Honored to be a part of the @saltwaterguidesassociation and to attend its Fisheries Science Symposium in Woods Hole. The ASGA has accomplished an astounding amount in the five years since it was founded, and is expanding to new species, new mediums and new issues to provide a voice to the recreational fishing community and push for abundant resources for us and future generations to enjoy. Some topics that were discussed today were the game changing potential that the @gotoneapp has in helping strengthen data collection to formulate stock assessments and management direction, the mind blowing feedback from the first two years of deploying acoustic tags in false albacore through the Albie Project, the ongoing battle for redfish in Louisiana and interesting insights into striped bass behavior. All-in-all, it was an educational and inspiring display of how the ASGA continues to battle for our resources. Start of the draw down 💦 💦 💦. Lot of people around here are quick to drain their farms off in the spring which leaves no habitat value for the ducks heading back north. This time of year even small farms hold a significant amount of ducks. We try and keep water on ours during the height of the spring migration. Our farm with the shallow water on it is a pit stop for thousands of ducks and geese before they head across the lake. Everyone wants to start getting ready to plant but delaying your water draw down is a way of giving back a little to the ducks. If you only take from a resource it will slowly diminish. I remember this day and fish like it was yesterday. @jakebergg @tbeckwith1 and I all slammed giants, and this fish was my first to break the 30" mark. An old scarred up hunchback deep water leviathan. A fish most likly older than I was at the time. Our 30" fish in green bay are almost all over 20 years old, with some touching 25 or 30. When people talk about the importance of CPR this fish instantly comes to mind. With the average angler getting better and better. The introduction of Live Imaging and the exposure on socials our fisheries are getting. Anglers are on the front line and responsible for taking care of the resources. Idaho never disappoints! Wild Cutthroat all day long including some rainbows, white fish and a few smaller bull trout. Those who say “ Cutties are stupid and will eat anything “ are wrong, at least that’s what we found in this watershed. Crazy times feeding sipping fish eating micro bugs. Tiny ( size 20 ) ants got the most eats as long as the drift was on point. Nymphing was solid along with some dry/dropper stuff. Weather was a mix of rain, clouds and a few blue bird days. Ran into a few bears on the road, lots of snakes and a couple Bald eagles. Everything was late this year with the wildlife thinking it was late summer. HOW IT WORKS - TEAM SCORING: For the team competition, anglers will measure the sum of the length of the two largest fish landed by any member of the team in each species category. If no teams land a fish from each category (blue, bass, hard tail), the team with the largest combined length for the two categories that were landed will be named champion. For team slam categories, if all four species are caught, the largest of each can be added to your total (striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, bonito and spanish mackerel). Please note that there are NOT separate fly and conventional categories for the team competition. HOW IT WORKS - INDIVIDUAL SCORING: Anglers will compete both individually and as a member of their team (boat). Each team can have up to four anglers (there is no requirement to fill all four spots), who must be declared prior to the start of the tournament. Prizes will be awarded to the top anglers in each individual species category, top three anglers in each slam categories (assuming more than one species is caught) as well as to the top team. For the individual striped bass and bluefish categories, anglers will combine the length of their two largest fish in each species. The individual hard tail category will be determined by the number of false albacore, bonito or spanish mackerel landed by each individual - the length of false albacore & bonito does count for slam categories, so measuring large ones is needed. For the slam category, anglers will measure the sum of the length of their single largest fish in each species category. For both the individual and team slam categories, if all four species are caught, the largest of each can be added to your total (striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, bonito and spanish mackerel). Fun times running the boat up from Norwalk to Lyme yesterday with @mfrasca7. Found some Spanish mackerel to start the day and ended it with hundreds of these brutes staging in shallow water. Played around sight fishing them on the long rods, including a few battles on the 6 weights, until we were ready to head in.
