Let’s quickly talk about summer and staying on track! If you’re not on top of it, summer can be the ultimate “f$k it” opportunity. Sun, drinks, BBQs, breaks from work and the regular routine: and the reward for having made it though the academic year if you have a kiddo (or a few)! 😜 BUT. September eventually rolls around and often brings with it feelings of regret and remorse. I’m going to share a few tips over the next week (before I leave on my own summer holiday) about how you can make the best of your summer AND feel pretty great about all of it come September. My first tip is to stick to what currently works for you MOST of the time. Summer isn’t a “free for all”. Don’t allow your good habits to completely fall along the wayside! We all know from experience that our good habits are easy to lose but hard to get back! A healthy habit that I find easy to do and helpful stay on track are my protein smoothies. Sometimes they’re breakfast, but other times they might be lunch or even dinner. They check off my two biggest requirements for meals: they’re protein heavy (40 grams) and they’re satisfying! When I was little, my mom won an award for creativity from FamilyFun Magazine. 👇🏼 She had four little kids who could never decide what they wanted to eat for breakfast and desperately needed a way to speed things up. She typed up a checklist of kid-friendly breakfasts that took less than 10 minutes to make, printed out four copies, and had them laminated into makeshift menus. Every night before bed, she’d usher me and my siblings into the kitchen, hand us a dry erase marker, and let us check off what we wanted to eat in the morning. From then on, there were no more tantrums or arguments at the breakfast table. By eliminating the dreaded early AM decision making process, my mom turned an overwhelming everyday task into a fun routine that made for more productive mornings. It actually worked so well that she submitted the idea to her favorite magazine and was featured in the next issue. 👑 It’s one of the not-so-secret keys to lasting behavior change. Simplifying the decision making process paves the way for keystone habits to develop, which means more automation, less cognitive effort, and a greater likelihood that you'll keep them up long term. It's all about something called keystone habits 🗝️ A keystone habit is like the first domino that sets off a chain reaction of positive actions. For me, that habit is moving my body. Whether it's a morning run, a gym session, or some yoga or pilates. It kickstarts my day and sets me up for success🏃‍♀️💪 On days that I exercise everything else just falls into place: 🌞 Focus and concentration: My mind is sharper, my work is more productive, and I'm more solution-focused. ⚡️ Improved energy: I have more energy and oomph during the day. My mood is upbeat as I achieve more. 🥗 Healthy eating: I make better food choices throughout the day, which fuels my body and mind. 😴 Quality Sleep: I sleep more soundly, waking up refreshed and ready to do it all again. We all have construction zones in our lives and careers. Zones where we are doing heavy lifting to break new ground in projects, organisations, in our own limitations or personal growth... Zones where the ground is dug up, it's a mess and the path is blocked right now. This is a natural part of the process. But...we also need to alternate these construction zones with zones of peace, joy and ease. Zones where we can recharge. When the going is tough, the answer is not always lean in and try harder. The answer is not always push through and then you can rest. The answer just might be, get out of the construction zone, lift your head and look at the view. Remind yourself of the vision, and why you are doing the work in the first place. Come back refreshed and reinvigorated with a new perspective and mindset. This may seem like common sense to you (or not), but so often there is a gap between common sense and common practice in our lives. This wisdom comes to you courtesy of my morning walk when after days of rain, wading through a construction zone and even climbing over a barrier, I was rewarded with this view. Of course this simple wisdom is not new. But the daily act of getting outside in nature never ceases to ground me and remind me in new and surprising ways. I used to hate running. I wanted to like it - I admired people who would just put in their running 👟 and go. But I couldn’t get out of my own head when I tried: ‘are we there yet?’ Played on repeat so I could ✅ off my list and know that I had burned calories for the day.
