Angie Lewin - Fern Cup I collect ceramics of all types as they are the perfect starting point for my prints and paintings. The rusty venetian red of the leaf decoration on this faceted cup inspired me to pick fronds of copper shield fern, Dryopteris erythrosora, and fiery scarlet rosehips from the garden. The chalky pale green of lichen, gathered from nearby trees, provides a complement to these reds. A clear, cold, starry night in Northern Scotland provides the background to this autumnal wood engraving. From the 86th SWE Annual Exhibition which travels to Banchory in May. As I’ve already done a couple of sea turtle prints I wasn’t planning on doing another one for this week’s @drawingskool homework assignment “SEA TURTLE,” and I wasn’t really planning on doing one for this week’s @funfridayartclub prompt “TERRY PRATCHETT,” as I’ve never read his books (apparently today is Terry Pratchett Day). I did have a copy of Guards, Guards when I was a kid but I just couldn’t get into it. However before I completely wrote-off the idea I did a bit of googling to discover that Pratchett’s “Discworld” is suspended on the back of four elephants standing on top of a sea turtle… and the thought of a prompt double whammy got me interested and I thought that was a fun challenge. The first print is on heavy rag paper followed by Lokta paper, antiqued rag paper and cartridge paper. Here's another linocut I'm working on. I had the fun idea of a pigeon having a cuppa so decided to attempt to make it haha. But I think I should have put a bit more thought into the design because aspects remain unclear. Marmoleum (wood) linocut are super difficult because it just requires so much more effort to carve. I'm still unsure what designs would work well with the wood. I think I should try and do some simpler designs if I continue with it or do a series of smaller designs like I did with lino. In other news, last night I watched Princess Mononoke. One of, if not my number 1, favourite movies and it just made me reflect on why I do art or what I'd like to create. I love the storytelling side of art and illustration. Especially relating to folklore and trees and the forest. I think I need to dedicate more time to doing illustrations that express that. But yeah I'm still doing finishing my course so I am actually getting my focused cap on and doing the work. The works have been very well received alongside works by co - exhibitor @jbyjuanita. Medusa is the mythical figure represented by a writhing head of snakes whose gaze turned a mortal into stone. Perseus was the hero who slayed her using cunning to overcome his adversary. His shield reflected her image and using this as a guide, he cut off her head and used it as a weapon in later conflicts. Happy Friday, it feels like it’s been a long time coming 😅. I’ve been trying to finish this print all week but I’ve barely had any time for art. It’s based on a doodle I did a few weeks ago of my little octopus pal Octopuski and was inspired by all the violin practice that’s been going on in my house recently. My wife plays violin and my daughter has been learning at school but has now started working towards her Grade 1. I’ve been having a go too and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ll stick with guitar 😂. I’ve also recently started watching a documentary about octopuses. They’re fascinating, intelligent creatures, though I’m not sure any of them have learnt the violin yet. 🐙 🎻 I still can’t decide whether I’m calling the crab Fishstock or Soupstock but he’s turning out to be quite fun to include in these Octopuski pictures. "Lockdown birthday" linocut and engraving. The first lockdown happened on my birthday, the 23rd of March. Because I was classed as vulnerable, I had to separate from the family, have my meals in the kitchen and so on. The weekend before I was booked for a meal at the High Pavement but had to cancel of course. The chef at the High Pavement, Stuart Bastiman brought round an entire meal for me. It restored my faith in the human race, so thanks to Aimee and Stuart! This piece is unique, for technical reasons it never got editioned. Amanda Taylor - Lookout As a subject for this engraving I was inspired by the textures I could create, from the twisted rope, to the grain in the wooden post and the play of a shadow next to it to provide some contrast. I was brought up by the sea and have always loved birds and animal life, and I captured this pied wagtail just as he landed on the post. Continuing my journey through some of my “back catalogue,” this one was inspired by the cover of the first Foo Fighters album. I was looking for a follow up to my tentacle holding a microphone and “This is a Call” came on the radio. It made me think about that album cover and I thought a ray gun would look cool held by a tentacle. In my “research” prior to making this print I discovered that this particular type of ray gun is actually from Buck Rogers. The first print is on heavy rag paper, followed by antiqued rag paper, Lokta paper and Lino shot. At the time a few friends were making art into stickers and I thought I’d see how this one looked as a sticker, swipe to the end to see. As I was digging out the block for the mermaid print I posted yesterday I unearthed another old block I really fancied reprinting. I originally made this for a “LISTENING TO MUSIC” prompt and at the time really wanted to make a skull print, hence the skull wearing headphones 💀 🎧 🤷🏼♂️ I’m enjoying seeing how some old blocks that I’d originally printed on cartridge paper look on some of the other papers. I particularly like how this one looks on the antiqued ray paper (first print).
