Let’s talk about the pressure to ‘move on’ after loss. The idea that grief has a clear timeline is rooted in capitalist ideals. Western, capitalist, colonized societies are pain-avoidant, because feeling pain means slowing down and attuning to our body and spirit. If we’re spending time crying, remembering, celebrating… that’s less time we’re spending working and producing. Because of this grief is seen as a disruption to productivity, and is therefore pathologized. We must challenge this narrative! The truth is, grief is an honorable and necessary part of humanness. It is evidence of our love, and it allows us to connect more deeply with our communities, our spirituality, and our ancestors. Depathologizing grief means embracing its complexities, acknowledging that healing isn’t linear or “fixed”. It’s not something to “move on” from. Grieving is saying ‘hello again’ to the people and places we’ve lost. It is a journey of continuing to nourish our relationship with the loved ones we’ve lost. The 1st photo are the valentines my parents made for me in 1974. The 2nd/3rd is the one I made for my grandma the same year. I was fortunate to be raised in a family that loved telling people we loved them & that was scrappy & resourceful, using what we had rather than buying supplies (check out the 50 year old cellophane tape). In the intervening years I’ve raised kids who learned to use what they had to make them. I especially love the year that one made me a “love spider” with construction paper, tape, & pipe cleaners & the other recycled a dead battery for my valentine (Photo 4). Then there was the paint chip year (Photo 6) & the match is year. A few important people have sent me incredibly stunning ones over the yrs (Photos 8 & 9) I’ve continued to work hard to use what’s around. I hope that this can serve as inspiration to start gathering printer paper, tape, & a few markers & make love notes to your self or someone else. My first act of resistance will be to cease all forms of productivity. Starting with the most efficient ones. No more hustle or rush of any kind. From now on, I am only doing things because they make me feel good and serve Life (in a Tantric sense, not a Christian one). As we near the end of the year all the “Top 10” and “The Year’s Best” lists and the celebration of “accomplishments” can make us feel as though we’re not measuring up to expectations. But whose expectations? Living in a hyper-capitalist, neoliberal society can mean that we unconsciously adopt those ethos that leave us feel “not enough.” Let’s resist the capitalist gaze that reduces humans to only material productions. What if we celebrated our accomplishments in humanity? Have you cared for someone? Have you helped someone get through a difficult time? Have you held a conversation with someone even when it was hard? Have you spoken up for a vulnerable or marginalized group? Have you shown kindness and compassion? Have you persisted and survived a hard year? Have you stopped and rested? And let’s resist the capitalist lie of a zero-sum game. We do not need to compare ourselves to others. We can celebrate other people’s “wins” wholeheartedly without feeling bad about ourselves. There are enough wins to go around. And while at it, let’s expand the definition of being loved. Indigenous Women Land Defence Convergence 2023! This gathering brought together Indigenous women from all around the globe to speak on extractivism & gender based violence, as we grounded ourselves through the power of matriarchal lineage. I had the honour of being called forward to represent the youth position while in protocol and the ceremonial practice of gifting. ( Initially I had thought I was showing up to volunteer but creator had other plans.) My heart is filled with so much love as each women/femme gifted me a piece of their culture or shared a sacred dance/song. I keep telling myself I travelled the world in three days. ♥️ The speakers and workshops were empowering as we shared our stories and gathered wisdom to fill our baskets. The space created together was overflowing with ancient memory of our ancestors along with laughter, love, & joy. I witnessed the strength yet gentleness we hold not only for our families & communities but the lands that birthed us first. I met new sisters and built relationships that truly uplifted my responsibilities moving forward. I remember driving home last week as my eyes filled with tears leaving my family in Secwepemc’ulecw . I almost wanted to turn my car around and go back to the Mountains. But my welcome back to WSANEC has shown me otherwise. I am on the path creator has woven for me. My spirit is home from the rivers of Secwepemc’ulecw to the oceans of WSANEC-I am the salmon. Our relatives were from Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Panama, Chile, Colombia, Amazon, Argentina, Papua, Russia, Philippines, Hawaii across turtle island. Recently, I've been grappling with a lot of emotions about my life and this business and where it's headed. It wasn't until I was discussing these feelings with my family over the weekend that I realized that 7 years ago, when I first came up with the idea for centering pendants, I felt the same way. As I reflected on this more, I felt at peace with the uncertainty. At 42, I'm currently in the crown of my brow chakra, where my life's plan and vision are divinely guided. I can trust that my life's plan will unfold as it should. As I move into the root of my crown next year, I anticipate a seven-year journey of deeper awakening to the universe that will start with the manifestation of something great again. It's like I'm on the cusp of birthing a new creative project. I wonder if my cousin knows how meaningful it was to hear her say “you are the most powerful manifestor I know.” It gives me strength, hope, and confidence that whatever it is that's brewing inside me will come out perfectly. . However, I've also been struggling with my lack of motivation to work and my desire to just hike and explore. I've finally come to terms with the fact that my intuition is telling me to follow that urge and let go of my worries about productivity. Hiking has become a form of church for me, where I can journal, sketch, and let my mind wander. I'm in awe when I'm surrounded by nature, and awe is like the divine light, gestating my creative project with me. . This self-portrait perfectly captures how I'm feeling. Instead of forcing myself to sit at my workbench, I'm learning to listen to the pull and trust that it knows where I'm meant to be and what I'm meant to be doing. I'm choosing to ignore that capitalist narrative and prioritize my own well-being instead. Letting go and trusting in a higher power, is an act of self-care and resistance against a system that values productivity over all else. I’m grateful for my privilege to do just that (and don’t worry, I am working on your custom orders). 🙏👌❤️ . What about you? Behind the struggle of every displaced community, farmer’s stolen land, brutally deforested areas, toxic waterbodies, and much more. While the people of these areas, who’re most affected by it, spend the rest of their lives to fight and resist, we sit in our homes chanting about GDP and the need for development. Our idea of “better India” becomes their waking nightmare. Is this the development we want? Is this how India will progress? Why are we following the paths of the countries that have historically polluted our countries to keep theirs clean. Now, when they’re landing in all kinds of trouble, does it make any sense to follow their exploitative model? We will become them in a few years. What then? Why are we ignoring our beautiful diversity in people, culture, land, and ecosystem? Their models won’t work for us. They are not made for us. We can’t think of short-term solutions to fix our economy. We have to conserve our natural resources. Not exploit them for short-term economic boosts that serve the richest. Why are we supporting the people with power who are doing all of this? The government, the billionaires, the industrialists? It is time to question our belief system. Question what we’re being told. Question the development forced upon us. Question the people in power. The land has hosted a diverse variety of seed, including the sacred three sister crops of corn, beans, and squash. It provides a home for wildlife, and has remained an integral part of Sauvie Island’s working land and community.
