Hi Group, In Mosiah 5, King Benjamin continued his address. In V1-2, when asked if they believed his words, the people cried with one voice, “Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us,...we know of their surety and truth, because of the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent, which has wrought a mighty change in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.” (V2). In V3-6, the power of God’s word, through King Benjamin, brought faith, conversion, covenants, and joy to the people. The people proclaimed, “we are willing to enter into a covenant with our God to do his will, and to be obedient to his commandments in all things that He shall command us,” (V5). In V7-14, King Benjamin proclaimed that because of their covenant, they would be called, the children of Christ, His sons and daughters. The people’s hearts had been changed through their faith in Christ’s name. They took upon themselves the name of Christ they were spiritually born again. King Benjamin proclaimed, “under this head ye are made free, and there is no other head whereby ye can be made free. There is no other name given whereby salvation cometh...” (V8). He exhorted them to always remember Christ’s name and never be “blotted out” through transgression. King Benjamin admonished his people “to retain the name written always in your hearts, that ye are not found on the left hand of God, but that ye hear and know the voice by which ye shall be called...For how knoweth a man the master whom he has not served...?” (V12-13). “And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree.” - 1 Nephi 8:24 Tonight, I read that verse for the first time from the perspective of a person struggling with their mental health. ❤️🩹 Sometimes, when you’re buried or drowning in the thick and heavy emotions and thoughts inside your mind, it can be hard to see how far you’ve come and to interpret what Heavenly Father is trying to show you or teach you. We go through life experiencing trial after trial, and some moments - the moments where you’re trapped and consumed by your own mind - feel like you’re never going to be pulled out of the deep pit you’re in. 😞 But something I pulled from my scripture study tonight is this…more often than not, you’re going to have to press forward through whatever obstacle or struggle you’re facing, but you’re never alone in that moment. When it feels impossible to keep pressing forward, leaning on the people, the resources that are around you, and the faith that you have is crucial to make it through; clinging with all your might to God and Jesus, clinging to God’s word, and going to Him in prayer is what’s going to help get you through it. 🫶🏻 That’s not to say that every trial you face will be easy-peasy or will magically go away simply because you have faith and lean on God, but it will make it more bearable to endure knowing you’re not alone. Trials really suck. I’ve had a lot of them over the years, and the ones I’ve had this year aren’t any easier. But know this: you’re not alone in this life. You are loved. I am loved. WE are loved by an all powerful Father in Heaven and a loving Savior. 🥹 They are waiting for all of us to turn to Them in every moment of life. ♥️

Exploring Trust in the Divine Have you ever paused to consider if there’s anything too hard for the Lord? This question resonated with me deeply as I listened to an audiobook on “The Saints” today, where it echoed a profound scripture from Jeremiah. It’s a reminder that when the Lord sets His mind to do something, it’s bound to happen—no matter the odds. It’s fascinating, isn’t it? That He chooses to work through us—people who often feel weak or wavering in faith. There’s comfort in knowing that He turns our weaknesses into strengths and molds us into vessels of His power. Our part is simple yet profound: to trust. Trust that there is a divine will at play, far greater than our own plans and desires. It’s not about defying His will, but aligning ourselves with it, understanding that our journey is not just our own, but a part of a bigger, divine tapestry. So, let’s lean in and trust, with hearts open to the possibilities of what can be achieved when we let go and let God work through us. Hear Him!
Did not Christ command us to do service unto one another? Did he not live a life of service to others? Even his death was a service to others. To us. Should we not strive to live as he did? Let us live as he did to truly be considered a disciple of Christ and follow of our Savior. To live the lifestyle of a Christian. Give unto others. Love others. Live not for your own desires and thoughts but for the thoughts and desires unto others as Christ would have us do. I challenge anyone who reads this to keep these verses in mind as you go about each day and see what you can do for others. Even simply holding a door open for others. Do what you can as our Savior would. Many people see the BITE model as a black and white way of determining whether or not an organization is a cult. I think that the approach needs to be taken differently. Consider the example of Behavior control. A common example of behavior control given for the BITE model is that a cult controls the clothing you wear. I can already hear the comments now... "if you work for UPS you will have to wear a uniform, does that mean UPS is a cult?" And any other variation of this. I encourage you to think of the BITE model as a guide to consider when trying to determine how much authority you are letting an organization have over you. And not to be hung up on terms like cult. Sure, a UPS driver is required to wear a uniform. Corporate managers likely can't wear jeans. But once they are off the clock, that authority ends. Remember this. An organization only has as much control over you as you are willing to give it. So how much are you willing to give? #exmormon #Mormon #lds #religion #atheist #agnostic #Christian #Christianity
In the previous article associated with this series, I discussed Healthy Relationships Utah at length. However, this organization does not have a monopoly on excellent community-based relationship education programs funded by public dollars. I’ll highlight here just two programs that I admire. MotherWise serves mostly low-income pregnant women and new mothers in the Denver area and is the flagship program of Thriving Families and the on-ramp for a set of other valued services for these lower-income moms. A class in English or Spanish begins almost every week, so moms can start the program right away. Teen moms have their own separate classes, using a different curriculum, Love Notes (which is also used in Healthy Relationships Utah). The curriculum is designed for individuals rather than couples, although many of these moms are in romantic relationships, married, and all have children. MotherWise is a 6-week, 12-hour educational program focused on gaining knowledge and skills for healthy relationships using the well-researched Within My Reach curriculum. It also includes information on mothers caring for and connecting with their babies. Further east is a program in Oklahoma City: Family Expectations and True Dads. This program is offered through Public Strategies Inc. (PSI), a private human services company that delivers relationship education, fatherhood and co-parenting education, and workforce development services to lower-income individuals and couples in Oklahoma City. Kathy Edin, Princeton University professor and one of the most important social policy scholars in the country, believes that PSI’s work is one of the most important local social policy laboratories in the country right now. She argues that what they do is a beacon for other social policy efforts nationwide to improve the lives of disadvantaged families. If your family makes comments or if they are judging you, let them judge you. You cannot control their thoughts. However, you can create boundaries. Happy Monday! Reflecting on Ecclesiastes 9:5, we find a profound message: ‘For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten.’ This verse speaks to the state of the dead as one of unconsciousness, where earthly concerns, including time, no longer have relevance. It highlights the belief in a ‘sleep’ until the resurrection, rather than an immediate transition to heaven or hell. April 29–May 5: “A Mighty Change” Mosiah 4–6 Hi Group, In Mosiah 4, King Benjamin continued his address, teaching his people the way to salvation. In V1-8, the multitude had fallen to the earth after hearing King Benjamin’s angelic prophecies about the Savior, “for the fear of the Lord had come upon them.” (V1). They viewed themselves in their carnal state and cried in one voice, “O have mercy, and apply the atoning blood of Christ that we may receive forgiveness of our sins, and our hearts may be purified...” (V2). The spirit of the Lord filled their hearts with joy, having received the remission of their sins. King Benjamin taught that, do to the carnal state of man, there was need for the atoning blood of Christ, which would bring peace of conscience, true conversion and salvation. Man is dependent upon God and His matchless power. In V9-13, King Benjamin taught that God has all wisdom and power over heaven and earth. Remission of sins comes through sincere repentance, and forgiveness through God’s glory, goodness, and love. We receive joy by keeping our covenants with God. We are filled with Christ’s love through humility, prayer and steadfast faith. Those who grow in the knowledge of the Savior, would never have the desire to harm others, and would live in peace. In V14-15, King Benjamin taught about raising righteous children. Parents are to provide for their children and teach them to value truth and love one another. Quarreling is of the devil. In V16-26, we learn about caring for the poor and needy. “Are we not all beggars?” (V19). To retain the remission of sins and guiltlessness before God, we are required to impart our substance on the poor and refrain from judgement. To those who do not have the means to give, King Benjamin exhorted, “I would that ye say in your hearts that: I give not because I have not, but if I had I would give.” (V24). Giving to the poor includes substantive and spiritual giving. In V27-29, all things are to be done in order and we are to not run faster we have strength. Beware of the many diverse ways to sin. 🎓M E M O I R🎓 Educated - Tara Westover Her or me? Tara's education opened my eyes to an unthinkable reality. 👩🏻🎓The woman: undeniably inspirational. A lonely childhood, no peer connection, permeated by constant tragedy; accidents on the farm, car crashes, horrific fires, and more than your average childhood falls. Tara suffered a lack of education & healthcare, finding calm in her love for the Mormon tabernacle choir, and Buck's Peak mountain in rural Idaho. "I had come to respect pain, even revere it, as necessary and untouchable." Amidst a violent, degrading upbringing, constant abuse by her brother and father, Tara had little self worth; believing she was unworthy of an education, particularly of a Cambridge/Harvard standard. I am in awe of her conscientious, diligent, resourceful attitude to obtaining her prestigious education, and her resilience to continue with so little knowledge & understanding of what most would consider the basics. It is a relief to learn Tara turned to counselling, that it was 'nourishing', and able to provide something she could not provide for herself. Although it did not come easy - Tara has lost her family, chosen to walk away because she could not conform, and is not accepted for who she is - it is good to know Tara has found peace. "Guilt is never about them, guilt is the fear of one's own wretchedness, it has nothing to do with other people." 📖The book: astounding, hard to believe anyone lived this life. Tara's parents are delusional, toxic, uncaring, and psychologically damaging. Her father's mania, manipulation & control against the government, an education, and medicine is wild. He is mentally ill, his mental health issues ignored, his violence & abuse unpredictable & unrelenting, and the impact on his children evident & chilling. "The decisions I made after that moment were not the ones she would have made. They were the choices of a changed person, a new self. You could call this selfhood many things; transformation, metamorphosis, falsity, betrayal. I, call it an education." This book is an ode to Tara's journey to, and in, education, resulting in her independence and self-love. A mighty achievement. . . .
Today I scrolled through @davidarchie ‘s comment sections, and I observed so many Mormon members demeaning him for sharing his experience leaving the church and the happiness he feels having left. I just had the thought about how fragile a religion must be to be so threatened by ex-Mormons speaking out and sharing their experiences inside and outside of the religion. They are so upset that people will not leave quietly. To me, one explanation is fear that seeing people leave will give others courage to follow their heart/gut/intuition/spirit and do the same. Or that they feel so much grief that they can’t leave, it pains them to see others living their own truth, morals, and values. For when people are finding joy, peace, and happiness after leaving the church, everything we had been told starts to slowly fall apart. ROME (AP) — Tech giant Cisco Systems on Wednesday joined Microsoft and IBM in signing onto a Vatican-sponsored pledge to ensure artificial intelligence is developed and used ethically and to benefit the common good. Cisco Systems chief executive Chuck Robbins signed the document, known as the Rome Call, and met privately with Pope Francis, the Vatican said. The pledge outlines key pillars of ethical and responsible use of AI. It emphasizes that AI systems must be designed, used and regulated to serve and protect the dignity of all human beings, without discrimination, and their environments. It highlights principles of transparency, inclusion, responsibility, impartiality and security as necessary to guide all AI developments. Most of the time, I believe that I am a lousy Christian. I don't say that to be told otherwise because this thought form has existed for so long, you can't say anything to disprove it. Each Sunday I look around and see men who are more contrite, holy, and gentler than I am. For all my trying I find myself consistently annoyed, impatient, and, for a lack of a better word, failing. Failing at being what I see as a good church-going man. I am not without hope though. Despite this utter failure in conforming, there are things I do know. I know that, long before I was born, Jesus knew me. And just like Jeremiah, he loves me and calls me anyways. He knows my strengths, weaknesses, and everything in between. He knows my still healing heart (and it is still healing in so many ways) and holds it safe. Imprinted on my soul is a love for him. How could I not? He sees through my hot mess and sees my potential...my effort. He has known me long before I can remember and he still chooses me. In fact, he knows that there may be a day when I finally get it. A day when those flaws I listed above will become strengths and I am no longer frustrating to him or myself! Until then, I will rely on his grace and find solace in the fact that he knows me...and loves me regardless of my weaknesses!
