History and innovation in Valpolicella Tedeschi is a family that is known as vine-growers and wine producers since the 17th century in Pedemonte di Valpolicella. It was only in the 1960s though, that Lorenzo Tedeschi, the father of Antonietta, Sabrina, and Riccardo, decided to start to vinify grapes separately. In particular, he decided to source grapes from their Monte Olmi vineyard to produce one of the first Valpolicella cru wines. Today, @tedeschiwines winery is one of the Famiglie Storiche in Valpolicella and they have perfected their focus on making single-vineyard Amarone della Valpolicella wines. Not only Monte Olmi but also, for example, Maternigo and La Fabriseria (I tasted their 1995 La Fabriseria Amarone a couple of years ago. I then got to bring it home and had a great Amarone evening with friends. 🍷). For the last 10 years, they have also invested in research to look closer at the Maternigo vineyards and the Classical area to understand the characteristics of the soil. At Vinitaly, I visited their stand together with @bhcdracicot9919 of the Barrel Hunter Club and we got to taste some of their wines, also older vintages. Such as 🍷 La Fabriseria Amarone della Valpolicella 2016. The epitome of elegance, complexity, and structure. 🍷 Capitel Monte Olmi Amarone della Valpolicella 2008. Characteristically woth herby and greener notes, maquis combined with elegance and structure. Now, I feel like soon opening up an older vintage of Capitel Monte Olmi that I have at home, together with a friend who is originally from Veneto. 😀🍷 #grapevineadventures #barrelhunterclub #amaronedellavalpolicella #veneto #amarone #vinitaly #winewriter #valpolicellalovers

🌞🐦 Spring returns this week, and once again we can rejoice in sunshine, birdsong, and lazy afternoons spent on the terrace with a glass of wine – especially since we can do this not only on weekends but also exceptionally in the middle of the week (well, at least in Eastern Europe). So, hello May! • • • • • • Honestly, I've been waiting for this upcoming month since January because it's full of new adventures, new destinations, wines, sparklings, who knows, maybe even new friends, so all kinds of wonders. Villa Diana Chianti with the rules of the DOCG classification (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). Each bottle has controlled production methods (controllata) and a guaranteed quality of wine (garantita). Wine produced by Casa Vinicola Poletti S.r.l. @casa_vinicola_poletti_ The Poletti Winery was founded in 1928 by Aurelio Poletti near the first suburbs of Imola (Italy). Dry red wine Villa Diana Chianti made from the grape Sangiovese 👁️ Medium ruby. 👃 Weakly expressed, the nose has notes of ginger and dried cherries. 👅 The taste has a pronounced bitterness of young walnuts and unripe black currants. 👉 - 8,0 score #winecrossing #followmewine #wine #sommeliere #winelovers #winetasting #winetime #winewriter #winetourism #winestagram #wineworld #winelife #winestagram #somelier #wineinfluencer #instawine #winestagram #sommelier #ilovewine #winetime #winenot #wineportfolio #winelist #luxurywine #luxurylifestyle #wineonfleek #worldwinemoments #winemoments #vinealove

🥩 Why are vegetables harder to pair with wine than say a steak❓ 🔗 Link in Bio https://www.nataliemaclean.com/blog/videos/wine-pairing-vegetable-match-salad-guide/ 🍾 With steak, you have protein which loves to dance with the tannin in red wine, that furry mouth feeling you get from eating walnuts. 🥗 Those we have here are terrific. They’re bone dry, with lots of crisp acidity so they don’t end up tasting sweet or awful when you drink them with artichokes or other spring greens. 🌿 Asparagus also has cynarin, though far less of it than artichokes. Its more troublesome compound is mercaptan, which can also produce a bad smell like rubber or gun flint in wine. 🌸 When it comes to salads, wines with a floral character, like this Niagara Riesling do well with simple field greens, for the same reason that edible flowers are used as a garnish. 💐 You can also pair a wine with salads that has a touch of sweetness like this Californian Moscato, again there are floral notes. 🔥 Red wines work when they start to grill our veggies: that charry, smoky flavour also acts as a bridging ingredient that allows for red wine to work, especially with a smoky Italian red wine like this one. 🥦 Do you pair your vegetables or salad with wine❓ Let me know in the comments 👇🏻 Cheers🥂, Natalie 🍷 PS Get my free "Ultimate Guide to Wine & Food Pairing" at: http://www.nataliemaclean.com/guide 🔗 Link is also in the bio ✉️ Or just DM me and ask for the guide! @vintage_trade @austrianwine @austrianwineusa @kimcrawfordwine @arterrawinescanada @nzwinegrowers @henryofpelham @fwmcan @oncraftwineries @winecountryont

California has been a leader in sustainable wine growing. According to California Certified Sustainable, 38% of California winegrape acres that they monitor are sustainable, and 188 Certified Wineries produce 202 million cases of wine (80% of California wine). That is remarkable and commendable. I have two bottles of Certified #Sustainable #PinotNoir wines from California: Cambria Estate Winery Julia's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022 and @lacremavineyard Monterey Pinot Noir 2022. Let me tell you about my first sips. La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir 2022 Appearance: A medium-intensity, consistent translucent garnet colour from the rim to the core. Nose: Quite aromatic. Medium-plus intensity aromas of smoky toasty raspberries, red plums, plus red fruit and sweet spices. Palate: This wine is dry, but has a fruity sweetness. Red fruit, raspberries, and red cherries. Light integrated smoky toastiness. It is smooth, soft and round. Almost mouth-filling. Medium acidity and light tannins. There is also a hint of violets and some candied red cherries with air. Finish: Medium-plus length finishing with light tannins. Smoky, tasty red fruit, a touch of candied cherries and some pepperiness on the finish. Cambria Estate Winery Julia's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022 Appearance: A clear, slightly deeper translucent garnet colour, compared to the La Crema Pinot Noir. Nose: Medium intensity, darker aromas of ripe red fruit, red cherries, dried herbs, light oak toastiness, and sweet spices. Palate: Like the La Crema, this wine is dry but has fruity sweetness. You get sweet cherries and darker, riper red fruit flavours, plus sweet spices. This wine has a medium-plus body and smooth on the palate, but does have a medium tannic backbone for some structure. I also pick up dried herbs and a touch of oak on the palate. This wine has some nice acidic tension. Finish: The flavour fades quickly but then lingers for a while. It finishes with flavours of red fruit, sweet cherries, and toast, plus a touch of pepperiness. Medium tannins on the finish. Stay tuned for my full tasting notes, including decanting, on mywinepal.com. @california.wines @summitfinewines #winewriter #somm

🧀 What are some mouthwatering wine and cheese pairings❓ 🔗 Link in Bio https://www.nataliemaclean.com/blog/videos/pairing-wine-cheese-chart/ 🧀 Certain pairings in life indicate that the world is a good place: peanut butter and jam, chocolate syrup and ice cream, wine and cheese. 🍽️ The separate ingredients enhance one another: each tastes better together than it would on its own. 🎉 And the good news is that wine and cheese can be enjoyed with little preparation. The combination is perfect for any event, from informal picnics and snacks to cocktail soirées and dinner parties. 🌿 Thornbury Sauvignon Blanc – zesty herbal flavours are perfect with goat cheese. Perrin & Fils Reserve is rich round with spice and pepper and terrific with the gouda. 🍇 Fonseca Port is ideal with stilton because the strong flavours go so well together. 🥜 We have an assortment of jellies, nuts, olives to give a variety of tastes that complement both the cheese and wines. 🍾 I’d pair the creamy brie with the Strewn Riesling because the racy citrus acidity of the wine cuts like a knife through the richness of the cheese. 🍷 Wine and cheese seem to be a match made in gastronomic heaven for many reasons. Both are made from fresh liquids—grape juice and milk respectively—that are preserved and fermented by a natural agent: yeast for wine and bacteria for cheese. 🥂 Do you like pairing wine and cheese❓ Let me know in the comments 👇 Cheers🥂, Natalie 🍷 PS Get my free "Ultimate Guide to Wine & Food Pairing" at: http://www.nataliemaclean.com/guide 🔗 Link is also in the bio ✉️ Or just DM me and ask for the guide! @nzwinegrowers @airenimports @fonsecaport @fwmcan @winesofportugalcol @strewn_winery @dionysuswines @oncraftwineries @winecountryont @grapegrowersont @wineriesofNOTL @mywinecountry @reifestatewinery @henryofpelham

𝑾𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔 Suvereto and Val di Cornia is a wine area in Tuscany with a unique history, terroir, and winemaking tradition. I am discovering more about Suvereto this weekend on a press tour organized by the recently reformed Suvereto consortium. It is an area with only 820 ha under vine but with niche wineries such as Tua Rita, Petra, Bulichella, Tenuta Casadei, Poggio Argentiera, Monte Solaio, and many more. The area is characterized by the winds blowing in mainly from the sea which dries up the vineyards. The area is characterized by the winds blowing in mainly from the sea which dries up the vineyards. This give rise to fresh and salty wine. Typical traits for the Suvereto and Val di Cornia wines. How could i have forgotten Viognier Day??? It’s my wine passion, the grape that put a fire in my heart. My first swirl, sniff, and sip thrilled me: how could a wine be so aromatic, with heady aromas of honeysuckle, apricot and flowers? I recounted my wine revelation in an entry to Jancis Robinson’s summer wine writing competition in 2018. While I didn’t take top honors, my piece was selected as a finalist and was featured on her site. (Link in bio.) That revelatory first bottle was a Condrieu from @domaineguigal but I’ve enjoyed many others since then. The two Viogniers featured here were also stunning, with the La Borry from @domainesaintamant made from grapes grown near the Dentelles de Montmirail in the Southern Rhône (a huge bargain, IMHO.) I serve it in summer with a homemade cheese and fresh corn soufflé. Pairing perfection! What happens when you keep a reasonably cheap wine for 11 years. Well, it gets better-ish. Smoother, more integrated tannins yes, but the fruit was lacking in the palette. Appearance: deep ruby to pale garnet at the rim. Minimal tears/legs, slow. Nose: lovely red fruit, touch of second fill oak. Palette: quite smooth, medium mouth feel, subtle red fruits, hints of white pepper on the finish, tannins well integrated. Decent. 3.5/5. #wine #winetasting #winewriter #writersofinstagram #adhdauthor #cotesdurhone

🫶 My personal favourites from the Hungarian Wine Summit ⬇ 🥂 Szóló (Tokaj): those who override people's prejudices about natural wines. And they go even further, as they cultivate the grapes biodynamically, so people approach these wines with at least double skepticism, but with them, everything seems to be just right. It's so true that I would say dry Tokaji has not brought me as much flavor richness as their Föld for a while now. I especially love to observe what they create because I was there at their first tasting - which I always remind Timi of, who always remembers it 😊 And their world enchanted me even at that first tasting. 🍷 Vida Wine Estate (Szekszárd): honestly, the Szekszárd wine region wasn't among my favorites until I discovered Vida wines. Wonderful, flawless, and elegant red wines, ranging from easy-drinking ones to those that emphasize terroir characteristics, like Lösz, for example. I photographed only the Bikavér, but all of them were very good. 🍾 Garamvári (Balaton): when the winemaker pours, you can be sure that the best sparkling wine will end up in the glass! For me, it was the Prestige Brut this time, the non-vintage vintage (haha, I remember: 2019! Although I won the title of the journalist who takes the fewest notes from the winemaker 😊) is my favorite; but I don't think the Furmint would disappoint anyone either. From grapes of Balaton, not Tokaj! 🍇 Samuel Tinon (Tokaj): as rare as a white raven, of course, it couldn't be missed! First, I tasted it, then looked at the vintage... and then tasted it again. Genius. Bordeaux doesn't know what it's missing. #hungarianwinesummit #tokaj #hungarianwines #balaton #winesofhungary #winetasting #wineglass #winewriter #winejournalist #journalist

A nomenclature after a legendary 19th century symbol of sustainable vineyards… Family established in 1895, Cheval Noir is one of the oldest properties on a unique plateau in Bordeaux, standing today as the jewel of Mähler-Besse - owners since the late thirties of last century. The rigorously selected grapes from 6 hectares in iconic Saint-Émilion shapes the attractive garnet 2019 vintage, flanking aromas of red fruits, cinnamon & elegant notes of oak. The silky tannins on the palate are noticeable with a smooth medium body unravelling insinuations of liquorice to finish. 1️⃣ Happy International Viognier Day! (April 26) Some Viognier facts? Why not …. 2️⃣ Viognier’s homeland is the northern Rhône and there, a super-expressive heartland is the region of Condrieu. Prices of Condrieu can be super-expressive too 🥴 3️⃣ Viognier can pack a punch with alcohol and has medium to low acidity, which wrap around a rich, silky mouthfeel. Aromas and flavours of peach, apricot, some spice and summertime flowers 4️⃣ Pronounce it like this - Vee-on-yay - though I have a friend who has never been able to say it - so instead asks if we can have a glass of Veronica 😟😀 5️⃣ Viognier is fantastic with spicy dishes - I love it with korma, with Thai and with Chinese - it also sips nicely with roast chicken. 6️⃣ In the northern Rhône, viognier is sometimes co-fermented with syrah. It adds floral notes to the red wines and, by some chemical magic, enhances syrah’s colour. 7️⃣ It’s only in the last few decades that viognier has stepped out of its French homeland into wine regions across the world. 8️⃣ Hurrah! with this Australian wine Yalumba Worthy Grounds Viognier 2021. Premium grapes from the Eden Valley are fermented and aged in old oak. The wine has flecks of ginger alongside stone fruit. Yum! At the end of 2023, the United States was home to 269 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). These are meant to denote a specific sense of place – and, arguably, quality. Winemakers see these boundaries as a key piece of their marketing message. However, when the AVAs cross regional political borders, does that impact consumers’ understanding of them and muddle any clarity that conversations about a sense of place and terroir hope to communicate? In my latest for @decanter I explore what this all means for winemakers -- Link In bio! 📸 : @bionicwines @lecole41 @delmas__sjrvineyard @therocksdistrict_ @wwvalleywine @wallawallawineries @cayusevineyards #cinderwine @idahowines #wine #winewriter #winewriting #AVAs #Pacificnorthwestwine #washingtonwine #oregonwine #idahowine #wallawalla #rocksdistrict #snakerivervalley

What are 5 Surprising Facts about Viognier❓ 🔗 Link in Bio https://www.nataliemaclean.com/blog/10-best-viognier-wines-to-buy-now-5-surprising-facts-about-viognier/ 📆 International Viognier Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April every year. 🤩 With a gold like colour, luscious tropical fruit tones and a full body to pull it all together, Viognier is a bon-viveur’s dream wine. 🍑 If done properly a good Viognier can be like a late summer walk through a peach orchard. Aromas permeating the warm thick air with pungent ripe fruit. 1️⃣. The original home of Viognier is believed to be Croatia, however, it found its first true home in the Northern Rhone appellation of Condrieu, thanks to Romans settlers. 2️⃣. The Northern Rhone region of France may have been Viognier’s first home, yet it almost went extinct there. In the 1960s, there were fewer than 25 hectares of Viognier planted in Condrieu. 3️⃣. Any Viognier grower is tenacious in my books because Viognier is notoriously difficult to grow. It is susceptible to disease. 4️⃣. Viognier may be great on its own, but it is also a team player. It is often blended with the red wine Shiraz/Syrah both to lend the wine more aromatics and to ironically to stabilize the red colour. 5️⃣. Try it with mildly spicy Thai curries, or rich seafood dishes like chowder. It can be a good partner for a mildly spicy pork dish, a foie gras terrine or even a Michelina salmon teriyaki if you are on a budget and would rather splurge on the wine than on the food. ✍🏻 Credit to Lesley Quinn of @stellarsomm Do you like Viognier❓ Let me know in the comments 👇 Cheers🥂, Natalie 🍷 PS Get my free "Ultimate Guide to Wine & Food Pairing" at: http://www.nataliemaclean.com/guide 🔗 Link is also in the bio ✉️ Or just DM me and ask for the guide! @internationalviognierday @calerawine

A blind tasting performed by wine professionals and critics with your own wine among the lineup is always a daunting prospect, but it's also a lot more meaningful and satisfactory when you get a great result as you know the wines have been benchmarked on their intrinsic merits. Wine writing legend Michael Cooper held a blind tasting of 12 New Zealand and international chardonnays in the $40 - 70 bracket and we are thrilled our Blank Canvas Reed Vineyard Chardonnay was recognised as the top and Michael's favourite wine of the tasting. ☆☆☆☆☆ "My favourite wine of the tasting was grown in the Waihopai Valley. Fragrant and refined, it is complex and savoury, with deep, citrusy, peachy flavours, mealy and biscuity notes, appetising acidity and a lasting finish. Very ageworthy." The 2022 vintage has long sold out but we have just released the impressive 2023 and it is now available on our website. Being very tightly allocated, we encourage you to get in early to avoid disappointment! #nzwine #nzfinewine #blankcanvaswines #nzchardonnay #Chardonnay #blindtasting #askforamw #appellationmarlboroughwine #winewriter #winereview #reedvineyard #blankcanvas #lovechardonnay

Thrilled to post about my first piece for @EaterNY, once more with Valerie Stivers. We have created a bunch of really good wine, food, travel and culture content over the past handful of years, collaboratively and individually. Don't take my word for it...check each of us out and decide for yourself. This is about the food scene in Newark's Ironbound. Some of you who follow me know I am a fan and supporter of Newark and its neighborhoods, having collaborated with different food and bev entities, done events for numerous companies and community organizations, and written a good amount about it, which is why I was asked to be on a panel next week discussing "Newark's Culinary Route." Check it out. Link is in my profile linktree. Support small independent restaurants, which is really the jist of the piece, and let Eater know you want more Garden State content, whoever provides it. And thank you to everyone who keeps introducing me to the great things happening and those doing the great things culturally throughout this city. #wine #winelover #foodlover #winewriter #foodwriter #eater #eaterny #newark #newarkdining #newarkfood #newarkironbound

* In the last few days, I’ve spent a good deal of time reflecting on the past. Don’t worry, my more recent past, not like back to my pre-puberty days; I’ve got my autobiography if you’re interested in going back that far. No, as you may have seen, I just recently eliminated my website HiitsDon4Wine.com after 9 years. In retrospect, I should have kept it one more year, then I could have had a slightly more honorable anniversary and sendoff. But why wait? I couldn’t tell you how many people visited my site versus my Instagram page, and Instagram is free! I don’t sell anything, except my books, and that came and went, although it’s still available on Amazon (one more sales push). Mostly, it all comes down to money, though it wasn’t that extravagant of a cost. It still feels like a sort of passing. Not of life, but of an era. The writing, structuring, and final presentation of oh so many posts. However, when I realized that I would be shutting down the website, I quickly found that there were alternate challenges using different formatting and presentation techniques I would have to master. Out with the old, in with the new. Change can be good! The one thing never to change, at least while I’m around and some doctor doesn’t tell me I have to quit drinking wine, is that I will continue to do what I love, drinking and writing about drinking, in that specific order. Stay tuned! Sometimes you don’t get that “Wow” sip your crave. Sometimes because the wine is just not that “Wow” wine however when you open up one of your favorite reliable sips and it happens it like a stake in the palette! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I will admit I have only experienced “corked” wine 🍷 very few times. So few times, guesstimating less than 1/2 dozen times, that I forgot there is “corked wine”. #Corked wine is #wine that is contaminated with TCA aka #trichloroanisole 🧬from moldy cork or wood. The wine aroma and taste is so foul that it can’t be enjoyed at all. Then there is the “rotten egg” 🥚 smell and the sour spiked ⚡️sip which can’t be confused as “cork taint” however is often characterized as such. The #rottenegg 🥚 smell occurs when there is too much sulfur introduced into the winemaking process. The smell most often described as rotten egg or burnt rubber or #skunk smells in your wine occurs when sulfur added in small amounts to almost all wine to stabilize it and it created a reactive reaction. 🚨ALERT: The #wine may be; might be; could be saved with a good few hours #decanting process to aerate the wine. This is what #MoWino forgot to send the life-rafting 🛟 decanter to the ⛑️rescue. With the smack of the 👃🏼 smell and tart of 👅taste, MoWino quickly poured down the sink in haste. Painful lesson to remember — #decant decant decant! Truth this was the 2nd smelly tart wine of this vintage from this favorite winery however the first fresh opening was ehh and ehh so moved passed it. This particular 2nd bottle was a gut and sharp reaction of disappointment — and a mistake MoWino will not make again. 🍷 Which wine would you pair with the traditional pretzel❓ 🔗 Link in Bio https://www.nataliemaclean.com/blog/videos/which-wines-pair-best-with-pretzels/ 🥨 In the 7th century, monks rewarded their students with baked bread in the shape of crossed arms, to symbolize prayer and the three holes representing the Holy Trinity. 🥯 Pretzels were originally called “bracellae” which is Latin for “little arms,” but were renamed to “pretiola” which meant little reward. 🏟️ The traditional pretzel is a stadium classic, whether we’re talking about a good old gladiator fight in the Roman Colosseum or a Blue Jays baseball game. 🥖 Hard pretzels are believed to be invented by German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania. The state produces 80% of pretzels consumed in the US. 🧀 With the great cheesey garlic flavour in these pretzels, I’d try this Austrian Gruner Veltliner. 🍾 Have you tried a wine and pretzel pairing❓ Let me know in the comments 👇 Cheers🥂, Natalie 🍷 PS Get my free "Ultimate Guide to Wine & Food Pairing" at: http://www.nataliemaclean.com/guide 🔗 Link is also in the bio ✉️ Or just DM me and ask for the guide! @mersoleilwines @thebacchusgroup @quailsgate @winesofbc @bcwas @beringervyds

🌏🍷 Australian Micro Terroirs 🌏🍷 One of the best masterclasses that I've seen this year came from @stuartleece and @corishmw A great look into some expressive grape varietals which really showed the complex nature from soil and location within Australia. Wines that we ran through consisted of: 🌏🍷Harewood Estate, Porongurup Riesling 2023 @harewoodestatewines 300m altitude, 45 yr old vines based on granite. This brought citrus, tropical, grassy notes with hints of lemon, lime and pink grapefruit. It had good acidity and years of ageing potential. 🌏🍷Harewood Estate Mount Barker Riesling 2023 220m altitude, developed fruit with further and more fuller tropical notes. A touch less acidity too which was interesting and diverse. Brilliant showcasing of Rieslings, one of my favourite white grape varietals! 🌏🍷Eisenstone 'Mattscheoss Vineyard Greenock SV901' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 @eisenstonewines 280m altitude Gentle pump overs, with some whole bunch. The aromatics are pretty intense, tannins were firm, with black fruits predominantly added with a touch of spice and good meaty, savoury notes to follow too on the back of the palate. 🌏🍷Eisenstone 'Hoffman Vineyard Ebenezer SV902' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 280-300m altitude Think blueberries, damsens and some bramble thrown in too. Mouth coating character with an element of creaminess too. It is so velvety and approachable though, a delightful wine. 🌏🍷 Eisenstone 'Becker Vineyard Konnunga SV907' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 Producing 1/2 tonne an acre. The aromatics of violets and black cherries are very evident. Tannins are layered and a little finer. Good freshness, vibrancy and NOT extensive spice here either. This is not my first Eisenstone tasting and I hope it won't be the last. Truly a great wine producer showcasing the diversity of soil type differences and altitude changes to perfect the art of winemaking. #australianwines #eisenstone #harewood #aussiewines #wineaus #aussiewine #winejudge #winewriter #sheffield #wineblog

I’ve hinted at some news coming from me, and now is the time for my big reveal: This week, I’m starting a new gig as senior correspondent for @newwinereview an incredibly exciting new media startup. It’s not often that an opportunity to build a brand-new publication comes along, especially in wine. I’m very excited about the things we’ll be doing at The New Wine Review, which has been in beta for several months. At NWR, we’ll be pushing wine writing in new, smarter, savvier directions, and I’m thrilled with what we have planned. I’ve made this decision because I want to expand the scale and depth of what I cover and write, and The New Wine Review will support that growth. I’m proud of what I’ve created with Everyday Drinking, now approaching its third anniversary, and I’m so grateful you’ve chosen to come along for the ride. But a one-person operation can only grow so much so fast, and the time has come to work with a team, and with more resources. I’ll be joining some great colleagues who’ve written and edited at the New York Times, Food + Wine, GQ, Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, Wine Spectator, and Los Angeles Magazine. @jonfine @possiblybrittany @saraakeene @que_syrahsarah @whattastesgood and our founder Zander Baron. Our talented group will be able to cover much more of the wine and spirits world than I can alone. Above all: The New Wine Review offers the sort of independence from the industry that’s essential for me. At NWR, we’re not getting involved with the pay-to-play shenanigans that have become commonplace in the wine business. My first pieces for The New Wine Review, live on the site today, include a report that asks “Is Spain the World’s Most Exciting Wine Country Right Now?” as well as a feature essay on the phenomenon of over-hyped “Vintages of the Century.” (I mean, how many “Vintages of the Century” has Bordeaux had in just the past two decades?). You even got a sneak preview last Friday of my article on Winter Whites. LINK BIO - come check it out! #wine #winelover #winemagazine #winewriter #winewriting

A huge thanks to all who came to my book launch last evening at @dauntbooks Holland Park. It was such a joyous and happy celebration and it was wonderful to see old and new friends, colleagues, wine people, my publisher Michael Dwyer @hurstpublishers and agent Philippa Sitters @phi11y @dgaliterary To see copies of “Italy in a Wineglass” arranged in such a lovely window display and to sign so many books throughout the evening was exciting and also heartwarming - I felt so much support and love in the room. The wines flowed freely, with Charlie from Hurst ensuring glasses were topped up - the white a Verdicchio di Castelli di Jesi from the Monte Schiavo cooperative (Verdicchio, one of Italy’s most characterful Italian native white grape varieties, features in three different chapters - the Triumph of Christianity, The Economic Miracle, and Donne e Vino, and I also write about the importance of cooperative wineries in my chapter Ideals, Economics and Heroic Wines); the red was Campofiorin an iconic wine produced by my good friends at @masiwines , a wine that features in my Merchants of Venice chapter. Writing, whatever the subject or genre, is most usually a solitary and lonely activity. Though this book involved extensive travels over many years, as well as countless visits to wine producers where I enjoyed some fabulous wine tastings and hospitality, the actual act of writing, transferring thoughts, information, feelings and emotions into words is an always private process. We live in the darkness of our own minds so fully and obsessively that when a book finally appears it can be dazzling and we hardly know how it will be received. Last night was special because I felt surrounded by people who matter and care, most of all my whole family (including baby Sol). So thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who came along. #writersofinstagram #author #italianwine #italianhistory #winewriter @circleofwine @vinitalyinternational @italianwinepodcast #winefoodtravel #italy

Could a Crémant producer be as iconic as a famous Champagne House? Loire producer, Langlois could most certainly be the answer, fast becoming one of the leading names in the Crémant market and I’ll tell you a secret 🤫.… they are owned by Bollinger! Last week I joined @mentzendorff_co at @bobbobricard for a Langlois Chenin Blanc masterclass tasting our way through sparkling, still and sweet wines over a rather scrumptious lunch. I’ve been a fan of the Langlois Crémant for a good few years now and will always recommend it to anyone looking for great value traditional method sparkling wines which are always aged for a minimum of two years on lees. Newly launched this year is quite possibly my favourite from the range- Langlois Cadence Extra Brut 2017, it’s elegant, clean and crisp whilst still having lovely fruit character. I also loved the still Domaine Langlois Chateau Vieilles Vignes 2019- old vine Chenin, fermented in barrel with an additional 10 months of lees ageing. This is a great Burgundian alternative, such a beautifully complex and layered wine which I will definitely be investing in and was paired with indulgent lobster Thermidor mac and cheese 👌. #PressforLanglois #pressinvite . . . . . . . . . . #cremant #cremantdeloire #loirevalleywines #loirewines #frenchwine #sparklingwine #wineoftheday #cheninblanclover #Cheninblanc #langlois #frenchwinelover #winetasting #wineanddine #londonlife #londondiaries #winelife #winestyle #wineenthusiast #wineblogger #winewriter #londoncity #wineguide #winetips #whitewine #winefluencer #winepairing

I started reading it on the tube journey home and was transported - can't wait to carry on reading it. Many congratulations, Marc! Domaine Marc Morey - Chassagne-Montrachet (Rouge) 2017 Great aromas of red fruit and a hint of black fruit, along with herbal/spicy notes and a slightly smokey and earthy undertone. Good acidity with some ripe and soft tannines. More ripe and fruit-forward than some other Burgundy Pinots I’ve had. On this date, Shakespeare was purportedly born in 1564 and on this date, purportedly died in 1616, not the best way to spend a birthday. It also happens to be World Book Day. While I won't claim to be bookish, I am bookish-ish and a real Shakespeare fan. In all of his plays, there is some reference or allusion to potent potables or consuming them. I pull this book out from time to time as a reference guide to the Bard's many rounds of mentions of #wine, #beer, #ale, #whisky, #brandy, and of course, #sack! #winelife #winelover #winewriter #shakespeare #shakespeareandalcohol #worldbookday #worldbookday2024 #booklover #bookishish

#SparklersYouShouldBeDrinking Hey there my bubbly lovers, I have a few questions for you: Planning to take a rec from #TheSipSchedule (the live link is in my bio) wine festival list and attend the Bordeaux Wine Festival in Bordeaux, France at the end of June and need to give your palate a little pre-training? Wanting to get a head start on celebrating Sauvignon Blanc Day on May 3rd? Looking for a new bubbly to try? Well, as far as I’m concerned, any one of those serves as the perfect excuse, ahem, REASON for a little *exploratory sipping*—and OF COURSE I have a recommendation already waiting in the wings: Presenting the Jean-Louis Trocard Cuvée Tradition Cremant de Bordeaux! The thing that makes exploring (and drinking!) bubbles from different regions all over the globe so cool is the variety of varietals used in the various blends. Though it’s made in the traditional style, the Trocard Brut’s blend is said to combine blend Semillon and/or Sauvignon Blanc + Cabernet Franc, which gives a dynamic flavor profile to the wine. “Its nose is elegant and complex with notes of white flowers, sweet almond and marjoram, with just a touch of wild strawberry. In mouth, a beautiful attack with a creamy mousse and pleasing balance. Initial aromas are carried forward to the palate; excellent persistence, with brioche-like notes on the finish.” — Napaphan IMO, this sparkler is just so dang delightful to drink—fesh, light, and elegant, but in a laid back, quaffable way. It’s perfect for poolside, sipping, as an apéritif, or pairing with meat & cheese boards. And at a price point of just under $20, do you really need any more convincing? I didn’t think so. 😉 Any Crémant lovers out there? Are you a Bordeaux babe? I’d love to know if you’re intrigued to try or have already tried this bottle. Cheers, y’all! 🥂 #imagedescription Davon wearing a turban and sunglasses while drinking sparkling wine #CremantdeBordeaux #bordeauxwines #FrenchSparklingWine #ClinkDifferent #winewriter #sparklingwinepro #sparklingwine #sparklingwinelovers

* Had a Hankerin' Hankering, urge, yearning, or better yet, thirst, was the way I would describe how I felt after pouring at a recent wine tasting. For many a year, I have been in love with a particular grape, so much so, that I once decried it as the “next big grape!” Alas, that was not to be, and my hopes were dashed as the grape never ascended to the heights I had hoped for. For years, it has languished between obscurity and animosity, finding it difficult to extol the virtues that are “SYRAH!” I hope to reverse those sentiments with today’s wine. After pouring an excellent Syrah from Beckman at the tasting, I could feel my taste buds come to life. That need to feel dark rich fruit and mellow tannins glide across my palate and open my senses to an almost indescribable flavor and feeling. Returning home that night I knew I needed to take action and immediately choose a wine for the following night’s dinner. Thankfully, I had several wines to choose from. As one of the oldest in my cellar, it wasn’t that difficult of a choice. The Collaboration Series, now discontinued, was designed to bring together the best of fruit, in this case from Ciel du Cheval vineyard, and various winemakers, Mark McNeilly for this wine, to produce a Northern Rhone-styled release made from 100% Syrah from their Red Mountain Estate vineyard in Washington State. Having the benefit of a dozen years to transform itself into this lavish wine, once poured I knew I had “chosen wisely.” The wine begins with full deep dark red fruit alongside rich dried black fruit and tannins that have mellowed to create a softness to an otherwise massive wine, finishing with a touch of spice that tingles towards a long finish. The wines of this winery are a “Force” to be reckoned with. Having had a number of their Estate wines, I can attest that even if Syrah isn’t your thing, it should be, they have other varietals as well, most of them garnering reviews in excess of 90 points, many much higher. So when a hankerin’ comes over you, remember Force Majeure, French for “Superior Force!” Cheers
