säätä ☀️ Kivaa lauantaita ! Hacks for Germinating Greenhouse Plant Seeds Part 1: If you or anyone in your household uses makeup regularly, you've probably ended up with a hoard of used cosmetic compacts like the one I'm holding in this photo. Have you ever wondered what to do with all those used makeup compacts? I have a solution – use them as seed incubators to kickstart gardening this spring! Many of the popular kitchen garden plants crave heat. Tomatoes, beans, squash, and peppers originated in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas while eggplants likely evolved in tropical India. These plants’ sultry preferences can present a germination challenge in the chilly British spring weather. Not even a sunny windowsill can provide enough heat to stimulate germination in some cases. To crack the germination code, it is important to understand the biology of seeds. Seeds are the life-boats for plant embryos in suspended animation. Although they look inanimate, seeds are alive yet in a dormant state where cellular metabolism is slowed in an almost imperceptible pace. The embryonic plant consists of cotyledons (seed leaves), hypocotyl (immature stem), and radicle (embryonic root). The seed coat is the outer layer of the seed containing the embryonic plant. How do seeds "wake up" from their state of suspended animation? Find out in my next post! What’s this?! This mystery plant part comes from one of the fruit crops we grow here at EarthDance Organic Farm School. Can you guess what it is?  Make your guesses in the comments and we’ll reveal the answer in a post later this week!  Hint: it has an odd scent. ID: 1, cover slide for EarthDance’s “What’s This?” posts. “What’s this?” is written in orange text across the top inside of a green text box with a black border. A red/brown magnifying glass graphic is in the center of the slide. Through the magnifying glass is zoomed in view of a green leaf and there is a large brightly colored question mark centered on top of the leaf. The brown and green EarthDance logo is in the bottom left corner of the slide. This is all set against a cream background. 2, This slide is identical to the last except that the text says “let’s take a look” and the magnifying glass is larger and contains a different photo. The photo is an extreme close up of a plant part that is a dark reddish/purple/brown color. The texture of the plant part looks to be leathery like elephant or rhino skin. #WhatIsIt #WhatsThis #Closeup #ZoomedIn #Plants #Guess #Crops #GuessingGame #PlantIdentification #Scented #PlantBiology #OrganicFarming #TeachingFarm

😉 . . . #parasiticplants #orobanchaceae #plantbiology #botany #consultoriaambiental #medioambiente #islascanarias #conservación #consultoraambiental #ecosistemascanarios #serviciosambientales #plantasparasitas

Euphorbias Part 2 - How Can We Tell It's a Euphorbia? Plants of the family Euphorbiaceae are a motley crew of obscure and famous species that most plant lovers would never guess are related. So how can we tell if a plant is a member of this wildly diverse family? My late Dad and I had a joke about plant identification: “If you can’t figure out what it is, the plant’s probably a Euphorbia!”. As outré as Euphorbiaceae can be, they have important shared characteristics. All species have milky sap and flowers with a distinctive morphology. In many species, the sap and other parts of the plant is toxic. For example, the powerful poison ricin originates in Castor beans. All Euphorbiacea species share a distinctive flower type called a “cyanthium” - perfectly illustrated by the Wood Spurge. Modified leaves called a cyanthophyll form the “saucer” surrounding the stamens and pistils. The reproductive structures sits inside the involucre or “floral envelope”. The structures that resemble seed pods are bractioles and glands. Familiar cottage garden flowers may have very unexpected relatives in their plant family trees if you get curious! The plant in the photo is the Wood Spurge (Euphorbia amygdaloides, cultivar “Golden Glory”). #katia_plantscientist #botany #euphorbia #euphorbiaceae #greenplants #limegreen #plantidentification #plantbiology #latex #plants #weirdplants #biology #taxonomy #nature #euphorbiaamygdaloides #wildplants #cottagegarden #cottagegardenflowers #plantfacts

🌱💨 Did You Know? The smell of fresh-cut grass is a plant's cry for help! 🌾🚨 When you savor the fragrance of freshly mowed grass, you're experiencing a desperate plea. Plants can't escape threats, unlike animals, but they're far from defenseless. They employ many tactics, from thorns to dense, waxy leaves, and even engage in chemical warfare, showcasing their ingenious defense mechanisms! Texas A&M AgriLife Research has studied that this familiar aroma isn't just a distress call—it's a strategic move. The smell is caused by 'green leaf volatiles,' potent chemical signals that do double duty: • Defense Activation: They trigger the plant's defenses, producing proteins and metabolites to repel attackers or make themselves less tasty. • SOS to Allies: More fascinatingly, these volatiles summon parasitic wasps to keep plant-eating insects at bay! This dual-purpose mechanism is a sophisticated form of plant communication, echoing the science behind the human use of aspirin to modulate similar biochemical pathways. 🌿 So, next time you smell that fresh-cut lawn, remember: it's a silent scream for protection and an open invitation for reinforcements from nature's pest control. #ScienceSaturday #PlantBiology #EcoFacts #NatureIsAmazing #CCMGA #WeGrowGardners

🌼🌱🌼🌱🌼🌱🌼🌱 What effect does boron deficiency have on rapeseed and related plants? 🌼🌱 Prof. Patrick Bienert from the Chair of Plant Physiology and his team shed more light on this topic. Boron deficiency has devastating effects on rapeseed and similar plants. Nevertheless, little is known about the underlying genetic mechanisms. The study shows that the response to persistent or acute short-term boron deficiency is similar to that to pests and infections. The results lay the foundation for breeding plants that can better cope with boron deficiency and for preventing yield losses caused by boron deficiency. Read the full article on our website. The Herbarium is full of interesting specimens that can serve many purposes… just like how hemp can be used in multiple different ways. Hemp fibre is similar to linen and can be used within the textile industry, paper production, and more. Additionally, hemp seeds are edible and can be used to blend into a smoothie, top salads, or for homemade muffins. Herbarium specimens, like these cannabis specimens, not only showcase the importance of plant biodiversity but also what plants provide for our industries. We hope everyone can appreciate the many uses of hemp tomorrow and enjoy the weekend sun! #herbarium #ugaherbarium #plantbiology #ugaplantbio #ugaplantbiology #hemp #hempbotany #plants #plant

Congratulations to our grad student, Mark Mullinger, for being awarded the California Native Grassland Association (CNGA) -Grassland Research Awards for Student Scholarship (GRASS) @californianativegrasslands. Mark’s project focuses on evolutionary relationships among Melica species. Melica has been recognized as a model species in grasses due to factors such as relatively fast generation time, perenniality, and interesting variation in physiology and morphology. Perenniality is particularly an important trait of grass crops that facilitates sustainable farming. The grant supports students working on California native grasses and grasslands, with California being a hub of diversity for Melica, housing approximately half of all North American Melica species. Mark’s research involves building a phylogeny to explore the evolutionary relationships among Melica species, providing a foundation for future studies. This includes investigating belowground trait diversity such as rhizomes, bulbs, and corms, with all six corm-forming species located in the region. Mark will use the grant funds to conduct fieldwork in California during the summer to further his research.🌾 . . . . . . #UVMPlantBiology #UVMPlantBio #PlantBiology #STEM #Botany #Biology #Evolution #Ecology #Grass #PlantScience #Melica #Plants #Nativeplants #Science #Ecosysteme #California

Is that an octopus tentacle with suckers? No, it’s a plant! The Wood Spurge (Euphorbia amygdaloides, cultivar “Golden Glory”) is one of the more bizarre looking cottage garden plants, which is unsurprising since it belongs to a plant family full of species that push the botanical boundaries. The Wood Spurge is a busy evergreen native plant of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, where it grows in woodland habitats. It is believed to be a native species in the UK, naturally occurring in woodlands in Southern England. The Euphorbiacea, or Spurge family, is notorious as one of the diverse plant families as well as one of the largest, with over 7500 known species found on all continents except Antarctica. This family includes economically important species such as the Rubber Tree (Hevea brasiliensis), Candellila (Euphorbia antisyphilitica), Castor Bean (Ricinus communis), and Cassava (Manihot esculenta) as well as popular ornamental plants like Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum), and colourful species in the Jatropha genus. Many of the desert-adapted species such as Canary Island Spurge (Euphorbia canariensis) uncannily resembles a cactus due to convergent evolution. If Euphorbia are so wildly diverse, how do botanists decide a plant belongs to this family? Join me next time to find out. #katia_plantscientist #botany #plantbiology #plantscience #plantfacts #biology #taxonomy #green #limegreen #acidgreen #euphorbia #euphorbiaamygdaloides #wildplants #plants #weirdplants #plantidentifier #plantidentification
