Meet Shardul Joshi, our newest addition as Junior Analyst - Ecology and #Biodiversity at @terracon_ecotech His top talent is bird identification. He prefers forests over mountains and beaches, and his favorite environmental documentary is Planet Earth 2. On his day off, he enjoys reading crime thrillers and listening to music. Shardul shares that he realized his passion for this field when his father, a keen naturalist, introduced him to the hashtag #naturalworld and encouraged him to participate in nature camps. His love for nature grew through these experiences, which ultimately led him to pursue a career in this field. Whenever he's in the field, Shardul looks forward to early mornings when the forest is awakened by the calls of birds, breaking the eerie silence of the night. Last week we reached a beautiful milestone in the story of “Anna Tova and the 200!” We have set up some alternative livelihoods for the Ildepen Women’s group that we helped form with Anna Tova and at a community meeting held at the Tree Nursery we sat down with the leaders and it’s most of its members to discuss coexistence between wildlife and people and development ideas the women have as well as economic empowerment. And behind the table was food for 135 women but our CEO @itspetermoll put it very clearly: “this food is not a donation, this food is a story of success of your work in this nursery, your leaders used some of the money made from the nursery to buy all you members food” This alone is the success of Anna Tovas story and we are so proud of her standing up many months ago and saying “we women are oppressed and we know we can do more! “I have been lucky to have worked in @forestryandlandscot’s Glenmore Forest for over 30 years and during this time the change in the forest has been remarkable. Glenmore was planted before and after the Second World War with at the time species that mad perfect sense in that they were fast growing non-native conifers such as Spruce and Larch. This all changed in 1990s with the realisation that we had an opportunity in Glenmore to try and create a native pine forest once again. Children of the Mother of Pearls (2009) In the northern region of Vietnam, Hạ Long Bay is famed for its calm emerald waters and evergreen limestone islands. It was also home to a number of floating villages, built by the fishing communities many generations ago. Therefore, it was rather common to see young children from these floating villages rowing large wooden boats around the bay looking (and sometimes chasing after!) cruise boats in order to sell the tourists nacre, popularly known as mother of pearls. The nacre is mostly cultivated from the Akoya pearl oyster (Pinctada fucata martensi), which is native to the shallow waters in the Indo-Pacific region. As for the children, I just found out that the government has moved the villagers from their floating homes to mainland, a project which started in 2012. So this scene above is something from the past that you won’t get to see anymore.
