🛕 The ruins of the Great Ziggurat of Ur, taken in 2005 CE near Ali Air Base in Iraq. The ziggurat was built by the Sumerian King Ur-Nammu and his son Shulgi in approximately the 21st century BCE (short chronology) during the Third Dynasty of Ur. The massive step pyramid measured 210 feet (64m) in length, 150 feet (46m) in width and over 100 feet (30m) in height. The height is speculative, as only the foundations of the Sumerian ziggurat have survived. The ziggurat was a piece in a temple complex that served as an administrative center for the city, and which was a shrine of the moon god Nanna, the patron deity of Ur. The construction of the ziggurat was finished in the 21st century BCE by King Shulgi, who, in order to win the allegiance of cities, proclaimed himself a god. During his 48-year reign, the city of Ur grew to be the capital of a state controlling much of Mesopotamia. The next step in my plan to work through some of my backlog of terrain this year after completing the base Heart of Ghur set back in January is to complete this pair of Realmshaper Engines. One is a fully functional magical ziggurat, while the other one is a bit more dilapidated, though its bamboo platforms and more open top platform do increase its usefulness as a terrain piece in Warcry. The basic painting of these involved a brown undercoat that was then drybrushed with mixes of raw umber and buff Titanium craft paints. The glyph paints and vines were painted using Contrast paints and even then the vines too ages to paint, like painting trim on a pair of enormous miniatures! At least there wasn't too much rope holding the bamboo platforms together this time, as that is another massively fiddly task. “Etemenanki: The Tower of Babel” I have created a 3D representation of one of the Zigurats that has most influenced human culture, both in its original Mesopotamia, the cradle of humanity, and also in current culture for giving rise to the biblical story of “The Tower of Babel”. The ziggurat of the creation of heaven and earth; that was the name of the main ziggurat of the great city of Babylon in the 6th century BC, during the Chaldean dynasty. A ziggurat dedicated to the worship of the god “Marduk,” the patron god of Babylon, his temple called “Esagila” is located at the top of the ziggurat. According to the Babylonian creation poem “Enûma Elish,” this temple would be created immediately after the creation of the world. Today only the remains of this great construction remain, which at its peak had about seven stories in height, approximately 90 meters according to some historians. As I mentioned before, it was so large that many historians believe this ziggurat would give rise to the famous biblical tale of “The Tower of Babel.” The information read here was compiled from various sources such as National Geographic’s and accounts from the Greek historian Herodotus. I made my 3D representation based mainly on a sketch made by the Dutch historian Jona Lendering, as well as reading of several ancient documents where the building is mentioned. 🏛️✨ Une aventure inoubliable à Ur, en Irak ! Nous avons eu l’opportunité incroyable de visiter le majestueux ziggurat, imprégné d’histoire et de mystère. Ce monument millénaire, érigé par le roi Ur-Nammu vers 2100 av. J.-C., était un lieu de culte dédié au dieu lunaire Nanna. Accueillis chaleureusement par le propriétaire et les militaires qui veillent sur le site, nous avons passé deux nuits sous leur protection bienveillante. Une expérience unique où échanges et partages ont été au rendez-vous, notamment lors d’une partie de foot avec les forces spéciales irakiennes !
