Do you know your bog plants? Or rather your moorland plants? Bogs that are in good condition are incredibly rich habitats. In the valley mires and blanket bogs of our uplands we can find many incredible plants if we look hard enough (and don’t mind getting a bit wet)! Plants like bog bean, bog asphodel, bog pimpernel, and then there’s all the mosses and the grasses and rushes and on and on 🤩 Sadly our bogs aren’t in great condition. For example less than 1% of Dartmoor’s blanket bogs are functionally intact meaning less carbon storage, less biodiversity in plants and insects and birds and mammals. Errwood Hall > Shining Tor 📍🗺 TP5950🚩 Elevation - 1833 ft 🆙️ Errwood Hall was built in the 1830s by Samuel Grimshawe, a wealthy Manchester businessman, and was occupied by the Grimshawe family for the next hundred years. The hall was the centre of a thriving estate of over 2,000 acres, consisting of several farms, a school, the Cat and Fiddle Inn, a private coal mine and the hamlet of Goyt's Bridge. Stockport Corporation bought the estate in 1930 to build the Fernilee Reservoir and for a while Errwood was used as a Youth Hostel, but in 1934 the Hall was dismantled for reasons of pollution along with the other thirteen farms and cottages on the estate. As a tea lover, I have been fascinated by Aunt Branwell’s teapot for a while. I was pleased to see it had been moved from the cabinet in the kitchen to the new exhibition downstairs, so it was easier to see it for myself. China has decreased its Treasuries holdings from $849 billion to $775 billion between the beginning of Q2 2023 and Q2 2024, reaching its lowest holdings since 2009. Other countries let go of small amounts of Treasuries holdings over the last quarter, with India selling $1.4 billion, Brazil unloading $1.2 billion, and Saudi Arabia shedding $0.3 billion. The new data come as Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Russia and China have almost completely stopped using the dollar in their mutual trade. According to Lavrov, more than 90% of settlements between the countries are now carried out in their own national currencies, with their economic cooperation accelerating “despite persistent attempts by Western countries to prevent this,” as per Bloomberg.
