Vertical Sinanoba Sinanoba is the neighbourhood I grew up in. It is located on the outskirts of the city, on a peninsula in the Büyükçekmece district. This district, originally named ''Batıköy'' was a project of Emlak Bankası(a government/public associated housing company) in early 1990s. Today we can still see the given significance to the planning and design of the neighbourhood. Even the details near the windows tell us how this project was designed with affection, and affection for human which is disregarded largely in contemporary projects of government-owned/ associated housing companies such as TOKİ. Morfa Stadium, Landore - opened on the 20th April 1989 by The Queen. I watched a programme earlier from 1996 & our post modern athletics stadium gleamed brightly under a Landore sky. I took these snaps from the telly screen. I spent a lot of my early teens running around this track as I was fast & ran for West Glam & Swansea Harriers. I loved going there. Miss it. Also would be rude to not mention the gig of all 90s welsh gigs Stereophonics Live at Morfa Stadium, summer 99. Boiling hot & a truly memorable occasion. Schools No: 53 Judge Business School / The University of Cambridge Location: Cambridge, UK Year: 1995 Architect: John Outram The University of Cambridge’s Judge Business School occupies the old Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Mostly designed by Matthew Digby Wyatt in the 1860s, the building fell vacant in 1984 and was subsequently listed. In 1990, John Outram won the commission to refurbish and extend it. Outram added three new structures behind the retained 1860s buildings (with a new cornice and portico). The Ark contains academics’ offices, while the Castle houses lecture theatres and plant. The Gallery, a 79-feet tall space defined by giant columns and criss-crossed by stair bridges, links everything together. Outram was critical of much recent university architecture, thinking that it hid the intellectual ambition of its users. His design is distinguished by a rich, allusive vocabulary which makes liberal references to architectural history and theory. Colour is a key feature, inspired by ancient Greek and Victorian precedent. This is Outram’s biggest work, and one of the best examples of postmodernism in Britain. Bruno Sacchi & Lorenzo Papi, Museo Marino Marini (1988) Chiesa di San Pancrazio, Firenze, Italy (Post 3: last post) As mentioned in yesterday’s post to get into the Rucellei Chapel you have to pass through the deconsecrated part of San Pancrazio which houses this rather amazing museum dedicated to the sculptures & paintings by Marini. Whilst much of the original Romanesque & Renaissance interiors are gone, the remnants that are left are given care, and the new structures thread & graft themselves into the space using a cohesive yet diverse vocabulary of parts that maintain the volume of the nave and providing a compression & staged release from the entry in along the space. There is an element of exploration as you follow the pathways up & down and around the space, given the visitor moments of joy at newly discovered vistas, & big expansive overviews from places not normally accessible in such an ancient building as this. This is a confident yet almost quiet architecture, that creates dozens of smaller spaces helping to curate the works of the great artist. Nice to see someone else taking cues from Scarpa’s museological designs without simply copying him, a thought placed in my mind by @shftoptplus from his post on the museum. Perhaps the only item that might be improved is the large window at the end of the nave, which is a bit too PoMo for my own taste. Throwback to my lens at 2022 and we are back in 1996. Why does these buildings relate to early new age hits of late 80's and early 90's? Ukrainian architecht Florian Yuriev, designer of the Flying Saucer at Kyiv, has great words(and works) about how image, music and colour relates. Also how architecture is like music. Maybe it is indeed like music. They are both designed at the end. Feels like these buildings have some specific notes that goes up to a point and then down. However these notes feel magical. Magical, pastel, a bit childish. Or no, not childish but feels like childhood. When you get bored all day on a summer holiday and you create games with the most random stuff. Or this is an ode to my childhood, which was surrounded by buildings like these: pastel and ideal. With some amount of hope and a good coat of sugar. This is good design. Designed with affection and designed reflecting its age but also somehow timeless. It is good at showing zeitgeist, good at exhibiting the ideals, goals and dreams of late 90's. Room 101: After yesterday’s howl of pain about the PO/BT Tower, today we’re looking at the City’s very own Komedy Kastle, Minster Court, the spikiest piece of PoMo in London. Designed by Gollins, Melvin and Ward Partnership (GMW), Minster Court is a festival of pink Brazilian marble, and has never been, shall we say, a great favourite among the purists. It is ridiculous, but it’s also unique, which is more than be said for most of what goes up in London these days. Its three linked buildings add a distracting frisson to the skyline, and it’s one of the few office blocks that the layman might recognise. I’m all in favour of it, in case you’re wondering, and I hope that it doesn’t succumb to the neutering process that has been applied by the recladders to many of our 1980s charmers. I guess it’s more post-Gothic than post-Modernist. In my 2,5 years in Berlin, I never went to this strange place but now had this chance and photographed the Socialist post-modernist Nikolaiviertel for the new Russian-language online-media @schon.berlin for a piece by architecture historian Anna @bronovitskaya; Nikolaiviertel is (or used to be) the historical core of Berlin that was almost completely destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in the late 1980s by East German architects who proposed 'refilling' the almost empty area with prefabricated concrete housing remotely reminding 'old' architecture instead of restoring old structures exactly; some houses and the church have been made looking 'old' though. “The Wall”, Nigel Coates, 1990. A bold Post-Modernist building from the “sparkling”days of NishiAzabu. In the architect’s intentions it was supposed to look like the remains of an “ancient wall”, as if it was built by Romans (in an unlikely presence in Tokyo) and then adapted and reused through the centuries of history. Who’s afraid of the big bad Wolfe? You can’t do a Docklands walk without bumping up against CZWG, and here we are facing Wolfe Crescent, squeezed on to a tight semi-circular plot, and notable for its five octagonal towers with their “copper” pepperpot roofs. I’ve looked on RightMove, and yes, it helps if residents don’t feel the need for right-angles in their lives. The crescent itself is an insufficently detailed redbrick arc with wavy-pastry detailing and a proliferation of garage doors, parked cars and bins galore. The towers are looking tired. Facing Wolfe across Albion Channel is Form Design Group’s Garter Way, built for social tenants rather than paying punters, and featuring three stark and pencil-pointy towers with an amorphous terrace behind. And this is where the Toytown Surreys stop. For some years after that late 80s heydays, development was negligible as the market absorbed what it had built. Then the Jubilee Line came along, and big clomping apartment blocks became the order of the day. The scheme with a wavy front is Toronto House by Lyndon Goode for Barratt. The other newer blocks are mostly dispiriting, and about to be massively overshadowed by the Canada Water Towers-Just-Like-The-Rest-Of-London Masterplan. Structures No: 62 Piazza d’Italia Location: New Orleans, LA Year: 1978 Architect: Charles Moore The Piazza d’Italia is a monument to the Italian-American community and it is one of the few icons of Postmodern architecture that isn’t a building. It was designed in 1978 by renowned architect Charles Moore. Moore’s design immediately attracted both fans and detractors, and many saw his architectural populism as pure kitsch. The piazza was conceived as an urban redevelopment project and a memorial to the city’s Italian citizens – past and present. Moore took a highly pictorial approach to designing his urban plaza. Colonnades, arches and a bell tower are arranged in a curving formation around a fountain.
