🤔 I can't remember the exact moment that the Grand Canyon entered my life - likely I was too young to actually record that memory. My father, being an avid ecologist, geologist, and general science teacher, felt that raising his kids with a deep love for being outdoors was essential to our wellbeing. 👟 My first overnight hike was to Horseshoe Mesa at age 8. Together, my father, brother, and I hiked all the named trails (over and over) and some exciting routes described to my dad by his friend, Harvey Butchart. I have no particular favorite moment in the Canyon because each experience has left me with the unique wonder encountered with every adventure. 👟 I do hold the memory of taking one route along the Bass Trail that required climbing. I was still quite young and didn't quite have the required leg-length for one of the down climbing maneuvers. My dad reached up to give me a hand under my foot. I dislodged a stone that hit his wrist and broke his watch. It was a pivotal experience. 👟 Even though he was in pain, he didn't retract his hand that held my foot and the weight of me securely. He was gentle and forgiving of the mess I'd made of his watch and we carried on down to Bass Beach. What I learned that day is that I could go anywhere in the canyon with people I trusted with my safety. 🎒 As I grew up I guided friends to places they'd might feel uncomfortable with and encouraged smart choices on hot days, and proper gear during winter hikes. To this day, I enjoy the group trips with fellow hikers as young as 2, first timers, and a solid group of avid canyon folks. 🎒 I love my solo days where it's just me and the quiet gratitude that solidifies my heart and mind. I remain in complete wonderment of every treasured moment. 🎒 Thousands of miles later, and 50+ years of navigating the canyons unparalleled wonders, I find myself humbled and grateful to a father who helped pave the way for an extraordinary life-long love for this place." - Diane 📝 We know you have your own #MyGrandCanyonStory to share! Longtime volunteer turned park ranger? What a dream! Meet James, and learn about his #ParkStory: "I’ve lived in Hot Springs my whole life, and the national park has been a big part of it. The water has always been an important part of my life like it is for so many others. I’ve been drinking this water since I was six years old, and I can’t drink anything else! After I graduated from National Park College in 2016, I became a volunteer for the NPS. Volunteering has always held a special place in my heart. Giving back to my community and helping visitors who come to the park is very rewarding. Swearing in Junior Rangers and seeing the look on their faces when they receive their badge is one of the best feelings ever. That one interaction you have with someone can make all the difference and change their lives. That’s why I love what I do. Over the years, being a Park Ranger has always been my dream, and this year, that dream became a reality! This season, I got to make great friends and give back to my community in so many ways. I’m proud that I work with so many awesome and dedicated people! Hot Springs National Park is the best national park in the world!" Graphic: NPS/T. It’s National College Colors Day! Today is a great day to pull out your college gear and wear your school colors with pride! Rangers here at Arches come from all backgrounds, some studied Geology, others explored International Studies, and some didn’t go to college at all! No matter what their path, each ranger here and across the park service has their own #ParkStory about their journey to become a ranger. Do you dream of working in your favorite National Park Service site? Keep an eye out for open positions at USAjobs.gov and check out NPS websites to explore other opportunities such as internships or other ways to get involved with the park service! #CollegeColorsDay #JoinNPS #CareersinNPS #BeaRanger #MyParkStory

Biscayne has some amazing Volunteers in Parks! We'd like to share the #parkstory of one of them with you today! Karen began volunteering at Biscayne in 2016. She, and her pup Spirit, have wintered with us every season since then in their RV. Her impact here is nothing short of remarkable. She is a steadfast presence at the front desk, ensuring that park visitors have the resources they need for a successful visit. She manages our Junior Ranger program when she is onsite and has been instrumental in our beach cleanup program. As a retired school teacher, Karen's heart lies with assisting the park's environmental education program. She ignites passion and curiosity in each of the students who visit the park. Being that she has volunteered with the park for so long, she plays a significant role in ensuring the continuity of operations within the education program. Karen is a United States Air Force veteran, and we are honored that she continues to serve by supporting us here at Biscayne National Park. #BiscayneNPS #volunteers #NPS

This August, the National Park Service highlights park stories and our connections to these beautiful and often difficult places. At San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, many families have shared their #ParkStory. In the We’re Still Here Exhibit, you can explore mission descendants’ stories about their connections to the sacred grounds of these missions. Throughout this month, we’ll highlight some of these stories. Check out the entire online exhibit on our website. Image: Mission Descendant Family's wedding portrait of their ancestors. Reflections on Bob and Carrie Uhl Camp Sisualik, Cape Krusenstern Bob and Carrie Uhl were the most down-to-earth people you would ever meet at Sisualik. They lived off the land all year. In the summer and at their winter camp Sisualik used to be the place where everyone went for summer right when school ended. We would cross rotten ice to get to camp on snogo with sled and stayed the whole summer till school started in August; sometimes, we even missed a few 4th of July’s. Carrie Uhl, Ahna Carrie everyone called her by that cause everyone knew her, had a broadcast greeting she did on the CB saying, “Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Night” on her airwaves, and people all around would participate in the greetings. Back then, the CB was the main communication between camps depending on how high your antenna was. I remember Bob always being busy at their camp with their dog Snoopy that had a grudge against me. Before I knocked on their tent door, Snoopy would growl, and I heard Ahna Carrie say, “Must be Johnson.” I can still hear her voice in my head saying, “0348 standing by or 0348 signing off”. They were one-of-a-kind people that will always have a special place in my heart. Growing up a camp was the best experience one could have, and I wouldn’t change that for all the gold in California. We miss you, Bob and Carrie Uhl- from your neighbors from Nuveraq to Sisualik, to Saluq and Sealing Point (which we all called Home for the summer). -Johnson Greene, former Resident of Sisualik and Saluq, Alaska #ParkStory #AlaskaParksAreDifferent Photos/AK Geo- Pictures of Bob Uhl and Carrie Uhl

Imagine floating down the Kobuk River and suddenly hearing drums and singing. This is exactly what happened to a group of researchers floating through Kobuk Valley National Park for two weeks in July. Towards the homestretch to Kiana, they floated up to the Kiana Elders Camp, where the kids had been practicing traditional dances and drumming all week. How exciting for both the tired research floaters and the kids who were eager to share their culture and meet their guests. What's your #ParkStory? If a trail could tell a #ParkStory… ...what would the Greenstone Ridge would say? “Come one, come all – my wide path is suitable for most to ascend Hike me for a day, or hike me for a week – I stretch from end to end. As you go, watch my forest change from deciduous to evergreen – By the end of your trip, I’ll make you a hiking machine!” If a trail could tell a #ParkStory… ...what would the Feldtmann Loop say? “Here I sit, waiting on the island’s west side My paths are narrow and covered in brush, I must confide But if you hike with me, I promise I won’t disappoint – After all, I’m the shortest “long” hike in this joint!” If a trail could tell a #ParkStory… ...what would the Minong Ridge say? “I know you’ve heard of me, with my wicked rocky slopes By the time you reach Little Todd, I hope I haven’t dashed your hopes. I can be a challenge, but my reward sure is great – Amazing views, beautiful bogs, and superb forest is what awaits.” 165 miles. Millions of footsteps. Countless stories. Happy #NationalTrailsDay to all who work, play, and begin their #ParkStory on one of Isle Royale’s many winding paths. Have you ever wondered how YOU can become a National Park Service Volunteers-In-Parks ? Here are a few #RangerTips for finding your next volunteer gig! 1. Check out volunteer.gov! It is THE place to find your next volunteer gig! From Camp Hosting to social media to cleanups to historical reenactments, there are countless opportunities across the country to fit your volunteering goals! 2. Try to make contact with the volunteer coordinator at your local park. Give a call, send an email, leave your resume. Sometimes, you'll get referred to volunteer.gov but sometimes there may be opportunities that have not been published just yet. Let them know your availability and skills because sometimes, you have the skills we never knew we needed! 3. Talk to the next #NPSVolunteer that you may see on your next visit. Ask them how they came to volunteer. Ask them for their #parkstory. Volunteers span all ages and all abilities and generally love talking to park visitors. #YourParkStory #NVW #Biscayne #BiscayneNationalPark NPS Graphic Image; Green, Blue, Yellow circular graphic with an arrowhead in the center and the words 'volunteer' surrounding it. . #nature #pavlovskiipark #park #parkstory #encounter #naturelover #fox #youngfox

Envy the tiger no more. The Nia top in olive stripe is here. 🐅 She’s cut by hand for perfect alignment and flattery. She’s made of Japanese cotton deadstock and has delicate shell buttons. She also looks adorable open, over a slip or camisole. ✂️ I’m obsessed with stripes. Did ya know that human skin is overlaid with Blaschko’s Lines, a pattern of stripes covering the body from head to toe? They wrap around the body’s curves in the most beautiful way. You just can’t see them. The lines of Blaschko are believed to represent the developmental growth pattern during epidermal cell migration (cellular relics of our development from a single cell to a fully formed human). Actual science is magical. Humans are amazing. Stripes are cool. 🦓 🐅 @guzellenton in my dining room, next to my grandfather’s painting, by @rabucur 🤍 🤍 🤍 #sustainablefashion #alwaysplaydressup #velvetdynasty #cottagecore #cottagecoreaesthetic #prairiecore #farmcore #farmcoreaesthetic #autumnstyle #folkcore #folkandstory #thatvelvetfeeling #asipofvintage #vintagegirl #poetryofsimplethings #romanticfashion #wearthisnext #whatiwore #whatimwearing #cottagecorefashion #vintagecore #parkstory #wolfandbadger #verishop #modatrova #ourcommonplace
