This week’s “mystery plant” post featured the fruit capsules of Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboretum), a native understory tree found in upland forests primarily in the southeastern United States. Pale yellow, 5-parted fruit capsules develop on lingering flower stems on Sourwood trees in September. They dry and ripen to a silvery-gray and persist into the winter. Waxy, urn-shaped, white flowers appear on slender, drooping, 4- to 8-inch spikelets on Sourwood from June to July. The blooms have a slight fragrance and are very attractive to honey bees who make highly-prized sourwood honey from their nectar. Sourwood has drooping and swooping branches with elliptic, finely-toothed, glossy, dark green leaves with a sour (acidic) taste. The tree has consistently brilliant fall foliage, ranging in color from crimson to purplish-red, which persists until late autumn. Its twigs are also bright red. The fruit capsules contrast well with its red fall color and provide continuing ornamental interest after the leaves drop. Sourwood is a slow-growing, deciduous tree with a straight, slender trunk and narrow, oblong crown, usually growing 20 to 25 feet in cultivation. Its multi-season ornamental qualities make it a good specimen tree for lawns or woodland areas, but its sensitivity to pollution, soil compaction, and root disturbance discourage use in urban areas. Geografiskt kommer trädrosling från östra USA där den går under namnet Sourwood. Precis som släktnamnet Oxydendrum (= surträd) har det sin förklaring i att växtsaften är rejält sur. Bladen är ett effektivt laxeringsmedel. Veden har traditionellt använts för att göra skaft till pilbågspilar.Veckans växt finns i anslutning till Blomväxternas släktträd i södra delen av Botaniska trädgården. The glittering leaves of the Sourwood, wondrously fresh-looking and spirited, have completed their growth long before the flowers appear, yet so handsome are the great bouquets of bloom at the ends of the branches that they are not put out of countenance by the splendid foliage but, looking like hundreds of little lilies-of-the-valley, they sway and dance in the warm, friendly wind of late June and early July. In case you have not looked up and seen them, you may soon be made aware of them by the roar of the bees gone nectar-mad at their lips. . When autumn comes, the foliage turns a gorgeous scarlet or orange or crimson, doubly welcome because the Sourwood in general grows outside the range of the Sugar Maple and the Aspen, and takes their place in the South. Then, especially in the southern Appalachians where Sourwood grows 50 and 60 feet tall, is the season to set out afoot, or on horseback, or in your car, to buy Sourwood honey from your country neighbors. Some of them put out little signs along the roadside, but all you have to do is to watch for a row of "bee gums" not far from the farmer's house. For if the Southern farmer has hives at all, he has Sourwood honey for sale. Fortunately the blooming period of Sourwood is just after the fading of Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron whose honeys are poisonous. After a wonderful celebratory reopening of @armstrongkelleypark_trustees I made what I thought would be a quick visit to @heritagemuseums but quick it was not! I’d forgotten how extensive the gardens are - and they’ve expanded since my last visit. They are in the midst of the Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival and, though it is not a good year for Hydrangea macrophylla due to low temperatures this winter, the H. serrata and H. arborescens were looking extra lush. A quick downpour brought out the colors and made for lovely light throughout the gardens and I ran into old friends and made some new while I was there. Its leaves have a sour taste—hence the name. That is why the genus name comes from the Latin words “oxys,” meaning “acid” and “dendron,” meaning “tree.” The fragrance is not similar to Lily of the Valley, but it is no less beautiful, if not milder. This violently red tree is Oxydendrum arboreum or the Sorrel tree. Now is it’s moment of autumn glory. I’ve never come across it before; neither have I seen such enormous lichen as here on the trees at Inveraray.
Saw this a few weeks ago on the coast of Maine… #oxydendrumarboreum…would like to have seen it colored up. Great specimen, love the way it’s been pruned. And right down the street was a well executed heptacodium standard…generally, I like a more natural structure for this large shrub/small tree…a bit more rangy and layered. Very uncommon up here are Sourwood trees (Oxydendrum arboreum), this bright red one. The fall color this year is 💯💯💯 Slide one is my favorite! Sourwood is a slow growing tree that turns vibrant red in the fall, slide two is our native fall blooming witch hazel, Hamamelis virginiana, side three is another native just starting to turn, Fothergilla. Slide four is our native butterfly weed A. tuberosa setting seed and slide 5 is a good looking sugar maple I happened to notice while sitting at a red light. Slide six is one of my fall containers, leaning in with the white pumpkins and bright foliage of Heuchera. As my pal @tree_curator posted about yesterday- he was observing how some trees this year at the @arnold_arboretum were producing paler, washed out fall color- as if (as Michael suggested) their life blood was drained from them by a vampire. He would know, better than anyone so I rely on his expertise that indeed this is caused by invasive vampires. I’m noticing the same effect with my #oxydendrumarboreum . It typically has shockingly scarlet foliage (though much later around Nov. 1st. But this year it’s a weird pale washed-fleshy pink. #vampiretrees
A favorite Oliver specimen tree; the native Oxydendrum arboreum. Known as Sourwood tree- stories have it that early foragers would chew the leaves to relieve thirst. Also known as Sorrel Tree because of the sour taste caused by oxalic acid. Safe to taste, but not to consume a great deal. Also called Lily of the Valley Tree. The cream colored blooms appear along with the beautiful ox blood red fall leaves.
