“Casablanca” is a song I wrote with legendary British psychedelic hero Peter Daltrey and it’s on our current album “Running Through Chelsea.” The record is a heady psychedelic brew of sonic medicine distilled from a fragrant collection of ingredients. And “Casablanca” offers a hint of the panoramic spectrum of sound we pieced together. This swooping track weaves sweet harmonies from the two-girl vocal attack of DC Fontana’s Karla Milton and The Wyld Olde Souls’ Ivy Vale together with Peter’s, err, “Kaleidoscopic” lead voice while two drummers lay down a jazzier rhythmic pulse infused with North African qraqebs and darbuka. A distorted Finnish kantele played by Circulus’ Michael Tyack intersperses the Saharan influenced tapestry of sound that also features double-reed mizmārs, rabab, lotar and saz while my own bass and Steve Linforth’s cool guitars anchor it to a bedrock and roll. Someone amusingly told me this song reminds them more of the brilliant American late 60s band Kaleidoscope rather than Peter’s swinging London outfit of the same name, but that’s cool. I grew up loving both Kaleidoscopes! “Chelsea” is available on Think Like A Key as a CD, boutique limited edition vinyl LP or as an expanded digital collection as downloads/streaming. I visited the #gnaouafestival in #essouira , an event celebrating a traditional music form in Morocco. These two musicians were happy to pose for a photo! Gnaoua, also known as #gnawa , has an interesting history branching from many different roots and with many influences. The music is defined by three instruments, the Gimbri, a three stringed lute, qraqebs (which can be seen in this image), a type of castinet and tbel's, which are two headed drums. Gnaoua is most famous for its association with Djinns (maybe known to you as Genies), spirits and ghosts from folklore. The music is supposed to allow for communication with such entities, and to free those possessed by them (even if just for a short while). The music has its roots in slavery, from traditions brought up from West African countries and the Sahel by those captured in the Barbary slave trade. The musicians playing are often the descendants of these people. He was one of the first to merge traditional Moroccan motifs with modern sounds emanating from his Farfisa. What results, after the addition of effects from the organ, is a psych-over-qraqeb jewel that's quite a trip and unlike much out there. 《Gongué de Maracatú y Qraqeb para @carlo.seminara》 ▪︎El Gongué es un instrumento de percusión brasileño, muy usado en la música del noroeste de este país. Es un tipo de cencerro que consta de una gran campana de hierro cuya longitud varía entre los 20 y los 30 cm. Unida a una varilla que sirve de soporte, los ejecutantes de este instrumento lo apoyan contra el cuerpo (a causa de su peso) para evitar la fatiga. El largo total es de aproximadamente 80cm. ▪︎El Maracatú es un ritmo, danza y ritual religioso afrobrasileño. Un conjunto musical de percusión que acompaña una procesión Real. Presentan un espectáculo lleno de simbologías, marcado por la riqueza estética y la musicalidad. ▪︎Con respecto a las Qraqeb's, se utilizan en la música gnawa de Marruecos y el norte de África.
