It’s been a rainy day today but it hasn’t stopped us getting out and about. We set off this morning from Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Whitby. Not many people fancied it though with the weather - very quiet train. Once we got to Whitby we had some food and went to the Whitby Marine Discovery Centre where we learnt about marine life and also about lobsters. Naturally on our return journey the rain stopped but we didn’t care - another great railway themed day! My last day in North Yorkshire yesterday & of course my humans chose the North Yorkshire Moors Railway trip, it being sooooo cold up here. We started at Pickering & went all the way to Whitby, 24 miles, you can get off & look at all the other stations on the way if you wish. We checked out Grosmont but you can also stop at Goathland to see the station where the first Harry Potter movie was filmed & it also appeared in the TV series Heartbeat. Today is #EarthDay and we want to shine a spotlight on our fantastic Lineside Conservation team. 🌸🦗 Spring is a busy time of the year for them, with surveys taking place for birds, butterflies, bats, and vegetation. During spring, there’s lots to keep an eye out for in terms of flora and fauna at the NYMR. Glimpse a flurry of primroses starting in March and building through April - you can even see these in the stations. If you look closely, you will see the bright, bold gold of the marsh marigolds in the ditches, the white and pink blossoms of hawthorn trees and the yellow catkins on the hazel. A keen eye might also see the white flowers of the wild garlic and bluebells in the woods. As well as the sights, you can hear birds calling everywhere, and if you stop still anywhere in our stations and listen you will hear them. It's a lovely time to stop and catch where you are to fully appreciate it. 🦅

I met up with two mature off road cyclists at the Goathland railway station yestarday. They had stopped at the station cafe for a coffee on the tour of the North Yorkshire Moors. Whitby on a traditional wet and miserable Easter Monday. We got the steam train from Pickering to Whitby. We stayed on board and the train made the return trip 20 mins later. “We’re excited to announce that we’re working with US based railroad engineering and mechanical contractor, FMW Solutions to convert the historic and iconic steam locomotive ‘Dame Vera Lynn’ from coal to oil. 🚂 This will be the first full-size steam locomotive oil conversion in the U.K. since the end of steam, and it is a crucial step forward in ‘future-proofing’ the busiest heritage railway in the country.” In other words, many folks are too ignorant to realize that this could potentially save the Heritage scene in the UK from a future coal crisis.
