Scilla Siberica - I made this one two years ago. Today I would do some things differently but I still like her. They are blooming in my garden right now. I planted so many of them. When I make a flower I kind of get obsessed and put as many of them in the ground as possible. Another little insight into my paper experiments. I admit it’s a bit crazy to get so lost in the details, but I can well imagine that these paper pollen would look great on lilies. What do you think? I had the idea of using Reseda luteola pigment, but I’ve already ground my own too finely... it’s no longer suitable for this purpose. I’ve been taking care of my mom with dementia for years, and as many of you know, it’s not an easy path. Through all of it, I’ve been devoted to trying to make my mom’s life the best I can, she deserves it. During this process, it’s changed my life drastically. I am my mom’s only person, and I take her life seriously. So when something grabs me personally, and I can take a break to see my daughters, grandchildren, be with friends, run to a quick art show, take time for a walk, show up for work, or the simplicity of making a yummy meal, I try to squeeze it in. And this is exactly what these little flowers represent, my time. Art projects are one of my favorite things to do, but they get the least of my attention, but the last two nights after working on my mom’s paperwork and move, I started cutting paper, it really is perfect therapy, thank goodness. @shanghai.1984 caught my eye, and I couldn’t resist trying to make her beautiful Japanese cherry blossoms. Getting back into things now, I ended up taking a week off post Maker’s Hand last weekend, but here’s a few highlights from the show!! 1: the cutest nasturtium imo, available online soon! 2: my setup at the market — turns out I love designing booths and all those years working retail somehow are paying off 8 years later 3: bonjour 👋🏻 4: another cute nasturtium, the variegated leaves!! 5: from a nice creekside morning walk with Egg (not pictured are the ducks we saw too 🥲) 6: I didn’t intend on making the Finicky Lawn Dads of PEC rethink their relationship with dandelions…but this paper plant sure did 7: the second-best butter tarts I’ve had in my entire dang life come from this adorable shack in Waupoos (first place goes to Edith Reid our neighbour across the street from us growing up) 8: Egg and her favourite blanket from our sweet Airbnb 🥲 What a nice time this was! I didn’t know what to expect as I’ve always thought markets weren’t really a possibility for me. But I’m so glad I took the chance and went for it. It was wild to see people seeing, I hope that these paper plants left a lasting impression and will shift how people look at real flowers next time. Also can’t wait to come back to PEC, it’s such a kind place and I really want to teach workshops there too! Nasturtium „Phoenix“ made from paper, paint and wire. I love nasturtiums. Their intense, bright color, their complex structure and their pungent taste. We had so many of them in the garden this year. It looked beautiful. Fluffy green red orange clouds. I love the name of this variety - or should I say "variant" for all the Loki fans out there🐊 - I think the name Phoenix is very appropriate for this flower. If you slide through, you can see how I applied the "eyelashes" and the real plant. This flower is full of details and I'm honestly a bit exhausted now. I actually planted it in my garden this year for Natural dyeing and actually I never liked Tagetes, but that has changed dramatically. What a great plant!And the smell is by far my favorite. The problem with my paper plants is that they completely fail on the smell. But i really like how these turned out. Let's see if I can find time to dye with my real Tagetes in the next few weeks too...I've been drying them. They contain an incredible load of pigment. And it's amazing how difficult it is to reproduce this intense orange on paper. Ah…on the second photo you can see my incredibly messy notes in my notebook. 🌱Some close ups of those mini prints (7cm squared) I make for fairs. 🌱It shows one of the ways I am mindful about my resources. I create them using off cuts of paper from my larger prints. 🌱I’ve made some tiny collagraph plates just to mix things up a bit- so will print them soon. 🌱The last fair I did, one lady said she was going to frame the tiny print in an oversized frame with a huge mount & I wish I’d seen the result, as I thought it would look really impactful. 🌱It’s so wonderful to think my pieces have resonated with someone, for whatever reason and they’re now being admired in new homes. 🌱I’m thinking of creating some gold ink on black paper too… what do you think?
