NEW POLLINATOR GARDEN IN NEWARK – The Native Bloom Initiative and NJIT's Honors College @adhc_njit_officialpage collaborated last weekend to create a pollinator garden at the historic Krueger-Scott Mansion on MLK Blvd. Student volunteers from the Albert Dorman Honors College got their hands dirty planting milkweed, purple coneflower, creeping phlox, clustered mountain mint, and other beneficial species. We also set up a bird bath for the urban bird species which live around these tall buildings. If all goes well, we expect to see a number of species harbored by this site. This was our first planting event in our effort to help pollinator insects and birds in Newark. We plan to have more planting going on in Newark in the future. Today was a truly unforgettable day at the book launch of Almitra Patel, Waste Warrior. A cherished family friend for decades, I recall childhood stay overs at her idyllic farm, where she introduced us to the beauty of nature and the magic of late-night frog concerts. For me as a kid, a visit to her farm felt like living a page out of an Enid Blyton book. Over the years, I've admired Almitra's pioneering work in environmentalism and urban waste management in India, as well as her silent acts of philanthropy of great magnitude, particularly towards education in government schools. Her Public Interest Litigation (PIL) succeeded in giving India a roadmap for garbage free cities. However, today brought a revelation: she was the first Indian woman to graduate with an engineering degree from MIT. Her humility and dedication are truly inspiring. Hats off to scientist (BARC) Padmashri Dr. Sharad Pandurang Kale for masterfully capturing Almitra's remarkable journey in this inspiring book, published by Granthali. On Saturday, we celebrated our Earth Day Service in Piedmont Park, where we thanked God for the beauty of Creation by bringing the joy of our Christian community out into the neighborhood. We were led in worship by the Rev. Dr. Andrew Barnett (pictured), who recounted an inspiring folktale encouraging us to pitch in locally in ways small and large to responsibly steward the natural environment in a sobering era of climate crisis. Parishioners supported the service by reading The Creation Story, singing along with the music to songs including “As I went down in the river to pray,” and welcoming passersby to join us in worship. Also, we were joined by some furry and feathered friends in the park—we even spotted some adorable baby ducks! We would love to get to know you! NEXT SATURDAY: the Riverdale Hub Gallery is excited to announce an exhibition showcasing the work of artist Julya Hajnoczky titled “Aurora Arborealis” on display from May 1st to June 1st at 1326 Gerrard St E, Toronto. Born in Calgary, Canada, Julya Hajnocky was raised by hippie parents surrounded by unruly houseplants, shelves of books, and an array of art materials, with an ambience of a radio playing constantly in the background. It’s no surprise that she found her calling as an artist, influenced by the wide mix of her surroundings. Running concurrently with this exhibition is The Prefix Prize, on display will be images created in Ontario at Point Pelee National Park, as well as images from Newfoundland made during Julya’s artist residency with Terra Nova National Park in August 2023. This exhibition explores questions around habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity, with direct references to Canadian landscapes and ecosystems. The images are elegiac, dark, and mournful, representing not contemporary specimens but rather recontextualized relics from a fragmented world. They float in the void, evoking a sense of future nostalgia. After many years following this icon's work it's a great pleasure to be exhibiting this piece by Alfie Rouy, emblematic of the newer direction his work is heading in: Peeking Through Paths of the Unknown Oil on Canvas 120 x 100cm 2024 Alfie Rouy explores ways of materialising the flow of versatile, fluid-like energies and frequencies that intertwine the mind with the Earth’s current phase of existence. Alongside a consistent narrative that pushes towards the evolution of Earth, the soul and the oneness of all. Rouy’s paintings are defined by confined yet free-flowing forms expressing elements of polarity and unity through figurative and abstruse imagery. Displays of distorted figures and aspects of reality are accompanied by a formulated array of embellished colour amongst complimentary textural marks. Each of Rouy’s paintings is charged with a sense of energy and is made with the intention of presenting our existence and experience in an elusive and contorted manner.
