๐ซ PORTLAND BILL ๐ซ You may or may not be aware, if youโre as sad as me watching Aurora charts all the time. That last Friday it hit a huge KP7, but on that same night the majority of the country was covered in cloud. Well it turned out Portland Bill was one of the only spots with clear sky, and by the time I made the 2 hour drive, all that was left was faint horizon colours, without any pillars or structure. But I enjoyed the time at Portland Bill regardless, and happy to have at least come away with something. When I set up the tent, I went for a walk. A special time in November. Special place. Special day. The village was originally called โVortโ, which meant โfenceโ. Day 318 to Day 324 of Walking the UK Coastline for @rnli (13th-19th April 2024) Our Days in Dorsetโฆ.! Our journey on the South West Coast Path resumed after 309 days of walking through the rest of England, Wales & Scotland. Previously we said goodbye to the SWCP on 23rd May 2023 as we arrived at Minehead. The departure point of the SWCP at Poole is such a different setting from that of Minehead, and we can see why the route is often written from Minehead to Poole, as it is a much nicer end point (Sorry Minehead!) There were so many highlights along the Dorset coast, most of which we have previously visited on numerous occasions, but it was great to do the whole stretch in just 7 days. The high point was probably walking through the Lulworth Ranges which is only possible to do on weekends, and something that we hadnโt done previously. Some of the climbs were insanely steep, and would be almost impossible in slippery conditions. Our low point was on Monday 15th April when we had to walk from West Lulworth past Durdle Door. The wind was at a steady 45 mph with gusts over 60 mph. We have never been so scared in 11 months of walking, at times almost impossible to stay on our feet, and in real danger of being blown off the cliff tops! Luckily we survived and finally made it to Devon for the next section of the SWCP. S A N D S O F S A C R I F I C E Signature Mission 2024 This May, myself and a small team will be embarking on a remembrance ride to acknowledge the bravery and stoicism of my grandfather and others during WWII. The ride will commence from Poole, and after a ferry crossing to Cherbourg, will broadly follow the coastline to the D-Day beaches, taking in over 100 memorials to pay our respects at, and visit other military points of interest. From there, weโll ride northeast, and after approximately 700km, arrive at Dunkirk to mark the 84th anniversary at the town where my grandfather was captured by Nazi forces. Joining us as our morale team leader is none other than the Dickin Medal recipient and the beast that is Kuno the Military dog @kuno_themwd Significant points to be visited: โข All five D-Day beaches โข Gravestone of Private Johns, youngest paratrooper to be killed (16) โข Movements of Easy Company aka Band of Brothers โข The British Normandy Memorial โข Pegasus Bridge โข Operation Biting - Combined Operations raid location, Bruneval โข Dunkirk beaches on the anniversary date of my grandfatherโs capture My grandfather was a volunteer with the 5th Glosters during WWII and at the time of his capture was part of the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.). Their job was to hold the line against advancing Germans whilst Operation Dynamo and the large-scale evacuation took place from the beaches. He was captured in a French orchard, just outside of Dunkirk on 28 May 1940, and spent nearly 5 years as an Allied Prisoner of War. In 1945, when the Russians were advancing, the Germans deserted their posts and so all the POWs, including my grandfather started their long walk back home. Despite his treatment and experiences, he never once complained of that time, and I hope I can highlight his bravery and that of others throughout the ride, whilst also raising some funds for some inspiring charities!
