Bong Bong Train & Maosing Forest Trail last part The main Maosing Forest Trail is a really nice trail. There are maybe not that many impressive spots like in Jancing or the Chinese Hemlock trail, but the pathway was wider and the forest less dense, so it made the place open and relaxing. And as I said we were really alone, thus a nice peacefull moment. You will also see some old railways on the way. Because the path is more spacious, you really can see the Cypress trunks. And that’s the sad part of the Hiking. When you think about it, it’s almost like a cemetry. You see all the old trucks and there are HUGE ! So I cannot imagine how magical and even more spectacular the place must have been before the logging industry cut all those centuries old trees in the Taipingshan area ! You should see those trunks, they are giant, and imagining the initial trees is just unbeliavable. I wished they would have saved some of them instead of cutting ALL of them. It’s sad, they were very very old trees, very important for those forests and the ecological balance. To me they were the guardians of the mountains and seeing what’s left over was hard. We are proud to announce that a total of 1,190 hectares of rehabilitation area has been successfully handed over to the Directorate General of PDASRH (River Basin Management and Forest Rehabilitation). The breakdown is as follows: • 903 hectares in 2022 • 287 hectares in 2023 This accounts for 82% of the total area of 1,454 hectares. The remaining area is still undergoing the rehabilitation process. This event was also attended by the Director of KTA/Water and Land Conservation, the Head of Mahakam Berau Watershed Agency, and the Director of MEMI Operations. Did you happen to watch the newly released Indian web series called ‘Kaala Paani’ on Netflix?👀 A few days ago, on a whim, Shiva & I decided to watch this show. We had no idea that this unassuming series would take us back to the dense jungles of central India, and even more so, to the indigenous ‘Baiga’ tribe who call these forests their ‘home’. 🏝Although the web series is set in the distant islands of the Andamans, its underlying theme of the interconnection between the indigenous communities & our natural world evoked vivid memories - those of engaging with India’s primitive tribes, of understanding their communal ways of living, of admiring their artistry in crafting tribal jewellery, handicrafts & much more. ❄️In the winter of 2021, we were in Madhya Pradesh for my master's thesis research on the Baiga community. It took us a while to figure out the location of Baiga villages since they were concealed within the depths of the untamed forest, far from the reaches of city lights or paved roads. At first, the Baiga people regarded me with nervousness, thinking I was another government official arriving with eviction notices. But when they realised my intent, they welcomed me. 🏡The Baiga settlements were beautiful and also thoughtfully designed, with houses that had large verandahs where the diligent women of the tribe worked hard; some of them weaving plates from locally sourced leaves. Nearly everything they used came from forest resources. Their lives too, were intricately linked to the forests, inseparable from the wilderness.🌳 Yet, for the sake of tiger conservation, many Baiga communities had been forcibly uprooted from their ancestral lands & offered small compensation in exchange.🐯 This man-animal conflict has always left us both with intriguing questions on morality: Is it justifiable for a government to displace indigenous communities in pursuit of wildlife preservation, for well-off tourists who seek the thrill of a safari? Or is it better for these communities to be left undisturbed? Or can we imagine a tourism model that can respect, preserve and support both: The forest's wildlife & Its indigenous communities?🌱
