I love lentils. They’re maybe not the trendiest superfood out there but they are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. They’re so quick to prepare, delicious and on top of it all very cheap. I am currently “project panning” my perfume collection (which I didn’t even know was a thing until recently...) with the aim of having only one perfume for daily use as I honestly don’t think I need more than that at a time. One of my favorites is Fresh Laundry from Clean. This perfume is so fresh, simple and clean, just what I like. With a more mindful approach to shopping and spending money I’m trying to learn how to buy less, need less, and want less. So far my experience of the minimalistic shopping style is very positive. It feels effortless and right and I actually enjoy the fact that nothing but groceries or other necessities can end up in my shopping bag, and those ideally when my current stocks are used up. The time and money saved, and the storage space gained are no doubt big motivators, too. But sooner or later I will find myself tempted again to buy something I “really really want”. Then I need to be prepared to ask myself some fundamental questions. Why do I really want it? Do I really need it? How do I keep myself focused on the healthy lifestyle when I constantly feel like life gets in the way of my good decisions? In theory, I have all the answers and I know what I’m supposed to do. In practice, I’m busy, I’m tired, I have excuses. I start losing focus. One of the most important tools that keeps me at least aware of the direction I’m heading to is to continue keeping journal and tracking my habits, especially on the bad days when I feel like I’m drifting far away from my goals. Those are in fact the days I should pay even closer attention to and learn my biggest lessons from: what are the moments when I feel stressed, overwhelmed, unfocused, and what are the choices I make in those situations? Can I anticipate and prevent bad choices by planning ahead and being better prepared? I also try not to be too hard on myself. If I slip back into old habits once in a while, it’s not the end of the road, as long as I pick myself up and get back on track. While decluttering some drawers I found my long lost pedometer which I had forgotten even existed. I was about to throw it away thinking it’s no longer working. Turned out, it only required a new battery, and it was as good as new. I also realized I don’t need any new fancy activity trackers, this simple step counter will totally do the trick for me. Now I’m keeping it in my pocket all the time to count my daily steps, and this has also led me to changing slightly my daily walking goal from a certain number of minutes to a certain number of steps instead. This is one of the goals I’ve been struggling with, not so much with the walking itself but rather with the measuring the minutes all day long, so now I just let the pedometer do the job on its own in my pocket. This simple habit tracker I created for myself in Excel is helping me monitor the daily habits I want to plant in my life. The spreadsheet acts as a reminder and it allows me to see right away my progress, which habits I embrace and which ones I need to work on. . It looks like I’m doing really well with the habits I’ve incorporated as part of my morning routine. So well that these new habits already seem like an integral part of my morning and I don’t have to think twice about them. But I’m not doing so well with some other habits I tend to do towards the end of the day. The worst: going to bed by 10 pm which I’ve managed only once in January. . So there’s definitely going to be some thinking and planning required before I start to see more progress in certain areas. But all in all I’m really happy with the way my year has started. Awareness is the key when it comes to healthy eating and the best way to gain that awareness is by keeping a food journal. . Before I started food journaling I was quite lost with my eating habits. I THOUGHT I was eating healthy yet I was gaining weight and feeling uncomfortable in my skin. I considered myself a victim, I blamed slow metabolism, I cursed bad genes. . Until finally I started writing down everything I ate. Every single bite and meal including the calories and macronutrients. And boy what an eye-opener it was! I had no idea of how much sugar and fat I had been feeding my body with, or how little protein and fiber I was getting. When I managed to find the right nutritional balance things started to fall into place. And I knew it was all up to me if I just wanted to. . But as beneficial as it is tracking all your food consumption is quite time consuming. When I start I only manage to do it for so long before I drop it. And then I start falling back into my old habits... My goal is to be able to follow healthy eating patterns intuitively without having to note everything down. Last day of 2018 is here and it’s time to think about New Year’s resolutions ✨ . Although I believe in making good decisions all year round I also like the idea that once a year I get to ‘officially’ push the reset button for a fresh new start. I know it’s corny in this cynical day and age where new year’s resolutions are considered uncool and nobody seems to be making them anymore. But I’m an eternal optimist and so here I am looking towards 2019, promising myself that this coming year I will eat better, sleep better, exercise more and ‘minimalize’ more. I will adopt habits that give me good energy and make me feel healthy and happy. I will get rid of unnecessary things that serve no purpose and I will create a clutter-free life, both physically and mentally. But I am also promising myself to learn from my past (and future) mistakes. In order to get things going - and keep them going - I need to break down my lofty goals into smaller and more attainable goals. Instead of just focusing on the outcome I should think about the process itself and create new habits and systems to support my end goals, make small changes and adjustments, and make them part of my everyday life in a natural and effortless way. I don’t have it all figured out yet but I’m trusting that I’ll find my way to the right path on this journey to a healthier, happier place I wish to be heading to while entering 2019 ✨

Walking is one of my favorite forms of physical activities. It is simple, easy and free. It lifts my spirits, clears my thoughts and keeps me in form. And all I need is to put one foot in front of the other! No need to plan ahead or arrange time for it either, several short walks throughout the day as part of my natural daily activity can be just as beneficial as one long walk a day. Incorporating much more walking activity into my days is definitely going to be one of my New Year’s resolutions in 2019!

Hello Darkness my old friend... Or how I embrace Winter solstice, the shortest and darkest day of the year: I light a candle or two (or three or four). I prepare a mug of hot chocolate (with some “optional” marshmallows). I curl up under the blanket (alone is perfect, but in good company is also perfect). I put on a romantic Christmas movie (like The Holiday or Love Actually, or both actually). I sip the hot chocolate and enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling (and almost feel sorry that from tomorrow on the days will start to get a little bit longer and longer again...)

This time of year is all about spending quality time with family and friends. It is even more important to me as I live in another country and rarely get to see them. I am so grateful that I have kept in touch with many of my friends I grew up with and whenever I come back to my hometown we get together, talk, eat, laugh, enjoy each other’s company. It is as if I had never left. That’s the kind of friendship I value more than anything. Now is time to eat, drink and be merry. Tomorrow I’ll count my calories, today I count my blessings. ❤️

When I see all the things I have acquired over the years, the unused objects lying around and taking up space in my home, I get overwhelmed. How, and more importantly WHY did I end up with so much excess stuff I don’t use or need? How much money have I spent on it and how could I have used that money more wisely? What am I going to do with all this stuff now?! The unnecessary possessions are weighing me down and the cluttered corners of my home are telling me something important: I don’t need this stuff, it doesn’t make me happy and I need to do something about it. The very first thing, before I start de-cluttering and purging and reorganizing, is to stop making unnecessary excessive purchases, to nip it in the bud in the first place. And to realize how little stuff I really need in this life in order to find happiness, purpose and freedom.

I need more keystone habits in my life! Those powerful routines that will start a positive chain reaction and make my life better... Food journal, regular exercise, and eight hours of sleep, those will keep me on track and will help me make better choices. But also the tiniest routines I’m usually very good at skipping or postponing, such as making my bed or emptying the dishwasher (I’m the worst!). While these routines will not magically change my life, performing them will keep my home tidy and organised, make me feel good about myself and send a positive message to my brain: you did it, now go accomplish other things!

Frustrated that most of my waking hours are spent in the office, sitting in front of a computer, racing against deadlines under increasing workload. Exhausted as eight hours a day no longer seems to be enough and working overtime is more the rule than the exception. Struggling to find the time and mindset to focus on things that really matter to me, and to maintain a balanced mind, body and soul. Sometimes all you can do is to light a candle, stretch your body and empty your mind. 🕯
