These are the moth eggs I previously posted about. They hatched today, so, 11 days after I first noticed the eggs on the ceiling of our porch. The first two hatched at 10am today and through the course of the day more kept hatching until all of them were out by 10pm. They seemed to linger until all of their siblings had hatched and then they began “ballooning” away. Our back porch was deemed worthy once again of hosting moth eggs! These were deposited on the ceiling and in too impractical a location for me to set up my macro gear, so I had to settle for holding my camera above my head and hoping for the best. Last fall, when we also had a batch of moth eggs on the porch ceiling, I wondered why a moth would lay eggs in the “food desert” that is our porch. Once they hatched, the answer came, as I watched each tiny caterpillar sail away on a long line of silk it produced. An act called ballooning. Momma moth and one of her eggs! She has laid over 30 eggs so far! Fingers crossed they are fertile! Mom is a Calleta Silkmoth, Eupackardia calleta. I received her, one other female, and two males in their cocoons back in May. Guess what happens to these butterfly/moth eggs when the leaf falls to the ground? Chances are, here in the city (at least where this leaf is) the leaf will be picked up and trashed or mowed. Either way, no chance of survival for whatever butterfly/moth lives on this leaf. Then multiply that exponentially for all the others we didn’t see. Love them or hate them nature relies on insects (and the fallen leaves) for one purpose or another. It keeps things in balance. Removing everything to be neat and tidy undoes the balance. It’s one of the reasons we have more pests like mosquitoes. Life can be exhausting. Let’s give ourselves a break this fall and let some leaves fall and forget about them. Or, pile them/secure them into a corner of the yard or around a tree. We can deal with them in the spring, after the insects have flown and still have our perfectly beautiful green spaces and gardens. The female Fox moth who was the star of this morning’s trap laid about thirty eggs! Think I might have to try to raise these ones and see if they emerge next year. Hazel found a female Promethea Moth outside our back door yesterday. Her wings were rather worn so I figured she had already mated and laid her eggs. We put her in a jar to observe her and possibly keep her wings when she dies. Instead, she became very active at dusk and laid eggs! What a fun surprise! This is my first time having a moth lay eggs. We can't wait to watch them hatch and feed the caterpillars this summer. We may release some of them back into the wild, as 21 Promethea caterpillars is more work than I need to tend to right now. Promethea moths mate in the afternoon, instead of nighttime like other moths from the Giant Silk Moth family, Saturniidae. A visit from my parents is not complete without a few moth trapping sessions. Last night was far more successful than the previous nights as we moved the trap nearer to the trees and away from where our chickens can free roam in the field. There were some beautiful and interesting specimens in the trap. The yellow moth eggs “hatched” last night or this morning. So I guess the whole process takes about a week or a little more than a week. Here are pictures from all the stages. Minus the “moth” laying the eggs of course. I looked around to see if I could find larva but I didn’t see any. I was just hoping maybe there was some lagging behind.
