We had so much fun with Florence this past weekend! Lots of river walks, snuggles, our first outings without her trainer, and meeting Buoy and some of his friends. Iris is determined to make Florence her best friend and she’s making good progress so far. It was a great opportunity for Jillian to build confidence handling a dog in public and learning how to communicate with Florence. Florence is great at her job and it felt like we were learning from her at times, we are so excited to learn and grow with her! She’s back with @theservicedogconnection to finish up her task training and to give us a little time to get moved and settled without having to worry about transitioning her into our lives during the move. For the first time ever, I donated blood ⛑️ My college hosted a Red Cross blood drive, and I signed up. I was unsure if I would be allowed to donate blood because I have medical issues and utilize a service dog. However, not only was I allowed to donate blood, but they had no issues with Kali being present or tasking during the blood donation. Although logically, I'm not surprised, I have a lot of medical trauma and have had more negative experiences with medical professionals than positive experiences. I was so nervous that they would have an issue with Kali being present, which would be a problem because I needed her present to be able to donate blood safely. Kali slept for the majority of the process, but toward the end, she alerted. I asked permission for her to join me on the stretcher so she could provide Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT), and once the permission was granted, Kali performed DPT until the procedure was over. My veins were not cooperating very nicely. The last time I got labs done, my good vein was blown, and the rest of my veins are very small and very stingy, so it took the nurses a little bit of trial and error to get my blood to cooperate, but I did it! Come spend a school day with us... 📚 📖 I haven't done one of these in a while, so bare with me. Kali has settled into this semesters routine a lot better than I have. She views class as the perfect nap time and sprawls herself out under my desk and conks out. She wakes up from her naps to alert or to glare at whoever dares to disturb her. Kali is obsessed with my English professor, but honestly, so am I. I really like all my classes this semester, but it is a much heavier workload than last semester. I'm drowning in all the school work, and my stress levels and seizures are leaving me in a vicious cycle of burnout. I've been reminded of the need to take breaks, so today, I painted my nails. I wasn't expecting returning to college to be so exhausting 🐩 I loved vacation, but im glad to be back into the routine of college. School is a lot, and it's exhausting. I have a hard time adjusting to schedule changes, and although I like my new classes and professors, I'm overwhelmed by all the new. My minky harness from the wonderful @ground_zero_gear has been a life saver. The soft minky is the perfect stim toy from when I'm overwhelmed and over stimulated, and it's quickly become my favorite piece of gear. This semester, there are a few other teams on campus, and I'm looking forward to meeting the other handlers and educating the staff and students on service dog laws together. It was nice being the only service dog on campus, but it was also nerve-wracking because we created the standard and expectation for service dogs going forward. So far this semester, my professors have been so kind and acomidating- going above and beyond what they are required to. This semesters classes are much harder than last semester, but they are also more engaging.
