COMPARISON: This year I have made 3 films with iPhone 15 Pro Max and I absolutely adore it. It’s freeing in a way I never imagined now the quality of the image is so incredible. Today I will compare shots from GEIST and THE GIRL THAT HOPE FORGOT, shot using native lenses and MR JUSTICE using @reeflexcamera 2X Telephoto. But I did find a couple of limitations that hindered my creative process, limitations that the Reeflex 2x Telephoto Len’s has solved. **DEPTH OF FIELD** I’m not afraid of deep focus, in fact I love it. There is an over reliance of a blurry background as a means to make something “Cinematic”. But sometimes you want that depth to focus in on a character and give them a moment and this is really difficult on iPhone. If you want some background blur you have to pull right back to use the 5x telephoto and make sure your subject is as far from the background as possible. The native 2x zoom being a crop doesn’t give you anything. Then there’s cinematic mode… which is a gimmick that’s not usable professionally yet. You lose the ability to shoot ProRes, you get awful noise, it shifts and warps… it’s great for a family holiday, just not a film. The Reeflex lens gives you that lovely medium shot and softens the background beautifully. It’s natural and looks really quite stunning. I found myself constantly surprised and excited about how superb the shots were coming out. **SPACE** As previously mentioned, the limitation of the 5x zoom is that you need to pull right back to get the shot and have a significant distance between the actor and the back drop to squeeze even a little depth from a shot. I would find myself compressed into corners just to make a shot work. With the 2x I could be just a couple of feet away and get the shot I wanted. I had lot of freedom to move as I wanted with out having to become a contortionist. Having just ruptured my meniscus, this was a god send on MR JUSTICE. Continued in comments…

Yesterday I ‘nipped out’ to Stornoway (hardly nipping out as it’s 45 mins away😂) I stopped to say hi to Iain’s sheep on the way out. Then at the top of the hill behind us I stopped to take in the view of the lock we live next too. #breathtaking ❤️ On the way back, I spotted Paul & Amanda’s Highland Coos & I obviously had to stop and say hi to them as they’re so cute (the coos are about 10 mins away from us at the moment as that’s where they’ve been getting their winter feed - they’ll soon move onto higher ground as the days start to warm up). I then headed to the gas station for fuel - beautiful views from the station. On the way back home, I just had to stop and take a photo of the rainbow. As a reminder of what stage our house is at (ready for the roofing to go on) this photo also has the front door panel in it as well as the panel for the downstairs bathroom. We then headed out on a date ❤️ we watched Wonka at the ‘cinema’! Mobile cinema operators would travel the country hooking TVs and VCRs up to portable generators to create impromptu theaters. All they needed was a wall for screening and a couple of benches and chairs. As these mobile cinemas increased in popularity, so did the need for the entrepreneurs running them to distinguish their own offerings. A mobile cinema in Cambodia. BAMPFA staff are fortunate to currently be in Phnom Penh, Cambodia as part of a knowledge/culture exchange grant with the famous @bophanacenter Bophana Film Centre. This weekend we tagged along for Bophana's amazing mobile cinema project, driving about four hours to set up a one-night-only screening of films for a Kuy indigenous community in Phum Veal Veng village, Chhuk Commune, Prasat Sambour District of Kampong Thom Province. Most importantly, some of the films are by local indigenous youth who participated in a Bophana filmmaking workshop, and reflect the stories and histories of those within the community. "Showcasing films crafted by local filmmakers within the Kuy Indigenous community," writes Bophana head Sopheap Chea, "this event aims to express gratitude to community members for their participation in the filmmaking project." The night gives the community a chance to see themselves onscreen, and attracted an audience of over 300! "What do you think," one Bophana member asked the kids afterwards. "I want to be a filmmaker!," some responded. Having watched in wonder as the team set up and broke down their equipment, another one blurted out, "I want to be a projectionist!" Most importantly, some of the films are by local indigenous youth who participated in a Bophana filmmaking workshop, and reflect the stories and histories of those within the community. "Showcasing films crafted by local filmmakers within the Kuy Indigenous community," writes Bophana head Sopheap Chea, "this event aims to express gratitude to community members for their participation in the filmmaking project." The night gives the community a chance to see themselves onscreen, and attracted an audience of over 300! "What do you think," one Bophana member asked the kids afterwards. "I want to be a filmmaker!," some responded. Having watched in wonder as the team set up and broke down their equipment, another one blurted out, "I want to be a projectionist!"
