Happy #washroomwednesday ! Is that a thing? Also, is “washroom” a regional phrase? Or maybe it’s just an outdated one. I swear I’d hear it all the time like two decades ago, but now it seems like “bathroom” has really overtaken the conversation. Anyway… today I wanted to highlight the way in which Disney Imagineers are able to make one thing look like an entirely different thing. Take these lanterns that adorn the space outside of the Rapunzel bathrooms. At night they “gleam and glow” as dazzling lanterns, seemingly floating aloft in the sky. But it took a zoomed in image and perfectly clear day for me to realize: those are plastic, ya’ll. Do you see how the paint has even worn off a bit in some areas? And of course it makes sense that these lanterns, which adorn an outdoor space in Florida must be made of something more durable than paper. Disney World is, after all, built to withstand hurricane force winds and torrential downpours on the daily. But step back and look up, and we see nothing but the village (town?) of Corona celebrating the birthday of a lost princess. Call it Pixie Dust, or Disney Magic, or extraordinary workmanship of the creative and set teams of Disney Imagineering. I hesitate to open a can of worms on the topic of value of admission, but *this* is part of what we pay for. Yes, there are the attractions and fireworks. But then there are the bathrooms that are so doggone beautiful that people put on their must visit list. It’s the gale force wind proof plastic that sure looks exactly like paper painted with paint made of crushed up natural pigment mixed with water. There is value in the details because those are what make the experience go from mere ordinary to extraordinary. There are some photo ops that are only available at certain times and this Rapunzel themed one is one of them.
