April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. 💙 In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America introduced the pinwheel as the national symbol for child abuse prevention. Why? Because by its very nature, the pinwheel connotes playfulness, joy, and childhood. It has come to serve as a physical reminder of the great childhoods we want for all children. And as a symbol, the cyclical nature of the pinwheel calls to mind the positive cycles of love and support we want to help families create. The kids I visit are going through so much change, based on their living situation, the bump in schools, friends, new environments, that for one hour they have a ME, who is not judging them in any way and showing them unconditional love. On my last visit the kids and I had so much fun making “pawcasso” paintings with their hand and my paw. #MissonMonday We have ramped up our community support visits this fall. These visits are typically multiple Pet Therapy teams visiting a school or agency for an hour in a group setting. Last Friday, we had eight Pet Therapy teams at a mental health fair at Shadow Mountain High School - PVSchools to help support students for National Suicide Prevention month. Though we couldn't show faces, students and staff loved interacting with the teams. One student even exclaimed, “This just made my day!” “It’s wonderful to have this opportunity for our students. Dogs just make life better and make us all feel better. We are grateful that the Pet Therapy teams were able to visit with us today,” said David Appleman, Principal. Recently, Crittenton Centers' Crisis Nursery received a call from a father of a three-month-old son whose mother was in the hospital. He didn't know how he would be able to care for his child and work his 3rd shift job. He said the hospital suggested he call the Crisis Nursery. We were able to care for his son during his overnight shifts for the duration of her hospital stay.
