Just because I had to learn ways to protect myself as kid doesn't mean I should continue doing the same things now as a grown man. Yet, that is what I did for a very long time without knowing. Just like you & countless number of other men (& women) I can raise my hand to almost each of these survival tactics listed on this post. What stands out the most for me was how easily self-sacrifice came for me. I remember growing up & giving up my need to play with my friends after school, joining high school sports teams & a list of other things. I gave all that up because I didn't want to create more issues between my parents. I didn't want to inconvenience my dad & have him freak out at me. I just hid in my grandparents house & did whatever was more convenient for my parents. Last year I had an inner child therapy session that uncovered how much of this self sacrifice as a kid impacted me. The emotions I had been storing inside of me without realizing it was incredible... and exhausting to release. We all had to do things as kids to survive. The issues is that we often continue behaving in the same ways as our inner child believes he is still trying to survive that same childhood. For me, knowing that these ways of being were attempts to feel safe & get some sort of needs met as a kid has helped me break these patterns of behavior. It's helped me realize that I am safe now as a grown man to ❌Prioritize myself ❌ No longer tune into the emotions of others to stay safe ❌ Share my truth even if it causes conflict ❌ Say NO ❌ Be myself even if others don't align , accept or agree with me. The same is true for you. Being indecisive is often less about uncertainty & more about your inner child. Your inner child thinks staying silent or invisible keeps him safe from harsh words, neglect, or the unpredictable storms of anger. Without fully realizing it, I had placed my entire well-being in her hands... emotionally, physically, mentally. That's a responsibility that many men with codependent patterns place on their partner. Making her my entire world wasn't & isn't healthy or fair. This wasn’t just unfair; it was unsustainable. It burdened her with constant pressure & left me acting like an uncapable & helpless man. This year we will celebrate 20 years of marriage. I have no doubt that if I didn't break out of my codependent patterns & we didn't step into more of an interdependent relationship then we wouldn't be here, together. Now, we're in this together, sharing responsibilities evenly and offering support without overwhelming each other. Each of us invests time in our own hobbies and well-being as much as possible. We make it a point to have open & honest conversations about our needs, desire & what we're not okay with. I've got the emotional skills & tools to be there for myself which has led her to lean on me for that emotional support as well. It's a work in progress & we look to get better. That version of Gang Starr consisted of MC Keithy E. (aka Guru) and DJ 1, 2 B-Down. When the group failed to make a mark, it disbanded and only Guru soldiered on under the name Gang Starr. As fate would have it, a young unknown producer from Houston had sent Guru a tape of beats. Guru liked what he heard and the two met up. That producer was, of course, the legendary DJ Premier. The rest is history.... With Brooklyn as their adopted home town, Guru and Premo went to work. In just two weeks, they completed their debut, “No More Mr. Nice Guy”. As men, we often carry the weight of societal and family expectations on our shoulders. We're taught to be strong, reliable, and always there for others, no matter what. And yeah, that can be a heavy burden to bear. There is no doubt about that. The issue is that some of us men have fallen into codependent & people pleasing patterns. ❌️ We're constantly trying to manage other people's feelings and reactions. ❌️ We get so caught up in trying to please everyone else that we forget about the man in the mirror & what we need to do for ourselves. ❌️ We find ourselves stuck in this cycle where we play the victim, blaming our upbringing or circumstances for our inability to take full responsibility for our lives. Even if we haven’t realized or owned up to playing the victim, it has contributed to feelings of powerlessness. Playing the victim takes away our autonomy & stunts any sort of personal growth. If you're nodding along & feeling like I'm talking about you, then I can almost guarantee you that you've forced other people to pick up the slack. Your personal responsibilities have now been passed onto your wife or girlfriend, your friend, parent, or co-worker. Of course, we can have some help, but it's not right that you keep dropping the ball & someone else has to pick it up for you. Because here's the truth: when we take ownership of our own responsibilities, we lighten the load for everyone else. We become more reliable, more trustworthy, and more authentic in our relationships. Survival mode for a "Nice Guy" looks like handing over your autonomy so others can make you feel safe & secure. 🤢 It’s the sinking feeling in your gut when you think about voicing your opinion, feelings, or needs. Choosing to stay silent as you fear that others will get upset or it will jeopardize your relationship with them. 😬 It's your inability to take a stand & be your own man because you need others to validate & affirm your value. Otherwise, you crumble & can’t function. 😍 You might find yourself clinging to relationships or roles that give you a sense of security & belonging, even if they are toxic & cause you more stress than anything else. 📢 This all came from being programmed to be a "good boy" for your mom & dad growing up. You feel powerless because you’re continuing to hand over your personal power to others as if they hold the key to your survival. When in reality, you’re no longer that boy who needs someone else to keep you alive. In order for you to go from survival mode to thriving, you need to: ✅ Teach your body & inner child that you’re safe even when others are upset or disappointed. ✅ Identify your core beliefs that have kept you feeling insecure, stuck placing others ahead of you & made you feel less than. ✅ Rediscover your needs, preferences, values, boundaries & emotions. Knowing what they are & learning how to honor them, be responsible for them. ✅ Become the parent to the scared boy inside of you. You get to connect with & take care of that boy. Giving him what he's always needed. When you cut ties with living in survival mode as the "Nice Guy," then you're finally able to: 🔥 Assert yourself in your life & relationships 🔥 Know your worth & trust in yourself 🔥 Take responsibility for your emotional world, happiness & well-being 🔥 Lead yourself & your family from a place of integrity & love 🔥 Be yourself authentically This is what is going to help you THRIVE. I blame being a middle child for being so easygoing and accepting. I never wanted to be a bother to anyone, so I have always been easily content and rather understanding. Even when I don't get my way. Reasonable is a word that has been used to describe me since a young age. The problem with being reasonable is that you are quick to accept anything and everything you are given. You are a magnet for bare minimum kind of people. People don't have to try around you because, well, you're just so understanding. 🙄 For me, this has meant being given breadcrumbs and the bare minimum in various forms of relationships and interactions. It has meant that I have sometimes given my all to people and received nothing in return when I asked of them. 😒 So, one of my New Year's resolutions is to be UNREASONABLE! 😤 I only want people in my life who are willing to give me the same energy I have to offer, and that's a whole lot... 💪 Although this post is just a log into my personal journey, feel free to use this as Monday motivation if you, just like me, are too understanding.
