TRAFFIC SAFETY - VISIBILITY: You may notice refreshed decals on our newest crash investigation trucks. Our fleet members were able to update the cruisers with a blend of cool and classic. The expansion of the reflective decals across each side of the cruiser increases #visibility when entering intersections, especially while working evening and nighttime hours. You will also see a rear flag containing stars and stripes on the lift gate with reflective writing decals. We trust as a motorist you’ll remember to use your headlights during times of reduced visibility and always stay alert. May is Military Appreciation Month. Today, we highlight #PWCPD First Sergeant (FSGT) Yost. Prior to his career with PWCPD, FSGT Yost was in the US Army for four years and was in seven countries. He served from 1987-1991 and started at Ft Campbell, KY with the 101st Airborne before going to Germany. He was stationed in Berlin, Germany for a year before the fall of The Berlin Wall. He felt that he had the opportunity to see the difference between a communist country and the Free World daily. He was also deployed to the Middle East for Desert Storm. FSGT Yost shared that after the events of 9/11, he wanted to serve his country again and missed the sense of camaraderie and purpose the military provided. However, had a wife and children and did not want to leave them so he joined Prince William County Police Department to serve his local community. We asked FSGT Yost to express what this month meant to him, and he stated the following: “Military Appreciation Month should not be just 30 days a year. The men and women who volunteer to put their personal lives on hold and fight for the freedoms so many people take for granted should never be forgotten. When you see someone passing by in uniform, take a second and thank them for their dedication and sacrifice. They have earned your respect.” Thank you for your dedication and sacrifice, FSGT Yost, as soldier and police officer. You have our respect and admiration. #MilitaryAppreciationMonth

National Police Week is May 12-18 The Board of County Supervisors today proclaimed May 12-18, 2024, as #NationalPoliceWeek and #NationalPeaceOfficersMemorialDay on May 15. National Peace Officers Memorial Day has deep significance for #PWCPD as it pays tribute to our fallen officers: Ashley M. Guindon, Chris Yung, Philip M. Pennington and Paul T. White, Jr. The Department observes National Police Week in two ways. All sworn staff will wear the black sash on our badges from 0000 hours on Sunday, May 12 until 2359 hours on Saturday, May 18. The Department will also observe one minute of radio silence at 0001 hours and at 1200 hours on May 15, and the names of Officers Guindon, Yung, Pennington and White will be read over the radio channels at those times. Emergency radio traffic will not be affected by the minute of silence. The Department also honors the lives and service of the 20 men and women who lived, or served, in Prince William County and died in the line of duty. **Thank you, Mike Beaty, for the photos of last night’s memorial and tribute service.

REMINDER: ‘Street Smart’ Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Campaign Runs Through May 19 #PWCPD invites residents to be #StreetSmart and aware of #pedestrian and #bicyclist safety. The “Street Smart” education and enforcement campaign, which runs through May 19, 2024, aims to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicycle crashes with motor vehicles. During the campaign, police officers will focus attention on vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle violations that contribute to these types of crashes: speeding, running red lights, running stop signs, and driving without headlights at night or at any time of reduced visibility. Conditions that may reduce visibility include rain, fog or any other situation where drivers cannot clearly see people or vehicles that are 500 feet away, or whenever windshield wipers are in use. Police will stop drivers who fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians. The “Street Smart” campaign addresses three main goals: To change motorist and pedestrian behavior, and reduce injuries and crashes, To increase awareness of the consequences of pedestrian and bicycle crashes, and To recommend actions to reduce risks, such as: using crosswalks, obeying traffic signals, looking left-right-left before turning or changing lanes, slowing down and stopping for pedestrians. By working together, we can help reduce traffic crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists, making our County a safer one. For more information, call the #Traffic Unit at (703) 792-7254.

Law Enforcement Imposter Scam: A scammer, posing as law enforcement, may contact you and request money in lieu of being arrested for missing a court date (jury duty, subpoena, etc.). CRIME PREVENTION TIPS: #VehicleTheft #Prevention / Keyless entry Cars with keyless entry unlock automatically when the key comes within a short distance of the car. This can be from inside a pocket or bag. If you must push a button on your car key to open your car, you don't have a keyless entry. Keyless car theft, relay theft or relay attach is when a device is used to trick the car into thinking the wireless remote is close by. This unlocks the car and starts the ignition. Thieves only need to be within a few feet of your car key to capture the signal, even if it’s inside your home. This means even if your car and home are secure, thieves can still unlock, start, and steal your car. How to protect your keyless entry car • When at home keep your car key (and the spare) well distanced from the car. • Put the keys in a screened or signal-blocking pouch. • Reprogram your keys if you buy a used car. • Turn off wireless signals on your fob when it's not being used. # metpoliceuk #CrimePreventionTips #PWCPD

Prescription Drug Take-Back Nets More Than 500 Pounds #PWCPD collected 511 pounds of unused and/or expired prescription drugs as well as e-cigarette and vaping devices as part of the #DEA's national Drug Take-Back event held on Saturday, April 27, 2024. The DEA joins federal, state, and local agencies twice a year to host prescription drug take-back collection sites in U.S. communities. This initiative offers individuals a safe and convenient method to remove opioids and other prescription medications from their homes, preventing them from being stolen or abused. According to the DEA, the national prescription drug take-back events address a crucial public safety and public health issue. The DEA notes that most abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends – often from the home medicine cabinet. These events provide an opportunity for County residents to help prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. The partner agencies involved wish to thank the public for their participation in continuing to keep our communities safe and healthy. By turning in these unwanted prescription #drugs – rather than throwing them away or flushing them down a sink or toilet – they are kept out of the landfill and our water supply. For more information, please call the #CrimePrevention Unit at (703) 792-7270.

‘Street Smart’ Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Campaign is April 21 – May 19 #PWCPD invites residents to be #StreetSmart and aware of pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The “Street Smart” education and enforcement campaign, which runs from April 21 to May 19, 2024, aims to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicycle crashes with motor vehicles. During the campaign, police officers will focus attention on vehicle, #pedestrian and #bicycle violations that contribute to these types of crashes: speeding, running red lights, running stop signs, and driving without headlights at night or at any time of reduced visibility. Conditions that may reduce visibility include rain, fog or any other situation where drivers cannot clearly see people or vehicles that are 500 feet away, or whenever windshield wipers are in use. Police will stop drivers who fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians. The “Street Smart” campaign addresses three main goals: To change motorist and pedestrian behavior, and reduce injuries and crashes, To increase awareness of the consequences of pedestrian and bicycle crashes, and To recommend actions to reduce risks, such as: using #crosswalks, obeying #traffic signals, looking left-right-left before turning or changing lanes, slowing down and stopping for pedestrians. By working together, we can help reduce traffic crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists, making our County a safer one. For more information, call the Traffic Unit at (703) 792-7254, or visit the Police Department’s Pedestrian Safety web page: www.pwcva.gov/trafficsafety #pedestrian-safety.

#Opioid Use and Dependence In addition to other side effects, #opioids can cause dependence, meaning the body gets used to the drug and slows its own production of endorphins — hormones produced by the body that provide a sense of well-being. The body starts to need the #drug. Read more: https://curbthecrisis.com/what-is-the-opioid-crisis/opioid-101/ #OperationFreeVirginia #PWCPD

THINK BEFORE YOU POST • Don’t ever post or send any #hoax threats online…period. • If you are a target of an online threat, alert us immediately. • If you see a threat of violence posted on social media, immediately contact PWCPD or your local police or FBI office. • Notify authorities but don’t share or forward the threat until law enforcement has had a chance to investigate—this can spread misinformation and cause panic. • If you are a parent or family member, know that some young people post these threats online as a cry for attention or as a way to get revenge or exert control. Talk to your child about the proper outlet for their stress or other emotions and explain the importance of responsible social media use and the consequences of posting hoax threats.
