Following on from Wine Fact Wednesday here is a delicious red wine blend from Slovenia, which tastes superb & is great value. Another wine from @solariswines - we are continuing to showcase their wines, because we thoroughly enjoy the variety & quality & they represent the luxury, choice & diversity available to enjoy at our events. ✅ The Name – Goli Breg, 2020, Fedora Vineyard, Vipava, Slovenia, 2020, 13.5% abv, RRP £23:00 ✅ The Wine. I rate this highly, a red blend made in a Bordeaux style, using 45% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon & 25% of Refosco - a grape local to Slovenia & Northeast Italy. Rofesco adds depth & complexity with high tannins & acidity in a medium body. Equally as smooth as a Bordeaux, the wine was rich, full of both red & black fruit – cherries, plums & blackcurrant, but many other flavours, like smoke, dried herbs & coffee. Not like anything I have tased I thoroughly enjoyed & certainly a food wine. I paired with a new dish of Rose Harissa spiced beef mince & roasted aubergines, perfect with the smokiness & herbal character. Yet again this wine has so much to offer & I know will be a big hit at future events! Table on the terrace overlooking the vines in this fascinating wine region that criss cross between Slovenia into NE Italy. Goose Prosciutto was bursting with flavour. Light pillows of Gnocchi in a Capon ragu followed by Pork Wellington with rosemary purée and ending on an irresistible deconstructed (not normally a term I like to see on a menu), apple strudel. Behind the fabulously quirky labels at @edisimcic_wines hide some world class wines, full of stylish polish yet with character. Tasting their wines from Goriska Brda region, on the Slovenia border with Italy, wines in flights of two to compare, the Rebula's were fascinating with 8 years difference in vintage between 2022 and the 2014. The Malvazija showed lovely herbal notes and purity. Their Tokata, in '21 and' 17 versions were stunning with undernotes of fennel, but great depth & complexity. As for the two Sauvignon, Kozana and Fojana, both incredible in own style - finesse but full of energy, linear purity that was incredible. Spectacular range of wines. One part of Karamira’s philosophy is to focus not only on Central- and Eastern European wines, but also trade mainly wines made from local grapes. In a recent conversation about this with Miha Kelhar @keltis_wines, he said to me “I understand the idea, but I don´t agree with it.” Next thing I get from Miha is a bottle of his Merlot. Not exactly an indigenous Slovenian grape. I took the bottle to Spain to drink it with my sister, whose wine life is more classic than mine. Needless to say, we both were more than happy with this cold-climate Merlot. It has everything you wish from a Merlot and more. Intense red fruit on the palate, combined with soft tannins and on top if it a wonderfully refreshing acidity giving the wine the perfect balance. Parabéns, Miha @keltis_wines! 🍷🍷 SANCTUM Wines, Slovenia 🍷🍷 @vina_sanctum One of the finds of the WHOLE year so far, if not longer.... @ollyshaw_winemaker and I explored trade shows early on in the year and we came across probably our favourite Pinot Noir and Chardonnay completely by chance! Sanctum Wines is a small family owned winery based in Stajerska, Slovenia. On the hills above the town of Loce, it dates back to winemaking from Carthusian monks in the 12th century. Minimal intervention wine making, on steep marl and clay soil slopes, they produce some INCREDIBLE wines. Depicted in the photo are only some of the range, however the ones I wish to give a shout out to are: - 🍷Chardonnay - ferments in new and used Slovenian and French oak barrels. Maturation for 10-12mths on lees, bottled without filtration. Booom - hits you with apples, apricots, hint of creaminess and lovely balance of acidity. - 🍷Chardonnay Prestige - best vintages only. Again the same amount of time in oak, but this ooooooooozes elegance. White pear and palle yes but integrated with oak , complex mouth-feel and lively acidity. OH MY ...... Next up - no rest for the wicked I know....get your palates ready.... - 🍷Pinot Noir time! Hand picked, destemmed, small % of whole bunches. Natural yeast ferment, in French oak barriques for 12-18mths. No filtration. Booom once more! Ruby, elegant, think cherries, smooth acidity, firm tannins, plums and a hint of rich coffee. - 🍷Pinot Noir Prestige. Only best years. This is EXPLOSIVE! Powerful structure mixed with elegance, it is fresh but full bodied and really mature red fruit notes for a pinot. Oh can I please have the bottle.....WOWSERS! Incredible wines, recommend trying and importing these - truly are outstanding.
