If you have a little one that loves moving objects from place to place support their play and extend by providing vehicles, particularly ones with a space to carry animals, people or loose parts. If they love to move bigger things use a wheelbarrow, trolley or pram to transport objects to different rooms. The children returned from Spring Break to find new materials available in our space. They excitedly moved around the room, discovering caterpillars, tadpoles, ring boxes, face paint, and more. Coincidentally, on the same day our @insectlore caterpillars arrived, a child walked through the door with a tiny inchworm hitching a ride in her hair. We spent time watching it scrunch up its tiny body to move around before taking it back outside to live on a plant. During circle time, the children shared nature artifacts they brought back from their Spring Break adventures. Outside we began further exploration of the transformation play schema with the use of face paint. Children studied themselves in the mirror while carefully applying paint with a q-tip. It was so great to be back together again today.

•RUSSIAN DOLLS• Primrose was absolutely fascinated with my collection of Russian dolls when she was tiny (she still is) but now Lilac has taken a keen interest in them too! She’s displaying lots of her play through the enveloping schema at the moment and loves opening the dolls to look for the ‘baba’. Just like her big sister before her, she loves sweetly arranging them into a family group ‘mama, dada, baba.’ During some 1:1 time with Lilac, we lined the dolls up, counted them, went through their colours and then I went through our family using the dolls as props for; Mama, Dada, Primrose & Lilac and she repeated ‘mama, dada, Po, Lils’ 🥹😭😍 it was so heart meltingly cute! Yet not all children have a seamless access to diverse play schemas. Various factors, such as social, physical or mental health challenges, may hinder this access. That is why we carefully create as many opportunities as possible for our students to explore various play types. Recently, we introduced the “enclosing schema” within our Brick Club. Curious about the enclosing schema? It’s when children place toys inside boxes, dolls within dollhouses, or mix blocks in their buildings. This helps them understand boundaries, inside and outside, and boosts their creativity, problem-solving abilities, and many other important skills! This is exactly what we did in Brick Club when there was a delightful fusion of LEGO and various materials, with students creatively building objects into one another. Enclosure plays is one of my favorites… I love watching toddlers fill up buckets and baskets and containers with treasures… over and over again. I love a great container and you’ll find them all over our classroom in our atelier. Tonight, I added a few new containers to our light panel in the atelier. A basket for @magnatiles, a cup for acrylic rods, and two smaller compartments for balls or small loose parts. 🏴☠️ Pirate 🏴☠️ This play tray was a huge hit, and they played with their new pirate peg dolls for the first time. They love filling, pouring and scooping at the moment, and these painted popcorn kernels were a great new, smooth texture for them. They loved the colours (and I’m a little obsessed with them too!)
