Did anyone watch the Madrid Open this weekend? I watched parts, and both men’s and women’s seemed like great matches🎾 🎧I started listening to All In - Billie Jean King’s autobiography - a few days ago and I’m absolutely obsessed. Thanks to one of my booksta besties @mylitlifewithlita for the recommendation! 💻Sorry I’ve been kind of MIA here - some volunteer groups I’m in for work have been crazy lately and are taking up more time than usual. This week / weekend is also busy with life, but hoping to be back to normal with posting next week! Hope everyone’s week is starting out well!! 🤞🏼 #tennisbooks #billiejeanking #sportsbooks #sportsmemoirs #autobiographies #memoirs #madridopen #tennislover #andreagassi #carriesotoisback #taylorjenkinsreid

Funny celeb memoir You’ll want to read this if: -you love Star Wars -you love celebrity memoirs, especially as audiobooks. Don’t come for me, but… I was never a Star Wars fan 🫣. I wouldn’t say I’m a fan now either, but I have a 3 year old with a love of Darth Vader that makes it impossible for me to stay ignorant of the galactic conflict that has most everyone’s heart. So, I’m probably the last to know this, but Carrie Fisher was a funny lady! I knew nothing about Fisher besides the fact that she played the iconic Princess Leia and has since passed. This short memoir, published in 2008, delivers on the juicy stuff (her drug use while on the set of Star Wars, waking up next to her dead friend, her “inbred” Hollywood family) while also debriefing on her ongoing journey with sobriety and bipolar disorder. Theres really no dull moment here. And with Fisher doing an excellent job narrating, this would make for a great road trip/work commute listen, whether you’re a Star Wars devotee or not. #carriefisher #audiobooks #wishfuldrinking #princessleia #backlistbooks #starwars #celebmemoirs #memoirs #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #booksofig #booksofinstagram

📚BOOK REVIEW📚 I’ve been reading some non-fiction in between my regular reads to get a feel for how I want to structure my Type 1 book. Since there is not really anything out there for parents who have a child with it, we have the opportunity to really make something all-encompassing! First I read Bright Spots & Landmines - a helpful book for adults, tips in managing Type 1 (and Type 2). Much of which we already know at this point, but I liked the clear and concise tips and strategies he included. Then, I read Behind Closed Doors - which is a mother’s guide (basically) to keeping communication open with your teen. (More of a religious-based feel but still interesting topics) Then, I landed on Bloom by @etst . A mom I’ve follow for a couple of years and gained a lot of “hold on and enjoy the little things” moments. She has a daughter born with Down syndrome and wrote a memoir about her experience and how she got through that first year. All 3 of these have given me so much insight in what I want my book to be. So much of what Kelle spoke about are also feelings I felt, grief I experienced and support I received. It’s hard to explain how much you hurt when your child’s life isn’t what you expected it to be. She learned right away, I had 5 years of “normal” before it was taken away…but I think it doesn’t matter when the moment happens, you will have the same flood of emotions and stages to trudge through. I thank this mama for her candor and appreciate seeing now how far they’ve come as a family. I would recommend this book regardless if your child has a disability or not, because any mom can relate to that kind of love and dedication to your children. #readmore #amreading #bookstagram #memoirs #bloom #research

"The desert is full of raw life lessons. I think the biggest lessons are adaptability and resilience." . Talking About Books interviewed Shugri Said Salh about her book, The Last Nomad; growing up with her nomad grandmother in the Somali desert; and poetry in Somalia. . Shugri herded goats and sheep as seven-year-old child, and shares stories of her ayeeyo, her grandmother, who was a strong, independent woman. . Shugri talks about how the desert taught her lessons that helped her in her adult life, when she had to flee the civil war in Somalia and move to North America which was a completely strange world to her. . She also tells us about the important role of poetry in Somalia, where it is a form of communication and of recording history, and recommends some Somali poets. . I had a reunion with a friend of 26 years over the weekend. It felt like a blink of a moment and was wholly wonderful all the same. I don’t remotely recognize the person I was when our friendship began, and we have a trove of stories and shenanigans for the books between us, yet somehow as life happens, as we’ve changed entirely and outgrown old versions of ourselves, as we’ve carved paths on very different trails, we can still meet and see the true essence of one another without holding onto what was yet simultaneously remembering it all with warmth and much laughter just the same. What a gift such friendships are- it’s no wonder that they are rare. I had to scribble it all down to commemorate the little details that stood out and while I was at it I splashed some roses in watercolor because the blooms have all started to open. What about you? What did you get into over the weekend?

📚 #BrokenHorses by @brandicarlile - I’m a huge fan of Brandi Carlile’s music, but this is a book I’d recommend to anyone, whether or not you listen to her. It’s full of beautiful, thoughtful writing about family, identity, faith, music, and activism. One of my favorite parts of this book was how beautifully Brandi describes her experiences of becoming a mother, the confusion she felt as the non-pregnant parent, and the importance queer-affirming birth workers and educators. I’d recommend this book to anyone (especially the audiobook version since it includes so many songs!) and I think queer parents will get something special from it.

The architect’s autobiography is full of very interesting write-ups from his childhood, his years at Karachi Grammar School, and later at METU, in Turkey for his architectural studies. His travels in Europe as a student (on a ‘starvation’ budget), his work in a factory in Frankfurt, Germany as a labourer after completing his Masters in Architecture, coming home to Karachi, getting a job, meeting his wife, raising two children, his work at NESPAK as chief architect of the Jinnah Terminal Airport project for almost a decade, and much more. Karachi - then and now - is a fascinating read too. Happy Mother’s Day “In loving memory of Francesca, My mother, a woman whose strength knew no bounds. Despite facing the challenges of her time and enduring personal hardships, she stood resilient, a beacon of courage and grace. Her journey intertwined with difficult circumstances, yet she navigated them with determination and unwavering love for her family. Francesca’s devotion was unmistakable, especially in her role as a nurturing grandmother, providing unconditional love ,support and care during times of adversity in our family’s life. Her legacy is one of endurance and selflessness, a testament to her unwavering spirit and boundless love. Though imperfect like us all, her strength to weather storms and her capacity for love leave an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing her. Francesca’s memory lives on with myself, her grandson and granddaughter. She stood as a guiding light of resilience and love that continues to inspire. Francesca was a woman beyond her time, just want to say “thank you”. #portraitmemoirs #memoirwriting #memoirs#womenwriters#WomenAuthors #FemaleWriters #WomenEmpowerment#womenwhowrite #AmWritting #writerslife#authorsofinstagram#ReadersOfInstagram #Reading #MentalHealth#writersofig #Mom #HappyMother’sDay #InMemoryOfYou #Grandmother #Love #Devotion #AWomanBeforeHerTime #WeMissYou #beautiful

💌 Throughout while reading the book, I was trying to understand the title of it, what could it possibly mean and does it relate to neurology, and I finally understood it at the end of the book when Paul took his final breath. I have always wondered how doctors view death, or mortality. Especially surgeons, considering they literally have the power of life in their hands. Dancing with death on almost weekly, if not daily basis, have doctors made peace with dying ? Does that make them less scared or more certain of whatever is beyond the veil? I did not find myself crying while reading this book- contrary to what several reviews and people said. Instead, I discovered a very interesting perspective on mortality, death and literature from a neurosurgeon. Not crying while reading a memoir, especially of cancer, seems a bit stone-hearted but hear me out. What Paul writes about is not what I have read in other memoirs- at least up to some extent. He unfolds his thoughts, his confusions, his mistakes and his learnings in a way that made me more curious than emotional. A lot of what he has mused over is something that will linger on with me- and not just about life and death. I liked the bits where literature was infused- Samuel Beckett and T.S. Eliot make a few appearances and the influence of literature also jumps out in Paul's writing at certain instances. Finally, there is one bit that stands out- during his life, Paul learnt, learnt and learnt; he learnt about literature, about medicine and he learnt how to be a neurosurgeon. Finally, when it was time for him to graduate, step out of operating room and live, he had to learn to die. I would also suggest reading the epilogue by Lucy, Paul's wife- she has written wonderfully about a few moments with her husband and her writing holds a lot of emotion in it. It also rounds off the book with her personal touch- another favourite bit of mine. I would suggest this book, especially to those who are interested in neurology and discourses around death, life and literature. And no, one does not need to know neurology to read the book.

Negotiation is also the key to business success. No organization can survive without contracts that produce profits. At a strategic level, businesses are concerned with value creation and achieving competitive advantage. But the success of high-level business strategies depends on contracts made with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders. Contracting capability—the ability to negotiate and perform successful contracts—is the most important function in any organization. This book is designed to help you achieve success in your personal negotiations and in your business transactions. The book is unique in two ways. First, the book not only covers negotiation concepts, but also provides practical actions you can take in future negotiations. This includes a Negotiation Planning Checklist and a completed example of the checklist for your use in future negotiations. "Results That Last is long overdue and fills a big gap in effective business management. There are legions of books that show us the way to achieve successful results in business, but very few that teach us how to institutionalize success. In reality, achieving success is the easy part. The real challenge is to achieve results that last. Quint Studer not only proves it is possible to hardwire a culture for lasting results, but lays out a simple, logical, and effective way to do so. Anyone who wants to make success a habit needs to read this book." I've been neglecting reviewing Here After by Amy Lin for the past fifteen days, and honestly, I still don't know where to begin. Lin's memoir is utterly heartbreaking. An unfathomable amount of honesty and devastation is ever-present as we witness Lin’s world crumpling around her. The strength it would have taken her to write about this horrific loss initially is insurmountable - let alone having to rehash everything yet again while this book was created. Lin also narrates this audiobook, and I have never heard anything that is more intimate. It was incredibly powerful and heart-wrenching to listen to the rawness in her voice as the emotions ran through her while she relived her memories. All I can hope for is that this book finds its way into the hands of those who could truly benefit from reading it. What's the most heartbreaking book you've ever read? Thank you NetGalley, Zibby Books and Libro.fm for the complimentary copies to read and review.

MEMOIRS, cartoon by Roz Chast. 📚 The story of our lives unfolds differently for each one of us. 📚 No need to compare them, though we do! 📚 After I viewed this cartoon, the immensely wise book "Appreciate Your Life" by Zen master Taizan Maezumi came into mind. 📚 The teachings presented in it offer insight into non-self, unity among all phenomena, non-attachment, fearlessness and gratitude. 📚 So please know that your one life is precious in the relative and absolute sense. 📚 Be it. Appreciate it. RISE to it. Here and Now. And SMILE! ⭕ #femalecartoonists #memoirs #humor #bookshelves #zenteachings #beherenow #knowthyself #rozchast

The Pixie Series children's books offer an opportunity to discuss complex issues with kids of all ages. Pixie and the Bees and Pixie and the Fox are based on my own life. Writing them down helped me make sense of my jumbled up and heavy feelings. And by writing them as fables I am able to provide a bit of distance between myself and the experiences. It also makes the stories accessible to readers of all ages. Both are currently available on my website, although Pixie and the Fox will officially be released on Friday May 10th. New photos from source: 56/P vs RPG Memoir and photos shared with me by former MEDEVAC pilot CW2 Mitch Wiese @flieger45 June 2011 - We flew MEDEVAC landing at the point of injury (POI). A foe shot a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) at the aircraft and it penetrated the plexiglass window in the picture. That day we had a doctor onboard whom was leaning over the patient assessing injuries. The rocket hit him in the back corner of the [HGU-56/P] helmet. We’re pretty sure it changed the direction of it enough to glance off the back wall and go through the sheet metal of the door, exited the aircraft and exploded. Doc was knocked unconscious and came to shortly after. He suffered from a TBI with some residual effects. #warstories #memoirs #survivalist #survivalgear #helicopterpilot #medevac #gentexhelmet #hgu56p #headprotection #RocketPropelledGrenade #gentex #helicopterhelmet #flighthelmet #gentex_aircrew #TBI #h60blackhawk #h60 #combatmedical #airwarriors #combatveteran #medec #flightdoc #crewchief #doorgunner #patient #airambulance #HEMS #closecall #pilotstories #woundedwarriors

When Editors didn’t differentiate between male and female team members ———— I was 26-years-old when our former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. I used to stay opposite Metro Cinema in South Mumbai and my mother was undergoing treatment at INHS Asvini, Colaba. Amidst that, one night we heard about the assassination. While we were still trying to grasp about the suicide bombing at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, my Editor Rahul Dev, who stayed in Colaba, drove to our home and rang the bell. He told my dad, “Uncle, I have come to take Vidyottama with me to the office”. I had returned some time ago from the hospital or the office, I do not recall clearly now. And my father told me, “Rosy, get ready. Rahulji has come. You must go to the office”. My fauji father understood. No questions asked. And in about five minutes we were out. Rahul ji told my father he would drop me home himself and my father told him, “I trust you beta. What is important is that she needs to be in the office right now”. That was that then. The news was so shocking that precautions were being taken to avoid any untoward incident in the country. So, many colleagues, who had gone home, could not return to work. Those who could, did from midway. But it was mostly we, who stayed in South Mumbai, who rushed to the office and worked till late into the night. We poured over every news feed that came in. First the mother (Smt. India Gandhi), and then the son. Two prime ministers were killed within seven years by separatists! There was no concept of DEI then, nor any campaign of women empowerment. Just conscientious Editors, who believed in the value their colleagues brought to the desk. We worked as colleagues & journalists. Not as men and women. That is why my experience that I narrated in my earlier post about a male colleague mocking me with: “Aur karo night shifts madam” has stayed with me so vividly. Sadanand Godbole, the late Satish Pednekar, Indra Kumar Jain were awesome seniors. part 1: 永遠的三毛/the everlasting Sanmao A. today we continue with another very famous chinese/taiwanese female writer, the late Ms 三毛陳平/Sanmao Echo Chen [1943-1991]. but before we proceed, a little crucial - and long-delayed - preamble [i wonder if other bilingual/bicultural writers are always so bogged down by the necessity to sketch out preconditions of larger Weltanschauung/worldview, before they can get going, or is this just an issue endemic to uncle max?] anyhow: the english term ‘Chinese’ [or ‘Chinois’ in french] is exceedingly vague and imprecise, as it does not make any distinction whether it’s used in a geopolitical, OR ethnic/cultural, sense. and this is especially unfortunate given the extremely regrettable situations prevailing in Mainland China, or The People’s Republic of China [PRC]. but one is much more subtle and accurate in the chinese language: we refer to citizens of PRC as ‘中國人‘, literally ‘China person’, or ‘大陸人’,the more familiar ‘Mainland Chinese’. these two designations are obviously geoPOLITICAL. for *ethnic* [and to a lesser extent, cultural] Chinese, we call them ‘華人‘,or ‘Hua person’. any native speakers of chinese will know automatically that one is talking about ethnicity and culture here, and will usually follow up with this question, ‘哪裡的華人?’, literally, ‘Hua person from where?’ it’s also generally understood that, if only ‘華人’/‘Hua person’ is used, then it’s most likely that he/she is *not* from PRC/Mainland China [otherwise they’d been directly referred as ‘中國人‘/‘China person’ or ‘大陸人’/‘Mainland chinese’]. and probably not from Taiwan either, particularly in these politically charged days, as one would have said immediately ‘台灣人‘/‘Taiwanese’.

In “Restless Dolly Maunder” Kate Grenville tells the imagined story of her maternal grandmother, Dolly Maunder. She was born in 1881 on a sheep farm in New South Wales and she loved school and admired the local young female student teacher: “She was the only woman Dolly knew who wasn’t just at home all day, banging the stove door open and closed, heaving the wet sheets around on washday. It was coming to Dolly slowly, like water seeping into sand: if you were born a girl that was the life you’d have to live. Unless you could find a way out.” At 14, Dolly is forced to leave school and starts work on the family farm, whipped by her domineering father if she doesn’t cook properly. She never stops looking for “a way out”, and this restlessness dominates her life. She accepts that marriage the only way out even if she knows that it is just another form of servitude for a woman of her class. Bert Russell, an old school peer, courts her with patient persistence. Even if she isn’t in love with him, she senses that he is a man who sees her potential and is not threatened by her intelligence. Bert turns out to be a terrible philanderer, and humiliates her in various occasions with his love affairs but she knows she can’t leave him without being ruined financially. She also appreciates his faith in her capacities and her business skills. They start a shop and gradually acquire more businesses: a boarding house, a pub, a grand hotel. He teaches Dolly to drive and she loves “the freedom to go” that comes with being able to “grab her handbag, put on her coat, get in the car and drive off”. This beautifully written account of Dolly reminds me of my grandmother and mother. My mother was forced to leave school at 11 even though she was highly intelligent and dreamt of pursuing her education. In this book Kate Grenville asks why Dolly was seen by her own daughter (Grenville’s mother) as such a “cold, dominating mother”. Were her dreams of becoming a teacher crushed by her father? Did this lead her to crush her own daughter’s artistic aspirations and force her into the business of pharmacy, which she hated? #womensprize #womensfiction @womensprize #mustreadbooks #bestbooks

“You have the choice this very moment- the only moment you have for certain. I hope you aren’t so wrapped up in nonessential stuff that you forget to really enjoy yourself because this moment is about to be over. I hope you’ll look back and remember today as the day you decided to make every one count, to relish each hour as if there would never be another. Ah, the nostalgia hit hard today as I walked past a familiar sight from my childhood summers: the magnificent Gulmohar trees in full bloom, painting the streets with their vibrant red flowers! As kids, collecting these fallen May flowers was our ultimate summer pastime. But let me tell you about the time when my friends and I got a little too enthusiastic about our flower-gathering mission. Picture this: armed with bags and determination, we set out on our quest. All was going well until... SPLAT! Yours truly ended up with a face full of flower petals after tripping over my own feet! But hey, amidst the laughter and stained shirts, those moments became cherished memories that I'll always hold dear. Here's to reliving the simple joys of childhood, one May flower at a time. #childhoodmemories #MayFlowers #gulmohar #childhood #memoirs

I think many of us are familiar with the outlines of Suleika Jaouad’s life especially since American Symphony was released on Netflix, and so many of us are fans of her talented husband Jon Batiste. I consumed American Symphony and became intrigued with Jaouad because of her tenacity; her determination feels very inspiring as I’ve been navigating health struggles in my family’s life. Between Two Kingdoms did not disappoint. Jaouad’s brutal honesty in the face of tragedy and the challenges of an interrupted life was just so refreshing. While we all deal with really hard things, there are just so few people who are willing to share their selfishness, bad feelings, or just how much all of this f@&king sucks. To more honesty. To more reality. Thank you SuSu. #bookstagram #suleikajaouad #memoirs #illnessmemoirs

I didn't plan it, but all the physical books I read in April were red❤️. I thoroughly enjoyed them all, but The Women was the easy favorite. It is a must-read.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Yours Truly was fabulous and has become my new favorite rom-com.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Listen For The Lie was entertaining, suspenseful fun with an interesting twist.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mama Love was a heart-rending tale of redemption.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ l also listened to Ward D by Frieda McFadden, which was creepy, twisty goodness.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I'm not picking a stack to read this month. I'm just going to keep picking up what my moody reader self feels called to😊! Very beautifully written, but it goes on and on. At one point I felt we were coming to a natural conclusion; I checked and I was only at 25% done. Much of this seemed like it could've stayed a journal entry. And apparently she already wrote a book about her divorce before this one??? How? Is it all the same material? And yet she repeatedly says she's not telling us everything, because it's a memoir not a tell-all, she's got to have some secrets or something. I can't imagine what she could be holding back, since everything is retold painstakingly. Maybe it's whatever happened that didn't make her ex look like a heartless villain, and her the saintly martyr mother? And everything is so precious. Every book, plate, street, etc. It must be exhausting to attach so much sentimentality to every little thing that makes up a normal life. Not everything has to be forever and ever. People move house and still get on with life. You'd survive moving to a different street. Your kids will turn out fine even if they don't live forever in the bedroom you painted yellow together before they were born. In fact, moving somewhere that doesn't have memories attached to every single thing would probably be helpful for letting go and moving on. It's giving Miss Havisham. The cento at the end was very cool, I admit. I don't care for poetry (adding random line breaks doesn't make something a poem!!) but the cento was a clever way to bring it all full circle and summarize the whole book. Helps that the cento was just written like prose, with no attempt at pretentious line breaks. TL;DR There were lots of heartbreakingly articulate, eloquent parts. Just too much, and very repetitive. If you've read this, do you agree? #bookreview #memoirs
