Raven (corvus corax) Boreal Fauna Series, Signs of Life Collection. Within Anishanaabe culture, Raven is a symbol of creation, transformation, knowledge, prestige as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth. Raven is much larger than his crow cousin ( and in flight, crow has a fan-tail and Raven has a wedge shaped tail with longest feathers in the middle). Raven has the largest brain per body weight of any songbird. He can problem-solve, create tools, mimic sounds of his environment and has a complex language system. While he might be trickster in some cultures, his creativity and ability to fly high into the heavens make him an apt messenger in the realm of spirit. Raven is the most recent addition to this series for me and came about as a result of a visit to one of the beaches on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It was a particularly dull blustery day so the beach was all but deserted but in the distance I saw a tall black figure just standing still and looking out to sea. As I got closer, I realized it was a huge ( 3 feet ) Raven. He was not moved by my presence so we both just stood there for over a minute! That being had such an immense energy that in the end, I bowed to him and continued on my walk. I did not look back. Muskrat (ondatra zibethicus) Boreal Fauna Series, Signs of Life Collection In the beginning there was a giant world of water and the muskrat dove down to the bottom. Although many animals tried valiantly to help, it was humble, perseverant muskrat who brought up mud that was smeared on the back of a turtle and that became the earth. So they have a very special place in indigenous stories and culture. Very social by nature, muskrat prefers to live in community along river banks and waterways in the boreal forest and derives her name from the musk she secretes to mark the colony’s territory. She is considered to be the true mother of the earth and she embodies determination,perseverance and selflessness. Chipmunk (sciuridae tamias) Boreal Fauna Series: Signs of Life Collection This tiny but mighty forest denizen is an integral part of the ecosystem. They have been known to gather over 150 acorns in a day and spread seeds of all types and important mycorrhizal fungi around tree roots. Chipmunk is a consummate ‘engineer’ often burrowing over 20 feet with multiple exits so apparently always has a ‘plan B’. In an urban environment, they have many predators but none more lethal than outdoor cats. I have observed this most recently as for years we had cavorting chipmunks in the garden.. until the cat next door stopped being an indoor pet about 2 years ago! Raccoon ( procyon lotor) Boreal Fauna Series, Signs of Life Collection. Many First Nations (and Native American) children’s stories and creation stories feature the raccoon, whose wily Trickster ways enact teachings about respect, cooperation, honesty, hard work, and humans and animals as relations, as well as many other lessons about living well together with others. The origin word lotor means washer and harkens from the nature of raccoon’s fastidious ritual of washing his food before eating it whenever possible. Climate change, urban encroachment and habitat loss have driven this nocturnal omnivore from the quiet of the forest to scrounge largely where humans seek to dwell. I must say that at this point, I have had many more encounters with raccoons in my back yard than at my cabina up north. It is difficult not to be charmed by this agile character so I made an executive decision to include him in this series. Great Blue Heron (ardea herodias), Boreal Fauna Series, Signs of Life collection. I have often seen this patient fisherman on Commanda Lake down the road.. basking in the reeds.. still as a statue on one leg… awaiting the perfect moment until his dinner comes to him! Independence, self reliance and self-determination are the attributes of heron clan and while they always nest in community, they are solo hunters. As a yogi, I am always struck by heron’s ability to balance for immense amounts of time on one leg! Visually, they are graceful fliers but are just a bit prehistoric to my eye. We always associate them with grace but they are also harbingers of the future in indigenous cultures… they invoke the seer and the intuitive in us all. The wetlands in which I first encountered them has shrunk considerably over the past decade in particular and I have not seen swans there for years… a future I was not awake enough to foresee at the time! We had driven up for five hours, unloaded the groceries from the car top carrier into a large metal box and had settled in for the night. Somewhere around 2 am we were awakened by loud banging and a large head at the window beside the cabin bed! Our first encounter with ‘no nose’ ( we’d neglected to cache a loaf of bread that had slipped to a dark corner of the car-top carrier)….
