Artist Spotlight: Wayne Hewell! A farmer and 5th generation potter in northeast Georgia, Wayne Hewell comes from a deeply-rooted family tradition. The red Georgia clay has been molded by Hewell hands since 1850, when Nathaniel Hewell started making pottery as a side-line to farming. Hewell’s Pottery is still the leading wholesale pottery in the US and it’s where Wayne honed his craft while working in the family business. Now focused solely on “turning & burning” on his own, Wayne uses wild local clay, traditional alkaline glazes, and fires in a wood-fired kiln. Furtive sideways glances, cigars smoked all the way down to the end, corn-cob stoppers from his own farm, and twisting, pointed ears are the defining characteristics of Wayne's work and lend a humor to his face jugs that is absolutely charming. He's also known for his swirlware - a process of combining two different clay bodies to achieve a mesmerizing swirling effect. Though it may look gracefully simple, it takes much technical knowledge to select clays disparate enough to highlight the swirling pattern and similar enough to still properly bind together. Artist Spotlight: Tim Whitten! Originally from Alabama, Tim’s introduction to folk art came when he moved to South Carolina in 2009. He became enamored with the pottery he would come across in the Carolinas and North Georgia, and, feeling the soulfulness of the pieces, Tim began collecting them. It just so happened that around this time, his neighbor was Marvin Bailey - a renowned face jug maker - who encouraged Tim to begin making pottery himself. He sat at a potter's wheel for the first time in 2010 and started creating functional wares., but soon shifted to face jugs, which continue to be the main focus of his work. A newcomer to our Annual Face Jug Show (this is Tim's 2nd year being among our offerings), his work has certainly made a splash among our collectors. Artist Spotlight: Stephen Harrison! Once the pottery bug bit Stephen Harrison, he was on a mission. He had a deep interest in the Catawba Valley pottery of North Carolina and sought out the master Burlon Craig to consult his wisdom. This legendary potter was a man who had kept one of the South’s richest pottery traditions alive. Stephen also developed friendships with Steve Abee, Charlie Lisk, and Kim Ellington, all while learning all he could about the folk traditions of North Carolina and the surrounding areas. He uses local stoneware clays, fires in a wood-fired groundhog kiln and uses homemade alkaline glazes. Stephen’s work is rooted in the deep folk traditions and focused on functional forms, such as pitchers and face jugs. Since moving to the Spartanburg area, he has also expanded his knowledge to include the pottery traditions of South Carolina and Georgia. Stephen's devils are a favorite of mine, because they feature irreverent inscriptions on the back that one can't help but find charming. The two devils included in our 12th Annual Face Jug Show bear the legends "The Devil's Alphabet Begins and Ends with COVET" and "Don't Let the Devil Sour Your Buttermilk". Stephen finds inspiration for these funky phrases in church signs, song lyrics, folk stories, and sermons. Absolutely obsessed with the latest @davidstea summer launch!! In honor of the collection release, I've spent the last two days revisiting all eight of the new teas. About four years ago, one of my favourite bands described their latest album as "drenched in nostalgia," and I think that phrase has been living rent-free in my head ever since. It also PERFECTLY describes these teas. They're all super refreshing and iceable with a strong late 90s and 2000s retro sort of vibe that takes me immediately back to some of my best memories of summer vacations growing up... 🌱🍵🚀 . These blends were such fun developments to work on, each with their own unique challenges. For months, I've been loving the nolstagic melted popsicle flavour of Rocket Pop, the refreshing & punchy slush-inspired taste of Cherry Limeade, and the rich and earthy flavour of Radical Root Beer - which makes the best tea pops or iced lattés that taste just like a root beer float! Honestly, it's tough to pick a favourite, though. I just love them all and have been dyinnngggg during the wait to be able to share this collection. Artist Spotlight: Ben J. North! Ben J. North has been working with clay since he was a child, and spent his formative years with many supportive art teachers and mentors who encouraged his interest in ceramics. As a teenager, Ben was invited to take pottery classes at the Rochester Folk Art Guild, where his life as a wheel potter was born. It was during this time that he first became aware of folk pottery traditions and began making face jugs. Ben then secured an apprenticeship with the late, great potter Felipe Ortega and spent that time being schooled in the legendary Apache micaceous pottery. Afterward, he was on the hunt for the right place to settle, a search which ended with the purchase of 15 acres of mountain paradise in North Carolina, where Ben built a studio & wood-fired kiln. Here, he also digs his clay, as seen in the accompanying photo. And seeing as how it's World Book Day, it seemed appropriate to include a photo of Ben's Elven King Ringelkrug, because it highlights both his love of The Lord of the Rings as well as his knowledge of historic pottery forms. The ringelkrug is meant to be shaken when empty, so the rings make plenty of noise and alert the powers that be that your cup needs refilling! The good news is, my second glaze pieces look like someone's second glaze pieces -- better than the first! But not really giftable yet, although my husband says he likes this one. I notice my cylinder form is much more solid and less malformed than last time, I love this handle, the weight is good and I think the make is improved. The glaze is where I'm struggling. The pumpkin is out of the kiln! A drizzled layer of Mayco Stroke and Coat Jack O Lantern orange under some Amaco Oatmeal with Iron Lustre and Seaweed on the stem. It was meant to be a splotchy orange under creamy white, and I think I achieved what I saw in my mind's eye. The texture of it is a delight.
