妻ラボ in 甑島④ 甑島では一生忘れられないくらいとにかくよく笑い、泣きました。 大人になっても私たちの心の中には「小さかった頃の私たち」がずっと住んでいる。それに気づくことができた旅でした。 ・・・ 縁の話、つづき。 （全然まとまりません、、けど書かないと） 里地区は親戚縁者のつながりがとても強い印象があり、その親族ひとまとまりのマインドのようなものを感じる旅でもありました。 中でも印象的だったのが今年亡くなられた平嶺のおじいちゃんの話。19歳で河童に出会い、直後に徴兵されるも玉砕攻撃をギリギリのところで免れシベリア抑留を生き延び、齢80を過ぎて美術の制作を始めたおじいちゃん。肉体としてはこの世からいなくなっても、愛にあふれる強靭なマインドが贈り物のように皆の心に残っている。こう在れるなら死は孤独ではないし、未来へのバトンにもなり得るんだと、、 人の死に対するこういう印象自体は４年前に友人が亡くなった時にも感じたのですが、「家族・親戚」というつながりから死を考えた時、私は祖父母から何を受け取っただろうか、父母から何を受け取るのか、「何も考えなくていいの？」と問われた気がしました。 ただでさえ甑島に来てから温かい空間に包まれ、甑メンバーと楽しく交流をし、「硫黄島の母」円さんのタロットで各々の心の中の言葉が引き出されて、心がリラックスしてたところ。大切な問いが天からすーっと降りてきた様でした。 自分は父からも母からも姉兄からもたくさん愛情をもらい、本当に恵まれた家庭でした。思い出の中の自分もずっと笑ってた記憶しかない、、と思っていました。ただ大人になるにつれて、こと家族全員での会話がほぼなかったこと、特に母とはお互いをわかり合う様なコミュニケーションが全然成立しないことが、喉に刺さった骨のようにずっと気になっていました。いやいや、なんでも好きなことさせてもらったし大学も行かせてもらって、留学もさせてもらったし、どこにいてもたくさん手紙をくれて、、贅沢にもちゃんと愛されてたじゃないか。 でも自分では大したことないと思い込んでいた寂しさに本当はとても傷ついてた、とようやくちゃんと認めることができました。寂しかった、って言っていいんだよなぁ。自分が嬉しかった言葉、欲しかった言葉。自分が親からかけてもらうことはもうないかもしれないけど、それはもう大丈夫。これから娘にかける言葉の数々が同時に自分への励ましになっていくような気がして猛烈に救われています。 同様に父や母もずっと、誰かからの愛情を求めていたんだろうなぁ。そこにちゃんと気づけた気がして、今からでも子の私から二人へ与えられる愛があるなと。危ない危ない、父と母を孤独な死に送り込むところだった、、 こんな風にいきなり感傷が炸裂してしまうのも、すべて甑島という場所と、そこに集う人々と、タロットにより心の声を引き出す硫黄島の母と、同時に爆誕した甑島の父が織り成した、マジックアワーのせい（おかげ）。 心の旅はまだまだ続きそうです。 完 #islandcompany #オソノベーカリー #fujiyahostel #コシキテラス #こしきツアーズ #ぷかり堂 #妻ラボ #甑島 #屋久島 #硫黄島 #鹿児島離島の仲間たち #鹿児島離島文化経済圏 #ジャンベ #スローライフ #移住 #薩摩硫黄島 #三島村 #鹿児島県 #camelliaisland #volcanoisland #satsumaiwojima #iwojima #mishimavillage #kagoshima #japan

妻ラボ in 甑島③ 縁の話、つづき。 ケンタさんが案内してくれた厳島神社を始め、甑島にはたくさんの神社があるそうです。でも管理する人も高齢になり、いつかは管理者0になる日が来る、それが気がかりだと話してくれました。誰も立ち入らなくなった神社を想像してみる、、 新興住宅街で育ち、親が新しめの宗教を信仰していたこともあって、大人になるまでは神事って全然身近じゃなかったし、神社は願いが叶うパワースポットくらいの認識でした。 神様は自然界のどこにでもいるし、宗教は「宗教心」というかたちで自分の中に作り上げていくものだと思っていたので、具体的な場所や行為はそんなに必要じゃないんじゃないか？とさえ思っていたくらい。 大学の授業や留学を通して、宗教が社会の成り立ちに深く関わっていることをやっと理解し、さらに硫黄島に来てからは、日本古来の宗教のあり方は、絶対的支配者のいない集団が螺旋状の１年の繰り返しの中で結束力を強め、生き残っていくための先人の知恵の様なものだと理解したのでした。 つながりの拠点となる神社。そして実際につながりを生み出す祭りや踊り。 鹿島公民館で、硫黄島民の数倍はいそうな規模の祭りの映像資料を見たけど、この祭りは撮影から数年後に人口減少でなくなってしまったと聞いて、心底惜しいと思いました。 例えば今後硫黄島でどんなに人が減ってしまっても、ギリギリまでそこに根付いた祭りや踊りなどの行事をなくしてはいけないな、と肌身で感じます。行事をなくすことはつながりを無くすことだから。また、いくら物理的に人の流れをつくったところで、経済的な理由で作られたつながりは、結局ヒエラルキーを生み出して弱いものを淘汰する傾向にあると思います。 ちょっと文章がぐしゃぐしゃですが、「何がその集団を束ねているのか」をちゃんと理解することはとても大切なことだと思った次第でした。 #islandcompany #オソノベーカリー #fujiyahostel #コシキテラス #こしきツアーズ #ぷかり堂 #妻ラボ #甑島 #屋久島 #硫黄島 #鹿児島離島の仲間たち #鹿児島離島文化経済圏 #ジャンベ #スローライフ #移住 #薩摩硫黄島 #三島村 #鹿児島県 #camelliaisland #volcanoisland #satsumaiwojima #iwojima #mishimavillage #kagoshima #japan

妻ラボ in 甑島② 今回はいろいろな縁を感じる旅でした。 まず驚いたのが、甑島と三島のジャンベのつながり。オソノにジャンベが置いてあったんです。普通置いてないよ、ジャンベ笑。こしきツアーズの純子さんとケンタさんが甑島の伝統楽器・ゴッタンを復活させ、島で音楽イベントを企画した時に三島村のジャンベも招待したとのこと。 さらに今から遡ること30年、こしきツアーズのトモさんは写真科の学生だった頃、研究でママディ・ケイタの日本ツアーに同行し写真撮影をしていたそうで(！)、貴重な写真をたくさん見せていただきました。息遣いが聞こえてきそうな臨場感あるショットの数々に、全盛期のママディの演奏を聞きたかった！とつい羨ましさが顔を覗かせる、、 お互いに文化交流を、ということで、ゴッタンの演奏を聞かせてもらいました。懐かしいような素朴な弦の音色と純子さんのハリのある歌声（頑張りなさいよと背中を押してもらえる様な声なんです）。お返しに、ジャンベでジョレのダンスを披露しました。私は太鼓係でしたが、酒を飲んで踊るもんじゃないそうです笑 ゴッタンもジャンベも、先人がいない分野で地道に活動を続けるのは大変なこと。鑑賞者がいなければ芸術は育たないから、人口の少ない島の中で続ける意味について葛藤することもきっとあったと思います。でもこうしてお互い長い時間をかけて島の中でひとつの文化として根付かせ、それを交歓し合っていることが嬉しかったです。そして硫黄島で20年間ジャンベを続けてきた師匠のことを、改めてすごい人だと思いました。 文化交流、しましょう！ #islandcompany #オソノベーカリー #fujiyahostel #コシキテラス #こしきツアーズ #ぷかり堂 #妻ラボ #甑島 #屋久島 #硫黄島 #鹿児島離島の仲間たち #鹿児島離島文化経済圏 #ジャンベ #スローライフ #移住 #薩摩硫黄島 #三島村 #鹿児島県 #camelliaisland #volcanoisland #satsumaiwojima #iwojima #mishimavillage #kagoshima #japan

#LateNightHistory — How A Green Bay Packer Returned Home in a Casket With 2 Silver Stars “We were in Chicago on December 7 to watch the Bears-Cardinals game. Coach Lambeau took the whole team down to scout the Bears,” recalled Green Bay Packer’s guard, and genius behind the draw play, Charles “Buckets” Goldenberg. “They announced the bombing of Pearl Harbor during the game. We just didn’t know how it would affect anything. We were stunned like everyone else.” While some Packers players were rejected from military service because they had “joints of 80-year-old men,” another Packer guard named Howard “Smiley” Johnson didn’t have the miles on him so he commissioned in the US Marines in 1942. He and others in 4th Marine Division saw action in Saipan during the Battle of Kwajalein. When the Japanese counterattacked the flank position held by his platoon, 1st Lt. Johnson exposed himself to heavy fire, annihilated advancing enemy soldiers, and even engaged with others in hand-to-hand combat who penetrated the position. For his actions, he was awarded his first Silver Star medal. On Feb. 19, 1945, Johnson was seriously wounded by an artillery shell at the Battle of Iwo Jima. Although a Navy corpsman rushed to his aid, he declined medical attention until 4 enlisted Marines received care first. He died on the battlefield. His father miraculously survived Iwo Jima, one of the few Marines in his unit to live through the 36-day bloodbath in the Pacific during World Warr II. After the war, Joseph Giarraffa returned to his home in Queens, NY where he worked for the New York City Sanitation Department. In Queens, Joseph and wife Nancy raised 5 children. One his boys was future OLT Volunteer Bruce Giarraffa. Bruce’s father instilled in him a tenacious work ethic, the importance of community and an indomitable spirit. He also passed along a John Muir-like love of nature. As a child, Bruce’s Dad would take his family for weekend trips to the mountain forests of upstate New York. In the Adirondacks, Bruce fell in love with the wonders of nature. All it took for Bruce, was one visit to the Desert to realize he had found another home. In the Coachella Valley, Bruce found community, companionship, and a sense of purpose. Most of all, he found peace. Holland Smith April 20, 1882 – January 12, 1967 8th Machine Gun company 4th Marine Brigade 2nd Infantry Division (WW1) 1st Marine Division (WW2) Known for leading the US Marines to victory, island hopping across the Pacific World War 1: Smith was detached from the 5th Marines and sent to the Army General Staff College at Langres, from which he graduated in February 1918. He was the first of only six Marines ever to complete this course. He was then named Adjutant of the 4th Marine Brigade, which was a part of the U.S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division, serving in a relatively quiet sector southeast of Verdun. During the fighting in and around Belleau Wood, he played "a vital though undramatic" role as brigade liaison officer, overseeing internal communications within the brigade. Transferred to the I Corps, First Army, in July 1918, he served as assistant operations officer in charge of liaison during the Aisne-Marne, Oisne-Aisne Offensive, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives. On 25 November 1918, Smith was promoted to the temporary rank of major. World War 2: He took command of the Amphibious Corps, Pacific Fleet, under which he completed the amphibious indoctrination of the 2d and 3d Marine Divisions before they went overseas, and the 7th Army Division and other units involved in the Aleutians operation. The Amphibious Corps, Pacific Fleet, was later redesignated the V Amphibious Corps, and in September 1943, as commander of that unit, Smith arrived at Pearl Harbor to begin planning for the Gilbert Islands campaign. Promoted to lieutenant general in February 1944. He continued to lead the V Amphibious Corps until August 1944, when he was named commanding general, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, at Pearl Harbor. Subsequently, he commanded the Fleet Marine Force. In addition to that post, he commanded Task Force 56 in the Battle of Iwo Jima before returning to the United States in July 1945 to head the Marine Training and Replacement Command at Camp Pendleton, California. Holland was known for the quote "In our corps without responsibility and discipline we would not have won the Battle of Iwo Jima."

I will be starting a new project from @eduardmodels. The P-51D Very Long Range Tales of Iwojima. Had this kit for a long time and felt it’s the right time to start it. I have some goodies like the gun bays, wheel bay and gun sights. Also got some masks for painting the different metal tones and insignia masks too. I also will use @gaahleri_airbrush new ABs, the Mobius 0.2mm and the GHAC-98D ace series for the paint job. Really looking forward to see how these ABs behave. Read and heard good things about them. WIP 36th Marine Depot Co. (Montford Point) kit, Iwo Jima- March 1945: A while back I found footage of Montford Point depot co. Marines on a DUKW on Iwo Jima. I’ve included it in this post. Something unique I noticed is how they are wearing 2nd Pattern Army HBT jackets. This wouldn’t have been unusual however, as there are many photos of black Marines wearing Army uniform items including coveralls, leggings, and field jackets. This idea came to me on what would have been my grandfather’s 99th birthday. . . He was a WWII marine in the Pacific and often talked about his time at war and at Iwo Jima. As a grandfather, he was always a jovial personality and I remember being shocked as he chuckled through horrific things he had seen. The family always joked about getting stuck for an entire dinner party hearing his stories. I now realize that was his way of still trying to process everything 60-70 years later. A big family party with a dozen grandkids and his mind is still on an aircraft carrier. . One of my last conversations with him, I told him I was dating a Japanese guy and quickly followed up with the fact that his grandfather had been jailed for peacefully protesting WWII, so he never would have encountered him. He responded by acknowledging he now understands everyone in war was just doing what they had to do and were told to do. He can’t hold hate for them anymore. I later learned about the things he was trying to escape at home that likely led to him enlisting. He was also just trying to find his way. . . . So Grandpa, I’d like to think you sent me this idea. I wish you had peace. And I wish you never had to experience so much. 令和６年 日米硫黄島戦没者合同慰霊追悼顕彰式 その名の通り、風向きによりわずかに硫黄のにおいがする硫黄島。小笠原諸島の父島から南に約２８０ｋｍに位置します。 太平洋戦争の激戦地の１つであり、１９４５年２月１９日、日本国内最初の陸上戦闘が行われました。激しい戦闘で日本軍２万１９００名、米軍６８２１名が亡くなり、未だ１万１０００人近くの英霊の遺骨が島に眠っています。 戦後４０年が経ち、１９８５年（昭和６０年）の２月１９日、初めて日米双方の元軍人・退役軍人ら４００名による合同慰霊祭が行われました。 3月30日に行われた日米硫黄島戦没者合同慰霊追悼顕彰式に米側からは海兵隊第三海兵遠征軍軍司令官ロジャー・ターナー中将、在日海軍司令官カール・ラティ少将、米国大使館首席公使レイモンド・グリーン氏、そして米国硫黄島協会会長デービッド・バイス海兵隊少将（退役）が出席しました。 硫黄島協会会長寺本鐵朗氏が追悼の言葉で「今日我々が享受する平和と繁栄は、それぞれ祖国、郷土そして家族を愛する勇敢な戦士たちの尊い犠牲と日米両国民のたゆまぬ努力の上に成り立ったことも忘れてはならない」と述べました。 第109師団長で硫黄島で戦死した、栗林忠道陸軍大将の孫で経済再生担当大臣の新藤義孝議員が「地下壕に潜んだままの旧日本軍兵士の遺骨収容は５割に届かず、未だ１万１千人余りの方々がこの島で眠り続けています」と語り、英霊の追悼・検証を行う共に、彼らの遺骨が故郷に還れるように活動を続けていくと誓いました。 厚生労働省社会・援護局の令和５年５月の資料によると沖縄・硫黄島を含む海外戦没者概数は約240万柱で、今現在も未収用遺骨概数が112万柱となっています。令和４年までに34万5244柱が収容され、遺族に遺骨を返せた件数は１６３８柱となりました。 デービッド・バイス海兵隊少将（退役）がノーマン・スミス海兵隊中将（退役）のメッセージを読み上げました。「献身的で勇敢な両国の兵士たちの事は決して忘れられることはありません。今日私たちがここで目にしている和解は日米間の歴史的な友情の揺るぎなき土台となるものです」 米国硫黄島協会によると硫黄島での３６日間の激戦で２７個の名誉勲章が海兵隊員２２名、そして海軍兵５名へ贈られました。（海兵隊大学によると第２次世界大戦に参加した海兵隊員に贈られた名誉勲章は全部で８２個） 「真の和解とは、日米が共に築き続ける友情と、共にする未来にあります」とレイモンド・グリーン氏が語りました。 結びに、ロジャー・ターナー中将が「（第三海兵遠征軍は）インド・太平洋地域の人道支援・災害救援・海の公共財の保護にいたるまで、唯一無二の統率された部隊として、いかなる危機にも対応できる即応態勢を維持しています。日米同盟は究極の希望の象徴であり、相互安全保障と協力の証」と力強く述べました。 慰霊碑は日本側（陸側）と米国（海側）で１つとなっており、両国が順番に献花・献水を行いました。 式典の音楽は陸上自衛隊中央音楽隊と第３海兵遠征軍音楽隊が合同演奏し、両国の深い繋がりを示していました。鎮魂歌として、日本側からは「故郷」、米国側からは「アメージング・グレース」が捧げられました。 黙祷、そして両音楽隊による鎮魂ラッパが演奏され、両国の国旗が退場し式典は閉会されました。 https://www.japan.marines.mil/News/Article/3730119/ #硫黄島 #日米硫黄島戦没者合同慰霊追悼顕彰式 #IIIMEF #USMC #iiimefband #Marines #JGSDF #JGSDF #JASDF #JMSDF #Iwojima #IwoTo #reunionofhonor #battleofiwojima #Memorialservice #ROH2024
Good clean picture of the ribbon bar to Col Fredrick Richard Dowsett USMC. Col Dowsett was a Graduate of the Us Naval Academy in June of 1936 and served in the Marines until June 30th 1966 when he finally retired after 30 honorable years in the marine corps. Dowsett Retired from the Marines as a Full Colonel after 30 years of service. Upon Retirement he was awarded the Navy and Marines corps commodation medal. Dowsett served in WW2 and was one the planers of the IWO JIMA landings. Also during ww2 Dowsett served as the 5th marine divisions G5 and G3. Dowsett would Earn the Legion of Merit with V and a Bronze Star with V for his actions during the Iwo Jima campaign. After ww2 Dowsett would serve on a number of different Staff positions before the outbreak of the Korean war. During the Korean war Dowsett served as Executive Officer to the 1st marine division 7th Marines. During the Korean war Dowsett would earn the Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars all with V and one Army award of the Bronze star. Dowsett would also earn the Purple heart when he was Wounded in action on December 6th 1950. After the Korean war Dowsett held a number of different Staff positions until his retirement in 1966 Dowsett was Born on October 13th 1911 in Battle Creek MI and passed away on December 5th 1986 in Annapolis MD The award citations I could find are listed below in the comments.
