Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) is an ancient plant that has been with us since the dinosaurs. It's also known by the name shavegrass. You can often find it in clear-cuts and gravel pits. Ruled by Saturn, it grows in two phases--first the beige spore stalks, then the sterile bottle brush leaves. I tincture the spore stalks, and dry the bottle brushes when they are about an inch in diameter for tea. Horsetail is known for its affinity for the skin, joints, and urinary tract system. It can be used in a hair wash, and formulated into tooth powders and nail treatments. MOSS appreciation post!! 💚💚💚 Isn’t it pretty! 🥰 but also moss is incredible, tough & prehistoric! It is an ancient plant. They date back to over 450 million years ago! There could be up to 25000 different species around the world. They don’t have any roots & absorb nutrients & water from the air. They do have ‘Rhizoids’ which allows them to anchor onto rocks, trees or plants. Mosses produce spores. They have no flowers & are part of the Bryophyta family. They are super tough & found around the world in extreme conditions where nothing else grows. Apparently some mosses can withstand a temperature of 100 degrees C (when dried out) and a low of -272 degrees C !!! Wow. They are essential for biodiversity. For example Sphagnum moss is part of peat bog creation. Many creatures eat, live or reproduce in moss. Mosses will soak up water & acts like a sponge. Horsetail, horsetail family: I saw the leaves yesterday, but missed their strobili, from which, round tail-like, spores spread before the leaves grow. The size of the plant there was just like the ones seen in Japan. The young strobili are traditionally foraged and cooked. (But I didn’t like the bitterness though). Found in my camera roll while scrolling: a bowl of figs from my mother's garden. The tree is old, much climbed by children of various generations, and its gnarled branches once supported a cubbyhouse. I think it was planted by my grandfather, a survivor of the First World War. He made fig jam in the old kitchen. Later, my mother took over the jam making, and now it's my brother who visits with fresh figs and pots of jam. It made me remember that in a collection of Colette’s nonfiction writing, Earthly Paradise, which I particularly love, Colette's mother Sido writes to her daughter: ‘I can see, my dearest, that you are haunted by the old house and its garden. This naturally gives me great pleasure, but it also makes me a little sad.’ Is there one of us that is not a little haunted by a particular house, or by a certain garden at a certain hour? The Silphium plant is a Libyan wild plant whose original and only homeland is present-day Libya. It was a plant that had a wondrous ability to treat incurable diseases and was used as a spice, disinfectant, and antiseptic. It was valued more than gold and money, especially during the reign of the Greeks and Berbers in the society of Cyrene and its environs. It has a long stem with leaves on its sides, distinguished by a flower at the top Silphium was printed on Cyrene coins as a national identity for that era, as it carried a great honorary character and identity for that era, as the silphium plant formed the basis of trade in the city, and the plant was essential to its thriving economy, so its fame contributed to the emergence of an economic movement in the Cyrenean ports... Studies say that the plant has become extinct due to poor harvest from Libyan farmers. Due to the high demand for it, residents used to give it as taxes or to buy their needs instead of money... Here are ancient Libyan coins minted between 400 and 300 BC.
