Nestled in the hills above Alba, with these spectacular views across to the mountains and Monviso from the terrace at breakfast. Fabulous food from Chef Guido, from playful yet perfectly tecnical execution of tomato terrine through to classic pasta and delicious guinea fowl. But the staff are why so many of their guests come back year after year. From Valentina and her smiling team at reception, the incredibly knowledgeable Nicola as Sommelier, Guido and his kitchen crew, Director Mauro steering it all quietly behind the scenes, Elena with her team at the bar dispensing much needed pick me ups and digestifs, and always cheerful Maia with her colleagues at breakfast. Usually am in Piemonte in the autumn when it's white truffle season, but this week enjoyed taking a group of private clients to discover the beauty of the Langhe with wild flowers & poppies dancing in the vineyards against cerulean skies. But truffles were still on our menu, albeit black summer truffles at the fabulous Enoclub in Alba. The bosky notes the perfect foil for the already iconic 2016 Don Fiorino from @produttoridelbarbaresco - what an amazing multi layered wine. Fourth time had the privilege of drinking this Riserva wine, and seduced every time. One other of our wine choices really shone, as paired with selection of alpine cheeses from the region - Freisa 2008 from Mascarello. Restaurants are so much more than just about the food. The staff are equally important when choosing where to eat. Nowhere more so than at one of my favourite restaurants in the world, Osteria dell'Arco in Alba. Was in Piemonte this week with clients, so a relaxed supper there was essential part of our tour. The fabulous Maurizio and his team in the kitchen create delicious, irresistible, honest food - the tajarin with 40 egg yolks, as always, perfect! Though the creamy chocolate & hazelnut dessert drew forth a lot of appreciation too. Whilst Monica and her team FOH, ensure everything runs smoothly, always smiling and friendly, with seemingly effortless efficiency. A plethora of wines arrived, but for me (despite there also being v nice Barolo & Barbaresco on the table as well), star wine was the Pelaverga from Cantina Massara di Burlotto. A native red variety not often seen outside the region, delightfully lighter in structure, with bags of red fruit with touch of white pepper. Quite simply the prefect evening. Mangi & Bevi, a Sicilian Street Food, of pancetta (or streaky bacon stretched out), wrapped around spring onions and grilled till crisp. Also, as a rift on Piemontese peppers, Cook peppers with garlic & thyme slowly till soft & catching colour, melt in some anchovy fillets and serve with some burrata (room temperature), & pugliese bread rubbed with garlic. Am sceptical of "novelty" advent calendars, but this coffee focused one that I bought for him from @pactcoffee is awesome! A different sachet of coffee each day, from various countries, various beans etc. Great way to discover the diversity of coffee. PJ make ours in a trad Italian @bialetti Moka pot, obviously served black to appreciate the aromas. Today's despite name of Buenos Aires is actually grown in Colombia by Maria & Jose Ramon from an apparently climate change resistant variety, Cenicafe 1. (Each pack has short info card). Beautifully fragrant, lightly toasted but depth of aroma nonetheless, which surprised me as usually like a darker roast.
