Something different than my usual, but it's been on my mind a lot lately. 2024 ➜ 1984 After finally reading Orwell's 1984, there are so many parallels to our current day...where "war is peace" and "ignorance is strength". We were too busy worrying about it coming from communist ideology that we didn't realize it could come from anywhere. It seems that it's ultimately about power and control. It doesn't seem to matter who it is in power or who has the control... (Does power always corrupt?) It's hard feeling so powerless in a world that's so interconnected and yet denies that connection. How do we come back from this? . . . #art #1984 #orwell #illustration #artist #ncartist #raleighartist #morrisvilleartist #durhamartist #arttherapy #thoughts

Donna's reading 👓 Donna's decided to read 500 books by the end of this cat year. Decision was made suddenly, one minute ago to be exact, as she got fed up with this weather that keeps all of her dear friends (both of them) inside, lack of mouses, birds and butterflies. As she loves to explore, learn and get easily bored of artificial toys that, as she says, insult her intelligence and hunter skills, Donna will give books a try - I can not express how happy that makes me feel, especially as has been so long since I have met a reading soul. Not to be mistaken, Donna is not doing it to please me, noo. She wants to read 500 books only to prove that book is afterall better to be sit upon than read. First book she's picked from my bookshelf is Orwell's Animal farm, of couse. Donna was expecting it to be a story about cat's superiority and the delights of warm cow's belly and sweet chicken meat - in which l, she said, could find some satisfaction ... this way, after done with reading she just closed the book with her elegant fluffy paw and meaowed : "Miss Pig, a snack, please, ... now." Guess, that' s my new nickname. #cat #blackcat #reading #orwell #animalfarm #catlife @_george_orwell_

A pokój 101 czeka. I z chęcią przyjmie kolejnych ludzi, by oczyścić ich z myślozbrodni. "1984" to jedna z lektur, które uważam za obowiązkowe do przeczytania przez każdego. Absolutny must read. Czytajcie więc i podzielcie się ze mną wrażeniami z pobytu w Oceanii. Czekam, czuwam i jak Wielki Brat - patrzę. SHORT READS THAT PACK A PUNCH (CLASSICS) I'm usually partial to longer books (more time to build an intricate plot and develop complex characters), but when I do step out of my preference bubble and pick up a novella, I've found a number of gems. - Siddhartha by Herman Hesse: 122 pages (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - The Family Reunion by TS Eliot (Play): 131 pages (⭐⭐⭐⭐) - The Crucible by Arthur Miller: 149 pages (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, this one holds a special place for me) The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka: 70 pages (⭐⭐⭐, wasn't my taste but that purely boils down to preference; it's absolutely worth your read) - The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald: 148 pages (⭐⭐⭐1/2) - The Time Machine by HG Wells: 91 pages (⭐⭐⭐⭐, a high rating for someone who doesn't generally enjoy sci-fi) - Animal Farm by George Orwell: 120 pages (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, a favourite of mine) - The Pearl by John Steinbeck: 118 pages (⭐⭐⭐⭐, it might be 5 stars if I weren't comparing it to Steinbeck's other works)  🏷️ #classiclit #classicliterature #novellas #litfic #literaryfiction #mustread #mustreadbooks #shortreads #shortbooks #scifilit #scifibooks #kafka #franzkafka #siddharta #hermanhesse #orwell #georgeorwell #steinbeck #johnsteinbeck #gatsby #thegreatgatsby #fscottfitzgerald #fitzgerald #tseliot #thetimemachine #themetamorphosis #animalfarm #georgeorwell

George Orwell’s son, Richard Blair, has been presented with an Honorary Fellowship from University College London. It’s in recognition both of his efforts to promote academic study and public engagement with his father’s works and legacy and his support for the Orwell Archive, which has been at UCL since 1960. Richard insists his father would have wanted his papers in public ownership. He’s been active in managing and supporting the archive for many years and in 2018, it was granted UNESCO World Heritage status, making UCL the centre for Orwell scholars and work surrounding his legacy. Richard’s support for The Orwell Foundation is unstinting. He’s toured the country with us, in support of the Orwell Youth Prize (see pic), encouraging young writers to follow in his father’s footsteps. We are so grateful to him as patron of the Orwell Memorial Lecture and as founding sponsor of The Orwell Prize for Political Fiction. Richard was born in 1944 and was adopted soon after by Eric Blair – George Orwell’s real name – and Eileen O’Shaughnessy. When Eileen died tragically less than a year later, Orwell became a single parent, taking Richard to the Hebrides where he wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four. At the time of Orwell’s death in 1950, at University College Hospital, Richard was aged just five. He was raised by his aunt Avril, Orwell’s sister. Since 2008 Richard has dedicated his time and energy to supporting his father’s legacy. We’re delighted to share the official photos with you of this special day, including the first, in which he’s waving to his grandchildren in the audience and one pictured with his wife - Eleanor. Q ~ Why is A Plague of Our Own set in New Orleans? A ~ To juxtapose the apocalyptic setting. New Orleans is known for its thriving atmosphere, jazz music, and festivals like Mardi Gras. Q ~ What would have happened if Bush didn't murder Daniel? A ~ I believe he would reform humanity, becoming a sort of leader amongst those left in the cryo-chambers. Perhaps even started a family. Q ~ What inspired you to write A Plague of Our Own? A ~ With the current state of the world, I had been thinking more into how humanity would end, if it ever would. The reasons discussed by Daniel and Bush are ideas that could contribute to humanity's cessation. Second illustration of "Illuminati Collection" How has a seemingly straightforward image, an eye set within a triangle, become a lightning rod for conspiracy theorists? Conspiracy theories thrive on cryptic symbols and covert visual signs. Your Local Arena and Writing on the Wall present a film screening and panel talk: George Orwell (Part V). George Orwell said about his classic dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, ‘I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive.’ This event, produced in partnership between WoWFEST: FAHRENHEIT 2024 and Your Local Arena, asks: just how close are we to Orwell’s vision — or are we already there? In 1984, BBC’s Arena ran a series of programmes about the life of George Orwell. Part V begins with the tragic death of his wife Eileen in March 1945. Overcome with grief and despairing of the future, Orwell retreated to Jura, a remote Hebridean island. Here, crippled with tuberculosis and isolated from the world, Orwell wrote his last novel, Nineteen Eighty-four, a nightmare vision of a totalitarian future. Orwell explained that ‘The scene of the book is laid in Britain in order to emphasise that the English-speaking races are not innately better than anyone else and that totalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere.’ So, are we awake, resisting or sleepwalking into the darkness once again, as imagined by Orwell? Come and watch this classic film about one of the country’s finest writers and listen to a talk afterwards about how near we are to a nineteen eighty-four-type world. Speakers: Dolan Cummings, Director of the Manifesto Club; Director of English PEN Daniel Gorman; and freedom of speech expert Sara Whyatt. The event will also include a new poem inspired by the film by Francesca Beard. Video Odyssey, Toxteth TV Studios, 37-45 Windsor Street, Liverpool L8 1XE. 7pm Thursday 16 May. Tickets: £5 See link in the bio for more details about the film and panel guests. Francesca Beard is also hosting a workshop exploring the themes from 1984 on Friday 17 May, details also in the bio. @wow_fest @FrancescaBeard @dolancummings @sara_whyatt @LucyHannah19 @acegrams @BBCArchive #WOWFEST24 #YOURLOCALARENA #GeorgeOrwell #NINETEENEIGHTYFOUR #1984 #GEORGEORWELL #ORWELL #ACESUPPORTED #BBCARENAFILMARCHIVE #LIVERPOOL #WRITINGFESTIVAL #LITERATUREFESTIVAL

In the next five years, Blair would be posted to Mandalay, Moulmein, and Katha, reputed to be full of rebels, dacoits, whorehouses, and mosquitoes. Blair would eventually become George Orwell, the author of Burmese Days, Animal Farm, and 1984. Last year, a new novel based on his times in Burma came out. To review the book, Burma Sahib, today I turned to Orwellian biographies, delving into the exclusive European clubs scented with whiskey and perfumes, and the crowded colonial prisons tainted with blood and sweat. Since I have promised to deliver the article in two weeks, I must now sharpen my pen to do battle with blank sheets of paper (well, actually the blank Microsoft Word screen). Lo, I hear some drum beats and bugle calls from the past! #orwell #georgeorwell #burmesedays #colonialburma

The best 10-page essay that will improve your student's writing: Politics and the English Language. Clickable link in story: www.orwellfoundation.com "What is above all needed is to let the meaning choose the word, and not the other way about. In prose, the worst thing one can do with words is to surrender them ....   Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possible and get one's meaning as clear as one can through pictures or sensations. Afterwards one can choose−−not simply accept−−the phrases that will best cover the meaning, and then switch round and decide what impressions one's words are likely to make on another person. This last effort of the mind cuts out all stale or mixed images, all prefabricated phrases, needless repetitions, and humbug and vagueness generally.   But one can often be in doubt about the effect of a word or a phrase, and one needs rules that one can rely on when instinct fails. I think the following rules will cover most cases: (i) Never use a metaphor, simile or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print. (ii) Never use a long word where a short one will do.
(iii) If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
(iv) Never use the passive where you can use the active. (v) Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. (vi) Break any of these rules sooner than say anything barbarous." #orwell #writingtips #collegeadmissions #collegeessay #collegeadvice #london #teachersofinstagram

Spoiler Warning! If you haven’t read A Plague of Our Own, go read now before diving in: https://www.storytellr.co.uk/a-plague-of-our-own Deep Dive: A Plague of Our Own (Part One) You asked, we answered! Q ~ At the time of the story, are there any other humans alive on the surface besides Bush? A ~ Bush says that he hasn’t seen a soul in seven years… at least in terms of survivors from the surface. However, the world is a large place, and we humans are stubborn. Q ~ Do you think Bush regrets his decision to murder Daniel? A ~ Though I can’t say for sure, I believe that Bush’s worldview is unwavering due to his experiences with humanity, and the remnants that society left behind. I don’t believe he enjoyed it, nor do I think he necessarily regretted it. Q ~ What will happen to the others in cryo-status, mentioned by Daniel? A ~ For all we know, Daniel was not the first to emerge from the chambers, and may not be the last… perhaps Bush has spoken to others before, waiting for someone worthy to restart society. Perhaps he has already wrestled with the idea of ending humanity’s last hope of renewal, waiting for the will to pull the plug on mankind. #bookstagram #perezgaldos #maupassant #orwell #migueldelibes #josemariagironella

Rewriting the future! Join spoken word poet Francesca Beard for a workshop informed by George Orwell’s chilling dystopian world in the literary classic, 1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four). Francesca will perform her specially commissioned piece on the George Orwell (Part V) film at WoWFEST’s screening and panel talk on Thursday 16 May at Toxteth TV Studios, produced in partnership with Your Local Arena. (See link in the bio). This workshop is based on the book and film Nineteen Eighty-Four and the event discussion topic of dystopia, which implores us to consider: just how close are we to Orwell’s vision — or are we already there? Francesca will encourage you to use your creative powers to resist Big Brother. Resistance has many faces, and in times of creeping dystopia, creativity can be a firm stance against oppression. Join this workshop to learn how to connect through spoken word poetry and make a nonsense of doublespeak by playing with language and improvisational story-telling techniques. The workshop aims to include participants of diverse ability and experience. Francesca Beard is an internationally acclaimed spoken word artist who makes interactive and transformational work for live audiences. She has over twenty years’ experience facilitating projects with a wide range of diverse communities, for organisations such as Apples and Snakes, Arvon, All Change Arts, B3 Media, the BBC, The Barbican, The British Council and The Young Vic. She has been artist in residence at Banff, Canada and The Mixed Reality Lab, Nottingham University, to develop story-telling platforms for live and on-line audiences with B3 Media and Kings Cultural Institute. She comes from London, by way of Malaysia. See link in the bio to find out more about Francesca and this workshop. Venue: Toxteth Library, Windsor Street, Liverpool L8 1XF.
